EDIlORIAL

Of the nnny e:<cellent lectures at the EuropeanCreationist Congress, perhaps the npst interesting to me

was that of Dr.tldtry Kcr:snetsov. He re5nrted thespectacular progress of the lbsow freatiqr ScienceFbllcnship, of which he is Chairrnan. Forrned only tr,vo yearsago with 12 people, follcrying a visit by Dn.Duane Gishfrom USA, it nor,v has about 200 n€rnbers, nearly all of vitrqnare professional scientists.

Attitr:des to creationism are very different in Russiafrqn those in USA or the UK. Firstly, in reaction to 70years of State-controlled infornntion, there is a veryhigh degree of interest in all news frqn abroad. In anatnosphere of liberation, there is n*r much spiritual andacademic freedorn. University professors believe instudents hearing all- sides of an argrnnent, and debate onevolution/creation is encor:raged ! State TV has broadcastdiscussions on origins, and also evangelical Christianprogranmes (e.9. Billy Graham). Tlre I.CSF holds regir:larneetings, has five full-tirne staff and a laboratory forresearch, and publishes and distributes literature, forwhicK there is a great dernand. For example, the pamphlet'Bone of Contention', by Sylvia Baker, sold 60,000 copiesin a rncnth ! Russian scientists are novr also writing andtransJating creationist books. lhese activities are hel5:edby funding fran E\rangelical missions in USA and Canada.

This all sounds vionderful- ne\i/s for the cause ofCreation Science - but rnight we not ask - WHAT HAVECATIIOLIC SCIET{IISTS, THEOINGIANS AND CLERGY BET}I DOIT.6 ?Sadly, I fear the worst- prcrnrting evolutionisrn. And theRussian Orthodox Church ? I was told j-t recently pblisheda docunent officially supporbing the vierps of Ft.Teilhardde Chardin !

Evangelical protestants, Seventh Day Mventists, brnrcns and Jehovah's Witnesses have gained thousands ofconverts in rnany countries in the post-Vatican II years.Nc'v'/ they are noving in to the traditionally Catholiccountries of Eastern Europe. A cqnron factor of all these

sects is the rejection of Evol-utionism, and the acceptanceof Cenesis as historically true. Such a belief is actuallyalso Catholic teaching, but it has been too wetl hidden inrecent years. Unless Catholic creationism reaches EasternEurope very rcn, I predict that countries like Polandw111 increasingly be protestantised, just as has happenedin l"ati-n Anerica. l*ren are the Bishops going to wake up towhat is happening and reaffirm the traditional doctrines ?

OUR HEAVENLY PATRONS

St.Itrqnas Aquinas (Ilbrch 7th)

Born in L226, he entered the Dqainicans j-n 1243 andis renouned for his teaching of philosophy and theology, collected in the l9-volrrne treatise "Sufirna Ttreologica". Hehas been styled 'Ttre Angelic Doctor' on account of hishunLility. Ehrtler rarrites of him : "llcthing was ncrerenrarkable than his nreekness on all occasions. His tan5:erwas never ruffled in the heat of any disprte, nor by anyinsult." For his great wisdcm, he has been proclainredpa.tron of Catholic schools. He died on March 7t)'r, L274.

vb have good cause to pray to St.Ihqnas for a calmmanner in dealing with contentious issues, and for hisassistance in eradicating the false philosophies beingtaught unchallenged in nany schools today.

St.Bonaventure (Ju1v l4th)

'Born in J-22I, his life was saved fron grave il-lnessthrough the intercession of St.Ftancis. In gratitude,Bonaventure joined the Franciscans in 1243. I(ncnvn as 'TtreSeraphic Doctorr, his zeal and clarity of theologicalteaching was natched by an ardent charity for God and hisfel1ow nran. In L272, he wrote the rHexaerneron on the SixDays of Creationr , and soon aftenvards vras rnade Cardinalof ALbano. His doctrinal expositions at the Council ofLyons made a valuable contribution to the healing ofschisms. He di"ed on July 14th, L274.

One famous reply he nade to his friend St.Thonas, wlren pointing to a crucifix he said: "This is the sourceof all my knovrledge. I study only Jesus Christ, and Himcrucified. "

It4ay St.Ebnaventure guide us in expounding thedoctrine of creation with charity, especially towards ourseSnrated Christian brethren.

