In the past few years, we have had some problems with large limbs breaking during ice or wind storms, which can be a hazard to pedestrians as well as nearby cars and property. In addition to the cul-de-sac islands, we will also be replacing old Bradford Pears in the medians on an as-needed basis as they die or become diseased. e new design that we are hoping to implement will incorporate a variety of long lasting shade trees with some flowering trees as well as perennials and grasses to round out the look. Our very old irrigation system will also be updated at this time, and the new method of watering will rely on drip irrigation and bubblers to prevent water waste and lower water bills. To spread the cost over a number of years, we will most likely tackle 2-3 islands per year for the next 4-6 years, and will determine this order by examining the current condition of the trees in each area and deciding which trees need replacement sooner than others. The DRNA and Master Association Boards are working with a landscape design company to revamp the cul-de-sac islands centered in twelve cul-de-sacs throughout the middle section of Davenport Ranch. We have moved beyond the concept phase and are currently deciding on a couple of design options to present to homeowners who live on these streets so that they may choose their favorite design. We expect this survey to be conducted by the end of the summer, and the winning designs to be installed sometime during the fall and winter.

Currently, the cul-de-sac islands are planted with Bradford Pears and either grass or Asian jasmine, which was the original planting by the developers 30+ years ago. Bradford Pears are beautiful flowering trees, but only have an expected lifespan of 20 years or so and become leggy and brittle beyond this time.

The new design that we are hoping to implement will incorporate a variety of long lasting shade trees with some flowering trees as well as perennials and grasses to round out the look.

We look forward to presenting the twelve streets with some design options in the upcoming months and seeing which designs prove most popular. After all, this is your neighborhood, and we want you to help determine the look and feel most meaningful to you.

Cul-de-Sac Islands are Getting a Makeover A Message from the DRNA

Board of DirectorsBlock Captain Initiative

Dear Neighbors,

One of the main purposes of a neighborhood association is to build and maintain a strong sense of community among its members.  We have an amazing and diverse neighborhood with unique needs and concerns.  In order to address the priorities of Davenport Ranch, a subcommittee of the DRNA Board has been created and is actively engaged on many levels to:

• increase communication between fellow homeowners and the Board• improve awareness regarding crime and safety• address emerging issues we face like traffic and development• host an increased amount of neighborhood events• foster a better community environment

One of the methods being implemented to achieve this is the important role of the “block captain”.  Several devoted neighbors do this now by actively communicating to their immediate neighbors regarding various issues.  We intend to re-engage those who have formerly served and those who are still serving in those roles and fill in the gaps where there are currently no captains available.  On behalf of the Board, I’d like to invite you to participate as we have a great need for volunteers, specifically block captains, but can we will find a suitable role for every individual based on availability and willingness to help.

Should you have any questions or ideas or want to discuss a further, please feel free to contact me.

Many thanks,

Davenport Homeowners,If you are looking for ways to stay in touch with the neighborhood

and the Board of Directors, please utilize the various communication efforts we have in place:

Website: The main source of formal communications with the management company and/or the Board or Directors is through our website, HYPERLINK "http://www.goodwintx.com" www.goodwintx.com, select “Davenport Ranch Neighborhood” from the drop-down menu. Think of this site as the place to go to conduct your business, such as paying assessments, applying for architectural approval, reading our FAQ, checking for notice of meetings, and getting in touch with our manager should you have questions. It is here that we also store neighborhood documents, such as CC&Rs, Bylaws, and Community Policies. Homeowners can also log in to the private section of this site to review personal and financial information.

Social Media: To utilize social media and deliver news quickly, the Davenport Ranch Neighborhood Association has joined both Facebook and Twitter. We encourage you to join the Facebook feed by searching “Davenport Ranch Neighborhood Association” and liking the page and encouraging your friends/neighbors to do the same. Additionally, you may find us on Twitter by searching the handle @AustinDRNA. We are going to be using this form of communication to alert homeowners to meetings (HOA meetings, Firewise), neighborhood goings on (such as construction or roadwork in the neighborhood), social events (the Halloween Party), and even emergency alerts and announcement (i.e. in the event of a wildfire, crime spree, etc). You are welcome to join and communicate with one another by adding pertinent news and information to the site when you see fit.

Nextdoor.com: Quite a few neighbors have signed up to use this website to keep in touch with on-goings around Davenport and even the City of Austin. Though the participation has nothing to do with our association or management company, this site has proved useful for anything from recommending contractors to finding lost pets.

Newsletters: We will also continue to use our newsletters, Peel as well as Life in Davenport. If you would like to contribute to the newsletter, you are welcome to contact the DRNA President, Mercedes Frost, at the email address listed in the contacts page.

