Story Theme: David & Goliath Scripture Text: 1 Samuel 16-18 Teaching Focus: To pray and God will help you Duration: 5 weeks _________________________________________________________ Learning Objective for Leader: In this series, the leaders will be trained in 3 different teaching methods – teaching story through flash cards, reciting song with actions, stick puppets & seek & find the pictures.

We will have 3 different stations in which the leaders will take turn to learn the different methods as they go through the 3 different stations in 5 weeks. In these 3 stations, leaders will learn that they need to have voice variation, facial expressions, children interaction, sequencing or step in telling a story to pre-schoolers.

Biblical Learning Objective for Children: To teach children that when they are frightened, they can pray and ask God for help.

Value that children will pick up in: Loving God and this can be learnt through trusting Him when they are afraid. Loving Self through learning to be brave.

3 Station Activities: The story of David and Goliath will presented in 3 different ways/methods because children at this age learn by repetition and it will presented in a way that is easily understood by them. Leaders need only to concentrate on learning to tell the story using one method each week. Plan of rotating among the leaders will be assign by TLs so that leaders will get to learn all the 3 ways to tell a story. As you tell the stories, choose to focus on only the portion when David confronted Goliath.

Station Activities #1 - Story Board

Skills children will pick: Narration, vocabulary, logical thoughts, focusing & memory.

Card 1 (Pictures taken from “The First Step Bible)

Wording on placard: Hello! My name is David. I am a shepherd boy. I take good care of sheep.

Ldr to say; Now children, look for this picture no 1. Yes This is David. Look what is around David? Sheep! He takes care of sheep. How many sheep are there? Let’s count 1, 2, 3…. 3 sheep! What does David has on his side? Yes he has a pouch.

Card 2 (Picture taken from “The First Step Bible) Wording on placard: Today I have come to see my big brothers. My big brothers are soldiers. But all the soldiers are afraid. Why are they afraid?

Ldrs to say: Look now at picture no 2. Today, David has come to visit his brother who is a solider. How many solider are there? 1, 2, 3, 4 soldiers. Why are all the soldiers so afraid? Who are they afraid of? Who is that tall huge person?

Card 3 (Picture taken from “The First Step Bible”)

Wording on placard: They are afraid of this giant! This giant does not love God. This giant wants to hurt God’s people.

Ldr to say: Now let’s look at picture nos 3. In this picture, we can see who the soldiers are afraid of this giant! This is Goliath. He is not nice. He is not afraid of God! He is mean to God’s people.

Card 4 (Picture taken from “The First Step Bible”) Wording on placard: David was scared of Goliath. David was thinking how big & strong Goliath is. But David also knows that God will help him to fight Goliath. David prayed to God.

Ldr to say: Let’s find picture number 4. Yes the one with David praying. David is scared too of Goliath. David is thinking how big & strong Goliath is. But David also know that God will help him fight Goliath. David pray to God for help.

Card 5 (Picture taken from “The First Step Bible”)

Wording on placard: Goliath is big. Goliath is strong. But God makes me stronger! Guess who I am?

Ldr to say: Look for picture nos 5. In this picture you can see Goliath all mean and big and frightening. Goliath is big. Goliath is strong. But God makes David stronger! Because David prayed and asked God to help him!

Card 6 (Picture taken from “The First Step Bible”)

Wording on placard: God makes me strong! The giant comes down. And God’s people are not afraid anymore.

Ldr to say: Last picture…nos 6. That’s the one where Goliath has lost! God made David strong when David prayed! The giant Goliath has come down! And God’s people are not afraid anymore.

There is altogether of 6 picture cards, each with a simple storyline to be told. The objective of using this method of teaching is to teach the children sequencing. Ideally, each child is to be given 1 set of 6 pictures cards, but we may not have that luxury, as such we will have a group of 3 children to share one stack of cards. As leaders tell the story weekly, they will direct child to pick out the pictures in correct sequences. Pls take note that you will need to have variation. Below are some weekly suggestions:

For Week 1 Show card in sequence and read out the lines as shown on each card. Mix up the cards order and ask children which card comes first, second and so on. They will need help as they may not understand what is expected of them.