-9-St.Ivlichael the Archanqel (Septenrber 29th)

The nanre I'lichael means, in Hebrew, "wllo is like toGod ?" and recalls the batt]e in heaven betrarcen "theprince of the heavenJ-y host" and the devil, a battle which@an with Lucifer's rebellion and continues dcrv,n theages. St.l4ichael and his angels are Ctrrist's alliesagainst Satan and his devils, who have wrought such havocin Catholic souls through the spread of false anddeceitful philosophies and errors, and provoking enrnityeven betroeen fel}ow C-atholics over issues Iike Evolution.

Of all creation, only the angels share our nature inhaving innrortal supernatural sou1s, and are thereforeespecially able to assist us in what essentially is aspiritual contest between Divine ltuth and satanicfalsehood. As Protector of the Church, we ask St.Michaelto help especially the Pope, Hierarchy, Clergy andReligious to understand and reject the errors ofevolutionism that are causing such harm to the -Church.

Tlre Inrnaculate Conception (Decenrber 8th)

On Decenrber 8th 1854, Pope Pius IX defined the dogna:"Ttre rncst Blessed Virgin Mary...was preserved 'f,ree frorna}l stain of original sin." At Lourdes on March 25th lB5B,the Feast of the Annunciation, Our I-ady declared toSt.Bernadette: "I am the Inrnaculate Conception." Her finalappearance at I-ourdes was on July l6th that year.

trleanwhrile, in England, - on July lst l-858, CharfesDarwin's paper on 'survival of the fittest' was read tothe Linnaea-n Society, follcx,,ring which he began writing'Ttre Origin of S5:ecies', published in 1859, to .vtrich canclearly be traced the source of the nrodernist attacks onthe Christian doctrine of Original Sin, and hence also theabove dogrna of the InmacuLate Conception.

hle ask Our Lady to restore in nrankind a trueunderstanding of fallen hunran nature, and theacknowledgen€nt and }ove of her Son, Our Iord Jesus Christ.

TEACHERS AI{D PARH\rIS BEI^IARE !

Ft.Peter Lessiter

One thing which those resgrcnsible for young people

today- be they parents or teachers- must be aware of, arecertain trends in Education. I r,'ould draw your attentionto an important one - namely the dishonest way thehypothesis of Evolution is put over as if it were an

established fact through books, nngazines, radio and

television prograrrres and other meerns of ccmnunication and

education. In preSnring naterial for a short pa.perback on

this subject and a cassette-bpe, I was alarned at wtrat is

"*o l" general circulation for children of al-l ages.

For example- rrc1I illustrated pictures are collected(by the under 7's) to canplete a chart showing hor,v life@an, frcm a group of chernicals leading up to man.

Another example- in the Junior School- is the kplorerSeri-es "Ho!v Man @an", and in Secondary Schools there isa speci,al course (for the 1l-13 year olds) "Man inSociety" (MACOS). Encyclopaedias, especially those used

in schools, assune rnan's evolution frqn anirrnls as if itvrere an established scientific fact-

Catholics ought to be aware of exactly where ue standon this subject- hory does the Church guide us ?

Page 11: DAVLIGM - Special Creationdaylightorigins.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/...neetings, has five full-tirne staff and a laboratory for research, and publishes and distributes literature,

In 1950, Pope Pi-us XII laid down these nain points(in the Encycli-cal "Hunani Generis")

(f) The Soul is a direct creation by God.

(2') D<perts nny discuss whether the man's body came

frqn pre-existing li-ving rnatter- giving a careful- and

balanced assessnent of all the evidence for and againstsuch a hypothesis.

(3) Dle regard must be nrade to what the Sources ofRevelation have to say on this subject (here the Pope was

referring to the Book of Genesis and also to certain New

Testament texts ).(4) Ttre Pope added that, regrettably, some have

taken advantage of this freedqn of debate to teach as an

estabh-shed fact_ wLrat is, as yet, an unproven scientifichlrpothesis.

It is sad to say that nany Catholics,. includingclergy, are teaching that God created through Evolution-without, of course, providing any truly objective

Scriptural- or Scientific evidence for or against such a

staternent. Ttris is not just -iirisleading- it is fallingright into the hands of those who teach Evolution to getrid of the idea of God being behind Creation at'all, ornan being different frcrn anirnals (ile. he has an innxrrtalspiritual soul-) or firan needing Redenption frsn the Fallwhich has affected the whole hunran race- after all_,christianity is a retigion essentia.l-ry of Redernption and

Salvation.

