Spiritual Security – 2 The first thing that we need to have spiritual secu-rity in Christ is faith. What is this faith? The word faith is used sometimes of the objective faith, the gospel. How-ever in this verse Peter talks about adding to “your faith.” This is the faith that we are to have in Christ and in God. Faith, as it is discussed in Hebrews is used of faith in God; in His promises. We can be sure of those things not seen because of our confidence in the One who tells us of them. Just as the physical eye allows us to see the physical things around us, so faith allows us to see spiritually those things that God has promised us. “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear” (Heb. 11:3). “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, pre-pared an ark to the saving of his house…” (Heb. 11:7). “These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth” (Heb. 11:13). The word faith is from the Greek word pistis. This was used primarily of “firm persuasion, a conviction based upon hearing. The word is used of trust.” F.F. Bruce said that the faith of those men and women “consisted simply in taking God at His word and direct-ing their lives accordingly.” They trusted God in what he told them and thus willingly followed His commands. Faith is necessary to please God. Again the writer of the letter to the Hebrews wrote of this saying, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” We have not seen God but we believe that He is and that He is the rewarder of all who diligently seek Him. How-ever, this faith is not a blind thing. It is based upon our trust in evidence we have been given and in the integrity of the One giving the evidence. Think of a trial in a court room and imagine that you are one of the jurors. You must listen to the testi-mony and weigh the evidence and then render a verdict – either guilty or not guilty. Your verdict will depend upon the kind of evidence given and the integrity of the witnesses. Some evidence may be overwhelming for or against the defendant. Fingerprints, DNA, tire tracks, shoe prints, clothing samples, hair all of that is physical evidence. What about eyewitnesses. Is the evidence reliable? Maybe the eyewitness has a reputation for ly-ing, for fabricating stories and is thus not reliable. Maybe there is doubt cast on the integrity of the one gathering the evidence. What we decide in the matter is dependent upon how much we are willing to trust those presenting the evidence.
