Community Quilts What a wonderful response we received from our very generous members. We were pleased that Rebecca Robertson, Chief Program Officer at St. Vincent's, was able to join our delightful December meeting and to see some of the stockings and quilts you have made for their resi-dents in the Family Strengthening Program. Sixty-one stockings and 41 quilts were delivered the very next day.

In addition the Community Action Commission, the TAPP Program received 116 stockings. We had such fun at an afternoon party for the moms and babies who received the items you made with such care and attention.

Our next distribution will be placemats, about 12" x 18" or so, to Food From The Heart. These will be delivered for Valentine's Day, so we'd like to collect them by the February 9th meeting.

Saturday, January 28, there will be an "Open Sew" at Goleta Valley Community Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join us for some fun, some food and some sewing. We'll have items to sew, including placemats and lined shopping bags, but please feel free to come use the big tables and ironing board and work on your own project. The lined shopping bags are targeted for the senior population at St. Vincent's.

Thanks again for all you do to make these donations to those in need possible.

From the President's DeskIt’s January 2012 – the holidays are over for another year. Maybe 2012 will be the year I start sooner on that list of Christmas gifts that I insist on making every year. I love the process and truly enjoy creating that special gift but by December 19th the stress level is off the charts! I’ll let you know in November whether that new year’s resolution worked.

Our guild has many exciting things coming up in 2012. Keep an eye on your newsletter and our website to stay updated!

First, I want to thank you ALL for your generosity to our Community Quilt projects. Your productivity and giving spirit is phenomenal. Our Community Quilt Quartet was thrilled to present stockings and quilts to St. Vincent’s at our December meeting and you should all be very proud of our ability to give enough for every family in their program. If you haven’t had a chance to participate, there are many small project kits available as well as ideas and kits for larger projects. Pop over to see Carol, Barbara, Nancy or Edalee to see how you might contribute to our community quilts projects for 2012. Our January meeting will feature Melody Crust with a presentation and workshop on embellishments. We still have room in the workshop so check out our website for the links to learn more about what she will be teaching, and don’t miss the regular meet-ing for her trunk show and presentation. I’m not much of an embellishment girl right now but who knows after I take her workshop. I’m hoping to learn something to add the right touches for my challenge quilt. Have you started yours yet? The deadline is our February meeting!

We are fortunate to have many options in our area for quilt classes and retreats. Check out the class offerings for 2012 at Roxanne’s or Creation Station. And those of you that are lucky enough to get in to the classes through Adult Ed, you have great instruction and sewing time available to you. Cathe Hedrick of Santa Barbara Quilting Retreats has a couple of spots available for her February retreat with Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston. Sue Spargo and Tonye Phillips are coming in November for another great op-portunity. Creation Station sponsors Brown Bag retreats on a regular basis in Buellton. I was lucky enough to go TWICE in December. I love the inspiration and camaraderie when you spend hours and hours with a group of like-minded women working on projects. Join in the fun if you get a chance.

I hope you are looking forward to a wonderful year in 2012! My mind is overflowing with new projects — so many ideas and never enough time.

Quilt ‘til you wilt,Irelle

The Doorway Challenge 2012 Coastal Quilters Challenge Time’s awastin’! Have you decided on your design for your entry? What? Not yet?

We’ve shown you quilt examples of the door itself, inside of and outside the door. Last month we displayed a monochromatic ver-sion. Still not inspired?

Okay, how about considering concentrating on the fabric motif itself?

x Ethnic fabric: Asian, African, Australian, American Indian… x Florals x Geometrics x Abstract design x Scrappy

There are so many ways to complete this design, it’s difficult to decide, I know. But it’s time to get on it. Submissions are due at the February meeting. For complete rules and directions, check last month's newsletter or the Guild website (http://coastalquilters.org/challenge/challenge12.html).

Can’t wait to see your lovely creations!

— Marty Frolli and Barb Postma, Co-chairs

Quilt Show 2012Plans for the 2012 Quilt Show are humming along, with some of the long-range plans already taking place. Our Vendor Co-ordinators have contacted potential vendors and are receiving responses. The venue is booked and we're ready to jump full-force into planning beginning in January. Our meetings are scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to noon on the first Saturday of every month (with a possible exception here or there). If you would like to attend, please contact me by e-mail ([email protected]) for directions.

We are still in need of filling a few key positions on our Quilt Show committee. I'm including the job descriptions for these positions below, and I know that the previous volunteers would be happy to fill you in even further. Please strongly consider participating in this worthwhile and rewarding endeavor. We would particularly like to see some of our newer members step into these roles. Many of our previous leaders have volunteered for several consecutive quilt shows and need to take a much-deserved break. These posi-tions can also be shared between a couple of members.