Page 12: DAVLIGM - Special Creationdaylightorigins.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/...neetings, has five full-tirne staff and a laboratory for research, and publishes and distributes literature,

-12-

Vihren you con€ to thi-nk of it, it is ratherconvenient for a Ctrristian to call on God to create a soulj.n an evolved ape- just because you happen to believe inGod and in nan's innortal soul. If you can arrive at ntanthrough a process of Evolution (which is whrat nrcst trueEvolutionists believe and teach), vfiy bother about God ora soul or nnn's eternal desti-ny at all ?

What Catholics must do, above all, to preserve theFaith, and to be good scientists on this subject, is to beclear on these facts :

(f) Ttre evidence for evolution is very guestionable-(a) Nc true evidence exists that life enrergedfrsn chernicals.(b) IIo new species has cone about as a resultof mutations, natural selction or survival ofthe fittest.(c) llo nnn has ever evolved fron an ape.

(2) Ttre Book of Genesis does tilClf consist of a sereisof myths or symbolic s6Ties. There are antrnber of books today whrich shovr thal Genesis is

, probably the nxrst historical and balancedscientific explanation of our origins we couldever hope to find, without falling into theerror of "reading into" the Genesis account ofCreation sanething wlrich it does not say.

!!hat are the real dangers of teaching Evolution ?First of all- it is only a theory, and as yet unproven.

Secondly, it by-passes the spiritual nature of rnan.Man's supernatural spiritual soul is never mentioned byEvolutionists.

Thirdly- it ornits any su6:ernatural intervention inrnan's life by God, i.e. no miracles or Resurrection.

Fourthly- it conceals frcrn young people especi-ally,man's true origins, nature, and final destiny. Itcondernns them-to a frustlEffig l-ife, @poseor meaning.

Above all renernber- man is not a step-up frqn theapes - "He is a little 1o,ler than the angels" (ps.8 w5-B)

Although the book is ncor out of print, the articleprovides a strong .argwent c-onnecting evolutionisrn withthe abortion nentality. Please note, hoviever, that thevievrs of the writer are not necessarily shared by SpUC.

"The Tiniest Humant', aremarkable book, has nowreached Britain. It containsthe transcripb of evidencegiven to thc U.S.'Congressby two of the world's mosthighly honoured scientists

Professor Sir WilliamLiley (now Professor ofPerinatal Physiology in thePos(graduate School at theUniversity of Auckland, inhis homeland. New Zea-

Professor Jerome Leieune (Professor of Funda-mental Genetics at the University Rene Descartes inParis) won world acclaim when he demonstrated thatmongolbm was due to an extra chtomosome, for whichhe received the Kennedy Award preented to him b-rthe late President John Kennedy. Among many otherhonours he also received what is tno*n as a specialdistinction for scientific writers involved in biologl'Tromthe Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.'l ogether Liley and Lejeune debunk the mythsstemming from Neo-Darwinism and which form thebasis for the philosophy of many in the pro.abortioncamp.

The book, THE TINIEST HUMAN (edited byRobert L. Sassone) is here reviewed by agnostic writer,THERESA CROSHAW.

Evaltrate the many rheories of

EvolutionIt is commonly thought that everybody

who is anybody in scicnce bclieves in thethcory of evolution This is far from thetruttr" A bricf look at what scientists are

saying about thc subjcct is enough toexplode that ideaFor example:

'These arc confusing times for thosewho takc an intercst in Darwinism.Obscrvers arc still faced with a bcwilder-ing varicty of scientilic opinions, some

character." This was written in a reviewof a book entitled 'What DarwinBcgan," intcnded to guidc readers'through the cvolution jungle" (f/erkientisl 12 ScpL,1985, p. 59).

The thcory has never been stnrt of cri-tiqs. Much of thc scverest criticism hascome from cvolutionists For, unlike thepopular mncept of the thcory, there isnol just onc agreed scientific theory ofevolution, but therc are many conflict-ing oncs This writer has a list of over 50

conflicting theories of evolution lt is

intcresting to note that as each ne*thcory is offered, its author takcs greatpains to point out the crrors in prcvioustheorics Thc mort new thcories are putforward, the easier it becomes to fault(he prcvious ones!

