The 4-H Clover In 1907 or 1908, the first emblem used nationally was designed by O. H. Benson, superintendent of Wright County (Iowa) schools, as a three-leaf clover with three "H's" signifying head, heart, and hands.
A four-leaf clover design with H's appeared informally around 1908. In 1911, Benson suggested four H's -- "Head, Heart, Hands and Hustle... head trained to think, plan and reason; heart trained to be true, kind and sympathetic; hands trained to be useful, helpful and skillful; and the hustle to render ready service, to develop health and vitality..." The present design was approved in 1911, at a Washington D.C. meeting of club leaders. O.B. Martin is credited with H's representing Head, Heart, Hands and Health.
The 4-H name and emblem have United States federal protection under federal code 18 U.S.C. 707, passed in 1939. This federal protection carries more protection than a trademark and a copyright. The Secretary of Agriculture is given responsibility for the 4-H name and emblem, at the direct re-quest of the U.S. Congress. The 4-H emblem in a unique category of protected emblems, along with the U.S. Presidential Seal, Red Cross, Smokey Bear and the Olympic rings.

4-H Photography Club
The 4-H Photography Club will start back on October 18, at 4:30 p.m. There are a few openings for those, age 11 and up, if anyone is interested. The dues are $10.
4-H Civic Engagement
As part of 4-H Civic Engagement the Fall Food Drive starts in September. This year the food drive will help elderly low income residents of Daviess County. Club members are asked to bring at least one non-perishable food item to your September club meeting. If you are in a Photography or Jr. Homemaker’s club that will not begin meeting until October, you may bring your items to the Extension Office during regular business hours. All items should be within date and nonperishable.
As a new school year has begun, so has a new year of club meetings. Cloverbuds will resume meetings on September 8, 5:30 p.m. at the Extension Office. This meeting will also be the time to fill out your 2016-2017 enrollment form for your Cloverbud if you have not already done so. Meetings will include a nutrition lesson with a snack and an activity focusing on a particular 4-H area. Some highlights that focus on Cloverbuds during the meeting year include a Cloverbud Christmas that takes place the first Saturday in December and the Cloverbud Lock-In at the end of the school year. We are also excited to be welcoming Lily Young, one of our 4-H Teen Leaders, who will be working with Cloverbuds this year. If you have any questions please contact Angie at 270-685-8480 or [email protected].