For Week 2 Repeat as in week 1, but this time you may want to add some descriptions of dialogue with child over each card. Again them ask to pick out the cards, this time reduce the amount of help offered.

For Week 3 & 4 Pls paste sticker to cover number on each card and the children are to guess the sequencing of the stories. Children may need help. Then tell the story again.

For Week 5 Tell the story using the picture cards again. Instead of mixing the picture cards do the sticker booklet instead which we will be getting the children to do as craft. After going through the story, work with child on the story booklet. All 6 pictures will be made into stickers. Direct child to look at the 6 pictures and ask child which picture should they paste first. If you see the children struggling, then reduce the number of pictures to choose from, e.g. instead of doing all 6 picture stickers on their own, ask child to do 2-3 pictures on their own. The rest of the pictures, you help them.

Station Activities #2 – Seek & Find Picture taken from “The Candle Seek & Find Learning Book” by L. J Sattgast, illustrated by Joe Stites.

Skill children will learn: Visual matching, vocabulary, cognitive skill, observation & focusing. What to do in this station: A picture of David confronting Goliath is presented to children. At the bottom of the picture are 8 items – sword, David, Goliath, king, helmet, sling, soldier & spear. You are to direct children to find these items, one at a time, in the picture. Let the children take turn to do look for the items. Do direct children to count the number of stone. Station Activities #3 – Stick Puppet with God’s Word

Skill children will learn: Interaction, variety of voice, vocabulary. Aim: To show N2 parents that reading the Bible can be done in a fun way. For N3 & N4 children, the word of God is presented in a fun way that they will understand and remembered. Ldrs to note: 1 Samuel 16-17 is broken into bite sizes (7 scenes) and they will be printed on 7 cards which will represent 7 scenes. To involve the parents in your group you may want to give them some of the cards and get them to read out the wordings in these cards and accordingly to the sequence (scenes). Cards are numbered. Leaders’ role is to use puppet to re-enforce the story line as the parents or co leader read in verses/cards.

These are the items that children are to look for in this picture.

These puppets will be fixed with hands and legs, etc… A

stick will be fixed on the back of these puppets, so to give the children the idea that David &

Goliath are moving.

Boulders (children will cut)

David’s praying (children will cut)

“Fallen” Goliath (Ldrs to prepare)

Instruction to leader who giving instruction for craft (must read): Pls take note that today’s craft will involved some teaching, as you show the children how the craft is to be done, pls weave in the teaching. Before the children do the craft, do sub-divide the children into smaller group and assign leaders to this smaller group. Their role is to reinforce what has been taught during the briefing. Due to the sequence of the story, the pasting of the cut out pictures is as follow: Step One – to paste the boulders Step Two – to paste “David” praying Step Three – to paste “Fallen” Goliath What you do--Worksheet

1. Distribute one worksheet per child. 2. Before you get the children to do their craft, pls show

the children the story behind this worksheet - Using the worksheet, leader to say: “Children, tell me who is this giant? Yes Goliath! And David is here. And all these are the soldiers.”

3. The soldiers are all so scared of Goliath! So they need a place to hide. Where can they hide? (hold up one boulder cutting) ooh… they all run and hide behind this big rock! Here paste the rock in front of the soldiers. (help children cut out the three boulders pictures. With sticky tape, cover all soldiers behind the three boulders.)

4. Ooh… but did David hide also? No? But David was also scared of Goliath. So why didn’t David hide also? (hold up David praying cutting) ooh… that’s because David prays. When David is scared, he prays and then he is not scared anymore. You know why? Because when we pray, God is with us! (turn to reverse side of David prays cutting and read out the words to children). Then instruct the children to paste “David praying” cut out picture over the David at battle picture.

5. See when David prays, he becomes brave and strong because God is with him (flip David pray flap back & forth while you talk). So now David can fight Goliath.

6. When David throw his stone…Goliath came tumbling down!! (hold up Goliath down cutting). Here paste this over the standing Goliath.

7. Complete the craft by reading the memory verse that is printed on the Goliath down cutting. Write child”s name on his worksheet.
