My renewal / study leave begins on Monday, January 14! I have a day at home to make final preparations and then I depart on Tuesday afternoon for India. I will be there for a little over three weeks, coming home in time to have a few days of rest before I return to work on February 11. I am, of course, very excited about this trip. I have wanted to visit India for some time, both to immerse myself in the culture and to experience a more Eastern understanding of Jesus and what being Christian looks like in such a multireligious part of the world. I have much to learn.

I confess to you that it is hard for me to be away for four weeks. I love my work. I love this church and all we are learning together. I hate to miss ANYTHING! I know lots of you feel the same way. This means that the time away may be something I, and you, need very much. I have no doubt that Hillview, with its loving spirit and fine leadership, will have no trouble while I am away. I am sure you have no doubt that I will do just fine traipsing around India on my personal adventure. It is good, however, for all of us to experience how true this is. We will have much to share when I return.

People have asked if I will be writing a blog or otherwise communicating while

I am in India. The answer is “No.” I will do my best to send a couple of

emails to the church office (as well as to family and friends), but I do not

intend to make regular comment on my travels. Claudia will have my itinerary

and, if it interests you, she can tell you where I am on any given day. I

welcome your prayers during this time. Please know that I will be holding all

of you in prayer as well.

Reminder: There will be no midweek Bible Studies while Pastor Barbara is on

leave. Bible Studies will resume on Tuesday, February 13.

Ongoing needs for Community Ministries Food Center include: peanut butter and

jelly, mac and cheese, tuna, rice, dry beans, diapers, formula, personal hygiene

items, bus passes, office supplies, and ziploc bags. Packages of hot dogs are

always welcome. Please leave in the church kitchen freezer with a note (for

CM) and a note saying "hot dogs in freezer" in the canned and dry food cabinet

in the Gathering Area. Two new ideas have been presented to our Faith in Action Committee: One, that we donate

cookware and tableware, or other kitchen items to CM. Two, that some of us who donate food

once a month, consider donating on the third Sunday of each month since Food Stamp recipients

often need assistance before the end of the month.

"Living Generously" is the theme of our 2013 stewardship campaign. I believe this is a description of Hillview. We are a living, active and functioning part of the family of God. We are also generous with each other and in support of others in need both locally, nationally and around the world in all their circumstances; hunger, disaster, homelessness ….

Merriam-Webster defines: Living: a: having life, b: active, functioning. Generous: a: characterized by a noble or forbearing spirit, b:

liberal in giving, c: marked by abundance or ample proportions.

The campaign will be taking place during the month of January. Throughout this month, we will be providing additional information about our needs (budget) and how those funds will be used. All of the things that Hillview accomplishes take money. Please prayerfully consider what you can do this year. You will be receiving pledge cards. On February 3, we will receive and consecrate your gifts to continue and expand our work for Christ. Curtis Kron Chair, Finance

Family Lenten Fair

All families are invited to participate in the Lenten Fair on Sunday, February 10 from Noon until 2 p.m. in Ballantyne Hall. We will be learning about the ways that God loves us, takes care of us, and counts the hairs on our heads each day during Lent as we explore the Lenten Devotional we will use this year.

There is a suggested $10 (per family) donation, with scholarships available, to cover the cost of lunch and supplies. Everyone is invited welcome to attend. Registration forms are available on the Christian Education bulletin board and in the Church Office. Contact Maggie Edmondson for more information or with questions.

General Unit Meeting—Saturday, January 12

“Poverty—Why Are Our Neighbors Hungry?” Church Library, 10 a.m.

Gayle Woods will be our guest speaker at the January 12, 2013, general unit meeting at 10 am. .in the church

library. Gayle will help us answer the question of why we have families in our Boise community who come to

our Community Meal in need of a meal, especially towards the end of the month. We must “study” and explore

the root causes of why people are hungry so that we can include in our “actions” not only mercy (such as the

Community Meal and dropping off food for Community Ministries) but ways to be advocates for justice for

those who are hungry. All ladies are invited! If child care is needed, please contact Judy, 327-0541, to make

arrangements.

Lydia Circle to Begin New Study—“Things I Wish Jesus Said” Lydia Circle will begin a new study Tuesday, Jan. 15, 9:30 to 11 a.m. in the church library. Pastor Barbara’s

book Things I Wish Jesus Said offers an opportunity for conversation in exploring and challenging your faith in a

supportive community. Lydia Circle meets twice a month, the first and third Tuesdays. Contact Judy Halverson,

327-0541, for more information.

“Drawing the Line”

Ladies, mark your calendar for the one-day retreat held at Hillview each year. Boundaries protect the special

identity God has given us. In this retreat, we will consider how and where to “draw the line”. It’s been nine

years since we’ve explored this topic about boundaries and it’s time to evaluate how we are doing in drawing the

line. Judy Halverson will be the facilitator.

Please Remember as You Shop