Site Design/CoordinationCoordinate with Earl Warren Showgrounds and vendors for ban-ners and drapes to order the necessary equipment. Supervise marking floor of the site on Thursday prior to the show. Modify layout diagram if needed. Be on hand for as much of the show as possible to handle last minute requests and needs. (Previous coordinator - Kathy Draine)

JudgingIdentify, contact and book judges for days needed. Arrange loca-tion for judging and reserve space. Work with Quilt Show commit-tee to define and clarify criteria for judging. Order ribbons and/or work with satellite group making the ribbons to assure proper

quantity. Coordinates volunteers for judging day (usually the Wednesday before the show). Be on hand for judging to answer any questions or deal with any unforeseen issues. Note: This posi-tion needs to be filled immediately as judges and room need to be booked as soon as possible. (Previous coordinators - Carol Hart and Pat Masterson)

HangingWorks with large group of volunteers on Friday before the show to hang the quilts as decided by the layout committee. For hanging coordinates with the Co-Chair, who is responsible for making sure we have the proper hardware for hanging the quilts. This position also oversees dismantling the show on Sunday evening. (Previous coordinator - Naomi Hicks)

Thank you for your consideration. Our quilt shows have been successful due to the work of our volunteers — and the jobs are broken down so that it's not too overwhelming for any one person to handle. Follow the example of our esteemed leader Irelle Beatie. As a new member, she stepped into the roll of president, and seems to be having a great time!! It's a great way to meet people and feel connected to our organization.

— Karen Pickford, 2012 Quilt Show Chairperson

Thank you from New ZealandThe following is a letter Isabel Downs received by e-mail from Cath-erine McDonald, her quilt contact in New Zealand.

Hello Isabel,

I had planned to e-mail you this weekend. I was asked back in August for quilts for people who worked for our Ministry of Social Development. This is a government organization, and they not only lost their business premises in the February earthquake but also have had to deal with a lot of the people affected. In addition to this, a lot of them have had homes destroyed etc. themselves. Part of our beautiful city has been zoned red by the government, which means people can no longer live there. 47 of the Ministry staff have been affected in this way as well (i.e., can no longer live in their home and have to shift elsewhere). I kept your bundle of quilts specifically for them. It took a while to organise but only two days ago I made a presentation of the quilts to these staff. There was a morning tea and we had all the quilts on display. They had no idea they were going to get them and before the speeches some asked if they were for sale. I then spoke about how these wonderful people from the USA had made quilts to give to those affected by the quakes. I talked about how they wanted to do something personally and that each quilt was hand made with love and that the quilter wanted the recipient to know that they care, that it’s personal and they wanted to give comfort. I then said they were free to choose a quilt to take home. They were overwhelmed at the generosity of the quilters and the personal connection to them. I had a lady come and ask me if she could give me a hug of thanks. It was very emotional. While it is now over a year since our first major shake, people still need to talk about their experiences, each of them quite different. They were talking about these experiences as they chose their quilts, they helped each other chose a quilt and all clung to them as they spoke with me. There were men and women and all felt the love and compassion from your side of the world.

Regards, Catherine

Block of the Month for FebruarySWEET HEARTS Valentine’s Day will soon be here and what better time to use up those pink and red scraps that we all seem to have lingering in our stash. The winner of February’s block could make a valentine quilt for her sweetheart, or a special set of placemats and a table runner for that ro-mantic Valentine candlelight dinner, or incorporate them into a February wall hang-ing, or…..the possibilities are endless….

FABRIC:

Background: A variety of white scraps

Scraps: Reds (4 different scraps)

NOTE: Before you begin cutting please be aware that the goal is to end up with 4 hearts cut and pieced so that EACH individual heart is made from ONE fabric.

CUTTING:From background fabrics: Cut 5 squares 4 ½” and 4 squares 2 ½” From red scraps: Cut 4 squares 4 7/8” and cut 4 squares 2 7/8”

ASSEMBLY:Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 4 - 4 7/8” red squares. Cut along the diagonal lines. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the 4 - 2 7/8” red squares. Cut along the diagonal lines, creat-ing 8 small triangles.

Sew the short sides of two small red triangles to each of the 2 ½” background squares to create a triangle. Press. Sew the long side of each of these red and white triangles to the long side of a large matching red triangle. Press and square up to make a 4 ½” square.

Lay out the squares as shown in the diagram and piece together. Press. Your block should now be 12 ½” square..

If you have any questions or problems, please ask us.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

- Knotty Threads Carol Hart, Kika Hutchings & Carolyn Rory

History and RemembranceI am pleased to report that our website now contains copies of Coastlines newsletters covering the years from 2004 through De-cember 2011 in their entirety! I would like to thank everyone who has come forward to offer copies of the missing issues we were searching for. But there is still MORE exciting news!

Our very special thanks go to Nancy Bauere, one of our former historians — she brought me issues going back all the way through 1998! Not only that, but she had also been storing five thick binders of guild photos and other memorabilia — including ADDITIONAL newsletters going back as far as 1993. We have also found at least one issue from 1990!

Copies of all of these newsletters will eventually be accessible on our website for anyone wishing to do guild research or to learn more about our history. This may be especially helpful for those committees who may have incomplete records of their activi-ties. As you know, the newsletters record all of our quilt shows, community projects, Blocks of the Month, guest speakers and workshops, guild officers, committee activities and volunteers, and other special events. And there are lots of other interesting articles and quilting tips, too!

I have greatly enjoyed reading the older issues and recalling past activities, but more especially, in remembering those former members who are no longer with us and who volunteered many hours of assistance to our guild since its formal inception in 1988. Their selfless contributions deserve to be remembered with our gratitude — and this project will permanently memorialize their efforts.