Early Critics"fhis situation began early with Darwin

grinting out the errors in the work ol St

George Mivarl 'The Gencsis ofSpccies." l{e also slammed the earlicrtheory ol Lamarck that acquiredcharacteristrcs could be inhcrited. In

turn, Mivarl pnurcd vrrrn on Darwrn'r"puerile hypothasi.,'

ln Darwin's'Origin of Spccies," he

devoted a wholc chapter to thcdifficultics that hc could sec might bc

raiscd against his thcory. lf you canbring yoursclf to read the worl- you willfind it full of over 800 spcculationsQuite unscicntific in fact! Countlesstimes he uses zuch phrascs as "wesuppos€," wc may assume,"'perhaps" and *it may have bcen."These are not the words of scientificallyestablished fact Darwin cven admittcdtbat '?hen we dcscend to details we

changed" Then he wrotc,'lf it could be

dcmonstrated that any complcx organexisted which could not possibly have

becn formed by numcrous succesiveslight modifications, my theory wouldatxolutcly break down" (p.189).

Scicntists Opposcd Darwio

Whcn the'Origrn of Spccies" was lintpublished, Darwin was very dis-appointed to find that it was beingcriticised as a mass of speculation. ltwas pointed out that it was not suustantiated by thc cvidence he offered. His scientific critics claimed that he had

descrted the path of inductive scicnce toindulgc himsclf in a wild hypothesisoutsidc thc realm of sciencc, Mcet of his

contemporaries in the scicntific worldheld the view that a thcory musl kproved before it could bc rcgarded as

acceptable scientif ic knowledge.

The noted astronomer, Sir J. F wllerschcl. callcd the thcory of NaturalSelection, put lorward by Darwin, as *a

law of higgeldy-piggcldy," thus express-ing his contempt lor a theory that rclic(iirii a *'holc serics of haphazarii

known later, was an cmpty tautology, because in the survival of the fittest, it isobviously the fittest who survive.

known as the'Hopcful Monster" thmry.and many pourcd scorn on such as un-scientific idca.

Just h<rw unscientific spcculators canget was illustrated by the amazing state-mcnt of C. Fonnamperuma inthemical Studies in thc Origin of Lifc"(Spce Lifc kicnce I. 1968, p.64) wherehe wrotc, "Spontaneous gencration of a

The'Scientific American" for July.1985, p. 54, in an article headcd 'TheEvolution of Darwinism." reviewed the*modem synthesis" of W. B. being contrary to nature in the phrasc'Natura non saltum" (Nature does notmakc jumps)

Thc Shifting Thcory

Only a ycar later, thg same NilesEldredge wrote in thc New Scientist (5lune, 1966, p.54) that hc was looking for'an evolution tlrcory more in tune withlife's actual history on earth." lt wouldsecm that bis own theory ol a ycarbeforc hld not convinced its author. Then whcn his asscriate, Stephen J.

FACI}G THE FACTS OF LIFE

Book review by Antluty fibvard of

"The Facts of Life - Sh ,

by Richard Uiltm.FOURIH ESTATE LIIIITED, London. ISBN 1-85702-027-8. f16.99

Another creationist book by a Chrristianfundamentalist ? Bnphatically not ! Richard l{ilton claimsno religious convictions, and refuses the 1abel'creationist', but he presents a vigorous refutation ofneo-Darwinism based entirely on the evidence of science. His concern about evolution and educati-on arose frqnhearing the unscientific ideas his daughter was beingtaught at school. After ten years' research, he nols asksthe question: 'Should evolution be taught if it is nottrue ?l

'l,he author's Snsition of agnosticisrn, by providing noreligious target for attack, renders his case all the npreeffqctive, es5:ecially as a r{reapon to destroy the basis of'theistic evolution'. His welldocr-lrented r,"ork gives theIie to the cqnncn reflex defence of evolutionists that allscientistsevolution, discovering

areandtheas

united in their belief in the fact ofthat current debate is only--Sout

mechanism of the process. Backed by hisexperlenceinspired krnsp].

r as engineer and science journalist, andby an interest in geology and trnlaeontology, hegeology and Snlaeontology, he

explains his doubts and difficulties with the generaltheory of evolution in a 1ucid, non-technical and veryreadable style. His argunrents focus on key issues, usingevidence nostly familiar to readers of recent. cri-tics ofevolution, such as Hitching and Denton (though neither ofthern is nrentioned). Unlike thern, he dares to citecreationists like ltoris, Barnes and Cook, against thevalidity of the Geological Co1unn and an ancient Earth. These are the supren€ 'sacred co'rrs' of evolutionists, aswithout thern evolution theory is doorned, and for anagnostic to respect their arguments breaks new ground innon-creationist literature.

