J. CURATOR'S REPOR T THE BERLIN AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY SEPTEMBER 10 TO OCTOBER 13, 2015 A TWO MONTH REPORT DAVID BAKER WINS OUR BEAUTIFUL QUILT AT BAHS' ANNUAL DINNER MEETING! David Baker of Berlin, pictured above, won the above quilt in the raffle that was conducted to help raise funds for the replacement of the roof on the genealogical building of the Berlin Area Historical Society. The drawing came at the close of the annual banquet on September 10, 2015 at the Berlin Community Building. The surprise resident of Meadow Street in Berlin was on hand to pick-up the quilt. The braided rug also awarded in the raffle was won by Richard Poorbaugh of Somerset, another member of the Berlin Area Historical Society. COincidentally both Dave and Dick are graduates of the Berlin Brothersvalley lligh School. We had 223 paid reservations for the beef dinner served by the Berlin Firemen's Auxiliary. DAVID BAKER WINS OUR BEAUTIFUL QUILT AT BAHS ANNUAL DINNER MEETING

O n September 14 2015 Mary Margaret (Lepley) Wahl of Michigan City Indiana visited BAHS with her brother-in-law and sister the Rev Ray E and Marie Elizabeth (Lepley) Gnagey of Meyersdale purposely to present us with a copy of the Harvey

Victor and Bessie Mabel (Hall) Lepley familys genealogy The genealogy was completed in time for the early September reunion of the descendants of that former Wittenburg farm family Their parents Harvey and Bessie Lepley were also featured in the September 2015 issue of Farm Field and Garden Magazine a copy of which they are holding in the picture Your Curator had the pleasure of writing that story Mary Wahl is the widow ofHarvey Geiger Wahl a native of the Meyersdale area

Bessie Mabel (Hall) Lepley and her sisters Annie Hall and Velma Kennell were the daughters of John Wesley and Sarah Ann Sadie(W eigle) Hall who at one time were residents of 1007 Main Street in Berlin In 1913 the John and Sadie Hall family were residents of Allegheny Township Somerset County That year Annie L Hall was the teacher at the one-room Hillegass School in Allegheny Township (Sarver Church Comer) The pupils of the Hillegass School and the school board members are listed on the following page - a record taken from a 1913 souvenir school booklet that belonged to the late Annie L Hall

After retiling from the ministry the Rev Ray E Gnagey and his wife Marie returned to their native Somerset County for their retirement years Rev Gnagey is 97 years of age

Berlin Brothersvalley High School donated a copy of their 2015 Bervalon Our sympathy is extended to board member Carl A Hay Jr in the passing of his mother Marjorie (Meyers) Hay on September 20 2015 at the age of 102 years 7 months and 10 days Marjorie was likely the oldest member of BAHS Jack and Phyllis Newcomer of Hopwood presented a donation of $2500 to BAHS in memory of Mrujorie Hay

Twenty-five persons (classmates and spouses) representing the Class of 1965 at Berlin Brothersvalley High School toured BAHS facilities during a morning tour held in conjunction with their 50th year class reunion held October 32015 at the Berlin Veterans Home See the class picture that is included in this report This was Gary Estnicks high school class and he enjoyed being available to greet many ofhis former classmates

LILLIAN AND JERRY MEYERS PRESENTING ITEMS TO GARY ESTNICK Jerry and Lillian Meyers of California donated a collection plate and Book of Worship from the fonner

St Matthews Lutheran Church of Roxbury to the Berlin Area Historical Society They are shown making the presentation to Gary Estnick board member and volunteer at BARS The church was dedicated on Dec 25 1882 and the fIrst service was held on Dec31 1882 The congregation was fIrst part of the Berlin Charge until 1893 then became part of the Shanksville Charge It was sold in a sealed bid auction in October 1969 and bought by the Meyers family They used the structure as a residence and antique shop This photo and story was also published in the Somerset Daily American

VACATIONING WITH COUSINS AND FRIENDS IN GERMANY AND AUSTRIA

our curator would personally like to thank the dedicated volunteers who took care ofthe business activities at BAHS and the y

= labeling of the fall Memos during the September 18 - October 4 visit to Germany and Austria that he and his wife Virginia enjoyed with cousins and friends It was a great vacation with the most

beautiful explosions of flowers cascading over the balconies of alpine residences and guest houses in the Bavarian Alps

