A PRAYER FOR THOSE AFFECTED BY THE HURRICANE KATRINA

Loving God, we ask you in this time of great fear and sorrow to be with all who suffer and experience pain, loss and death through the tragedy of the hurricane in New Orleans. Through the inspiration of your Son Jesus, the Prince of Peace, lead us in ways that can assist those affected by this tragedy. May we join our efforts with all people of good will to bring your healing to those who are in need. Strengthen and comfort all who grieve the loss of friends and relatives. Strengthen and guide those who are working in relief efforts – providing comfort, food, shelter and whatever is needed to bring healing to people’s lives. Help them bring your peace and your justice to this troubled area. Mary, consoler of the grieving pray for us Jesus, healer of those in need graciously hear us. God of Peace and justice, guide our efforts.

ShareLife To Channel Aid For Victims of Hurricane Katrina ShareLife, the charitable fundraising arm of the Archdiocese of Toronto, announced that it will channel funds to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina. Hundreds of thousands of families are homeless in the wake of the violent hurricane that struck the Gulf Coast last week. Funds collected will be sent to Catholic Charities USA, the organization commissioned by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops to represent the Catholic community in times of domestic disaster. They will be offering both short and long-term relief to the affected regions. Schools may wish to be involved in fundraising efforts for this cause. We ask that schools gather funds raised and send one large cheque to ShareLife marked – “ShareLife Hurricane Katrina Relief”. Some schools may wish to channel funds through their local parish. If this is the case, we invite you to let us know of your efforts so that we may recognize your school accordingly. Should you have additional questions, do not hesitate to contact our office. Thank you for your ongoing support. Those wishing to make a donation may do so in the following ways: Online at www.sharelife.org Through their parish, making cheques payable to “ShareLife – Name of Parish – Hurricane Katrina Relief” By credit card through the ShareLife office at: 1-800-263-2595

Hurricane Katrina Letter of Solidarity from the CCCB President

Most Rev. William Skylstad President United States Conference of Catholic Bishops 3211 Fourth Street NE Washinton, DC 20017-1194 U.S.A. Dear Bishop Skylstad: It is with heavy heart that your brother Bishops in Canada see the devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina in the states along the Gulf Coast. Much of the area affected was part of the original territory of the Diocese of Quebec from 1674; many of our Acadian people found refuge in that area in the time of their expulsion from their homeland in the mid-18th century; and many of the same French explorers and missionaries who traversed Canada also visited or worked in that area of the United States of America. For many Canadians, especially Catholics and including your brother Bishops here in Canada, that part of your vast land evokes profound emotions. Please convey our thoughts and especially our prayers to our brother Bishops, not only but particularly in the ecclesiastical provinces of New Orleans and Mobile. We remember them and their people, especially those who are victims of the hurricane and those involved in relief efforts. Furthermore, in response to a number of requests from Canadians, our Conference will be informing the dioceses in Canada that donations to assist the stricken areas of the United States may be sent through the Red Cross or directly to Catholic Charities USA. Sincerely and fraternally in Our Lord, + Brendan M. O’Brien Archbishop of St. John’s President Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops

APPROVAL PROCESS FOR DISTRIBUTION OF MATERIAL FROM OUTSIDE ORGANIZATIONS

Schools are often approached by local businesses and organizations to distribute printed material to students and/or to post notices within the school. The school principal has the authority to decide whether such material is appropriate for distribution or display. The needs of the local school community, the nature of the organization/business (i.e. charitable, non-profit, in keeping with Catholic traditions and values, as well as the policies and practices of the Toronto Catholic District School Board) should be considered in determining whether or not to approve such material. In cases where an organization/business wishes to utilize the Board's courier service for the distribution of material throughout the system, or to a large number of schools, the request should be redirected to the

FRENCH FOR THE FUTURE CONTEST

Reader’s Digest, The University of Ottawa, and the nonprofit organization French for the Future are teaming up to give Canadian high school essay writers the chance for publication, travel, cash awards – and three $20,000 university scholarships.

Students for whom French is either a mother tongue or a learned language are eligible to submit essays in French arguing the advantages of being proficient in more than one language.

Reader’s Digest will publish the winning essay in a future issue — and pay $1,000 to the top student writer. Second and third place finishers will have their essays posted on our French-language web site, selection.ca, and be awarded $500 and $250 respectively.

As well, the top three finalists and 38 other essayists will have all expenses paid to participate in French for the Future’s National Ambassador Youth Forum in Fredericton, New Brunswick on February 24 – 27, 2006. And, in a gesture of astonishing support, the University of Ottawa has offered to award $20,000 scholarships to each of the top three writers.

The essay contest is meant to highlight the work of French for the Future, an organization founded in 1997 to promote bilingualism and biculturalism in Canada.

Submissions should be a maximum 1,000 words, and must be received at the French for the Future offices by 12:01 p.m. Friday October 21, 2005.

Essayists can either fax their entries to 1-866-506-7589 or e-mail them to [email protected]. Judges at Reader’s Digest will choose the three winners from a short-list drawn up by French for the Future. The top essay will be published in French, and English translation, in our February edition.

For more information,

visit the French for the Future (Le francais pour l’avenir) website: http://www.french-future.org/.

Let us remember in prayer the souls of the deceased members of the TCDSB

community and their loved ones, particularly the following who have died recently... for these we pray:

May the angels lead them into paradise. May the martyrs come to welcome them into the

new and eternal Jerusalem. The holy sacrifice of the Mass will

be offered for their souls. May they rest in peace.