The attack on the slznthetic theory is devastating.Backed by the adrnissions of highty qualified scientists, evolution is shcryn to be built on false assumptions offossil fornntion and radio-active dating. The geologicalrecord provides no evidence of evolutionary change, andnatural selection and mutations cannot provide an adequatenechanism for i-t. Ileither can support be found frqnenbryologyr'vestigial organs' or socal-Ied'convergentevolution'. The evidence for 'apenen' .is criticallyrevievied and found wanting. l,lilton exaraines the recent useof 'ccnq>uter si.rnulation' of tbtural Selection',trnpularised by Dr.Richard Dawkins, and exposes it asunsound and futile- Using engineeri-ng principles, heanalyses design in l.lature, pa.rticularly the systenaticdevelolment of the living organism, and proves that'chance' is totally unable to explain it. Yet he stopsshort of the logical conclusion that 'design reguires aDesigner', which ought.to be self-evident to an engineer,as he presurnably felt unable to verify His existenceenpirically !

Recent attenrpts to find aLternatives to Darwinibm alsoreceive consideration, such as Goul-d and Eldridge'srRrnctuated Equi-libria' and Hoyle's'Life frqn S;nce'scenarios. Surprisingly, credence is given to certaine<periments that suptrnsedly supSnrt Larnarkisn - theinheritance of acguired adaptations, generally abhorred inprinciple by Darwinists, although he does not seem tothink it provides a totally adeguate explanati.on oforigins !

For much of this book, on-e could be reading the viewsof a scientific creat.ionist, though he ornits the popuJ-arargiunent that evolution conflicts with the Second Law ofThernrcdynandcs (natural increase in disorder)'. In atrnstscript, he attenrpts to ansr,,rer'anticilnted. attacks onhis viev'rs frcrn those wtro display 'intellectual trrroganceand authoritarianism'. He denies any religious motivationfor his Snsition, referring to it as ,open-mindedignorance' .

Page 24: DAVLIGM - Special Creationdaylightorigins.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/...neetings, has five full-tirne staff and a laboratory for research, and publishes and distributes literature,

-24-It{ilton rightly claims that Dar:vrinism is a philosophy,

not science, yet he hopes that future researches inscience, perhaps arising frqn nrcdern physics, *ig6fprovide ans$rers to the guestion of origins. Such a vis, vseenrs contradictory. If the events of pre-history areunobservable and unrepeatable, the scientific nethod cannever provide direct evidence of their nature, whetherthey arose through creation or evolution. lrlhat rrc know ofthe natural r"orld points logically to freatioiFnotEvolution ! Ttre essential issue is indeed one ofphilosophy - naturalisrn or supernaturalisrn ? Since thepurpose of this book rests on the belief that science canderncnstrate the falsehood of the evolution philosophy, ifr!can the author not accept that science could defiDnstratethe truth of the creation phitosophy ? It rnight also bearguffiat the 'agnosti-c' vi"r^rpoi"t, far frqn being theonly 'independent and objective' one, is just as much a'faith Srosition' as absolute trust in evolution by chanceor creation by deity. In fact, it rnay be less crediblethan either, resting solely on the authority of anindividual's personal. opinion, neither concurring with thenajority of sup;nsed ex5:erts, nor accepting vfrat millionsof believers claim to be the revealed Slord of the Creator. To refuse to accept the logical alternative of-creationmay'be purely prejudice against the existence of thesupernatural, or perhaps the result of an unwillingrness toface up to its personal and npra] implications. Manyscientists vfio share lulilton's view of evolution haveprogressed to the rational conclusion that the r,,rorld wascreated by a Suprenre Being, !!ho has provided a record ofHis Acts in the Bible. Such a belief is reached throughthe gift of supernatural Faith, freely given by God tothose open to receive it.

'The Facts of Life' strikes a nxrrtal blorr,r at theparadiEn that has ruled biology and geology for 130 years, but provides no alternative to it. Unbiased readers shouldnext investigate the alternative claims of creationscience for thenrselves ; a consequence wLrich scetresevolutionist revier.'ers whro have bitterly condenrred it !

This reaction has not only provided welcqrc publicity, butbetrayed the bigoted attitudes of certaj-n professionalevolutionincngers. Let us hope that the fair-minded reader(and the author) nny be led frqn this book to the answersof the Christian Gospel.

In May, I gave a talk at ko Fide Fbrun in Iondonentitled "Creation Science- the Catholic Revival", ofwhich a cassette should soon be available. I also gave ashort talk at the European Geationist Congress in August, where I ran a bookstall and sold €7O-vprth of nraterials, and gained several new mernbers.