We divided our time with siblings Jonathan and Hannah Hoh (Hay) and their mother Helga Giesel-Hoh in the Bavarian Alps and attending the Munich Octoberfest parade and party with Jonathan and Hannahs father and friend Hartmut Hoh and Angela Heinze at their historical home in Holzfeld (above the Rhine River and St Goar) and with Marianne Huber and family who own the farm in Gerhardsbrunn (Rhineland-Pfalz) where Dave s ancestors Pioneer Simon Hoh was born in 1742 and lived until he was 25 years old and immigrated to the USA The Huber family s ancestor was a sister of Pioneer Simon Hay and took over the family farm when Simon Franz and Valentine immigrated to the USA Hartmut Hoh hosted 21 persons in Holzfeld that represent his branch of the H6h1Hay family

Hartmut Hoh s generation are seventh cousins to your curator and many other Somerset County residents The above named Hannah and Jonathan Hoh have volunteered at BAHS during their visits with David and Virginia Hay Hannah studies in Mainz while Jonathan studies in Munich

O n September 14 2015 Mary Margaret (Lepley) Wahl of Michigan City Indiana visited BAHS with her brother-in-law and sister the Rev Ray E and Marie Elizabeth (Lepley) Gnagey of Meyersdale purposely to present us with a copy of the Harvey

Victor and Bessie Mabel (Hall) Lepley familys genealogy The genealogy was completed in time for the early September reunion of the descendants of that former Wittenburg farm family Their parents Harvey and Bessie Lepley were also featured in the September 2015 issue of Farm Field and Garden Magazine a copy of which they are holding in the picture Your Curator had the pleasure of writing that story Mary Wahl is the widow ofHarvey Geiger Wahl a native of the Meyersdale area

Bessie Mabel (Hall) Lepley and her sisters Annie Hall and Velma Kennell were the daughters of John Wesley and Sarah Ann Sadie(W eigle) Hall who at one time were residents of 1007 Main Street in Berlin In 1913 the John and Sadie Hall family were residents of Allegheny Township Somerset County That year Annie L Hall was the teacher at the one-room Hillegass School in Allegheny Township (Sarver Church Comer) The pupils of the Hillegass School and the school board members are listed on the following page - a record taken from a 1913 souvenir school booklet that belonged to the late Annie L Hall

After retiling from the ministry the Rev Ray E Gnagey and his wife Marie returned to their native Somerset County for their retirement years Rev Gnagey is 97 years of age

Twenty-five persons (classmates and spouses) representing the Class of 1965 at Berlin Brothersvalley High School toured BAHS facilities during a morning tour held in conjunction with their 50th year class reunion held October 32015 at the Berlin Veterans Home See the class picture that is included in this report This was Gary Estnicks high school class and he enjoyed being available to greet many ofhis former classmates

St Matthews Lutheran Church of Roxbury to the Berlin Area Historical Society They are shown making the presentation to Gary Estnick board member and volunteer at BARS The church was dedicated on Dec 25 1882 and the fIrst service was held on Dec31 1882 The congregation was fIrst part of the Berlin Charge until 1893 then became part of the Shanksville Charge It was sold in a sealed bid auction in October 1969 and bought by the Meyers family They used the structure as a residence and antique shop This photo and story was also published in the Somerset Daily American

We divided our time with siblings Jonathan and Hannah Hoh (Hay) and their mother Helga Giesel-Hoh in the Bavarian Alps and attending the Munich Octoberfest parade and party with Jonathan and Hannahs father and friend Hartmut Hoh and Angela Heinze at their historical home in Holzfeld (above the Rhine River and St Goar) and with Marianne Huber and family who own the farm in Gerhardsbrunn (Rhineland-Pfalz) where Dave s ancestors Pioneer Simon Hoh was born in 1742 and lived until he was 25 years old and immigrated to the USA The Huber family s ancestor was a sister of Pioneer Simon Hay and took over the family farm when Simon Franz and Valentine immigrated to the USA Hartmut Hoh hosted 21 persons in Holzfeld that represent his branch of the H6h1Hay family

Hartmut Hoh s generation are seventh cousins to your curator and many other Somerset County residents The above named Hannah and Jonathan Hoh have volunteered at BAHS during their visits with David and Virginia Hay Hannah studies in Mainz while Jonathan studies in Munich