Signage: This past year, we began posting signs at major intersections of the neighborhood to alert homeowners of ‘come-one, come-all’ events, such as parties, annuals meetings, city council town hall meetings, etc. They have been helpful to increase participation. Please take note when you see them, we love to see your smiling faces at events!

Email: And finally, the Board occasionally mails out a contacts request to build up our neighborhood email address list for email blasts as well as gather your opinions regarding useful forms of communication. Please be on the lookout for these mailers (oftentimes in the newsletters), and remember that all information is voluntarily submitted, and your participation would greatly facilitate the dissemination of information from the HOA and Goodwin Management. Don’t be left out!

Stay in Touch with Your Neighborhood – Here’s How

Cooking substitutions aid in calorie reduction

When looking to make permanent changes to a diet, consider using ingredient substitutions, said Roberta Anding, registered dietitian at BCM and Texas Children's Hospital.

Modifying the fat content in recipes gives the biggest calorie reduction, said Anding. Many times, applesauce can replace butter and oil in baking recipes, and Greek yogurt can replace sour cream.

Learning what substitutions work best does take some time and experimentation with cooking time and temperature, but reducing a diet by 100 calories per day can result in a 10-pound weight loss in one year, said Anding.

Other substitution options include switching to a low-fat cheese rather than a whole-fat cheese and switching from white bread and rice to wheat bread and brown rice. Not only is there a benefit in amounts of fiber, but also in magnesium, which can decrease the risk of type 2 diabetes.

"Don't look for extreme changes to your diet. Look for the common sense changes that you can make permanent," said Anding.

Hosting An Exchange StudentDid you ever wonder what hosting a foreign exchange

student is about? Well here it is in a nutshell….Hosting an exchange student is a great way to learn about

another country and culture without leaving your home town. It provides a cultural exchange experience for the entire family while providing a student from another country with a slice of American life.

Hosting an exchange student is like adding an international branch to your family tree. Many host families develop lifelong friendships with their exchange students and keep in regular touch with them. Some even visit them in their home countries, or invite them back for weddings and graduations

Hosting an exchange student provides your family, your high school and your community with a direct window into another country and culture, providing an opportunity for life-long learning.

Families of all shapes and sizes can host an international exchange student. We’ve had host families with young children, no children, high school aged children – as well as empty nesters and single parent households.

Ayusa is a non-profit based in San Francisco that promotes global learning and leadership through foreign exchange and study abroad programs for high school students from around the world.

For more information about hosting a high school foreign exchange student, please contact your local representative Vicki Odom at 832.455.7881 or [email protected] or Ayusa at 1.888.552.9872 or by visiting the website at www.ayusa.org.

DROWNING IS THE NUMBER ONE CAUSE OF ACCIDENTAL DEATH FOR CHILDREN UNDER FIVE, AND A LEADING CAUSE FOR CHILDREN AGES 1 - 14.

24 Texas children have already lost their lives to drowning in 2015

Cicadas are fairly large insects but can vary in size with some growing over 1 ½ inches. Color may also vary depending upon species, but many are brown or green. All cicadas have bulging eyes and, on adults, wings that are held roof-like over the body. The wings are semi-transparent with thick wing veins. The majority of their life cycle is spent underground.

Cicadas have 2-5 year life cycles and appear in Texas in mid to late summer. Females insert egg clusters into branches of trees using their saw-like ovipositor

(egg laying structure). Eggs hatch after about 6 weeks and small nymphs drop to the ground where they burrow into the soil. Nymphs feed on sap of tree roots with their piercing-sucking mouthparts. After becoming fully developed, nymphs emerge from the ground at night and climb onto nearby objects such as tree trunk, plants, fences, etc. Adult cicadas emerge from the last nymphal stage leaving behind the exuviae (cast skin). Adults can live 5-6 weeks.

Male cicadas are well known for their “song”. They rest on a tree and produce a whining sound to attract females. The sound is produced by two vibrating membranes on the side of the abdomen. Females do not “sing”. Adults feed on juices from tender twigs, but usually do not cause lasting harm to the plant from feeding.

Sometimes our patients have to split up their cosmetic treatment. This patient has had tetracycline staining on his teeth since he was a young child. He also had a “bad bite” which caused his muscles to “grind” through his teeth. He noticed his teeth getting shorter and shorter especially on his right side. By balancing out his bite, we were able to reestablish a better length for his teeth and best of all he doesn’t grind his teeth anymore. He plans to do his lowers sometime in the future, but for now he’s extremely happy and we are in a good place for him to wait for the right time to finish up his lower teeth.
