Reminder Regarding Applications for Special Provision for the QCS QCAA recognises that some students have a medical condition, impairment, or exceptional circumstances that may affect their access to the test or their demonstration of achievement in the test. QCAA attempts to minimise such barriers by making special provision available to these students. Schools approve special provision for school-based assessment. Special provision for the QCS Test, however, is approved by the QCAA.

Two types of special provision are available before the QCS Test: special arrangements and exemption. Special arrangements are practical adjustments to the test conditions, e.g. restbreaks, A3-size test materials, use of word processing software. Exemption allows a student to be absent from the test and retain their eligibility for an OP. Special provision does not affect OP eligibility or alter the method of OP calculation. There will be no record of special provision on the student’s Senior Statement, Statement of Results or Statement of Achievement. The school may submit an application on the student’s behalf. QCAA relies on the following information to help make fair, equitable and reasonable decisions: information provided by school staff about the impact of students’ impairments/circumstances medical or other independent documentation. Schools should make all students aware that special provision is available. Any student who believes they have a reason to apply for special provision may do so.

Page 3: Dates to remember MAY 2019 - stpats.qld.edu.au

Page | 3

A student may submit an application directly if they have a reason for not submitting their application through their school (e.g. if they have a medical condition they do not wish to disclose to school staff). In this case, the student or their parent/carer should phone (07) 3864 0227 for information and an application form. Documentation Applications are assessed using the supporting documentation provided. All documentation, including medical supporting documentation, must:

state the name or nature of the medical condition or impairment

describe how the student will be affected by the impairment at the time of the test

be provided by a suitably qualified person (as indicated in the relevant application categories) who is not related to

the student and who is not employed by the school.

Applications submitted without appropriate documentation are not likely to be approved. The closing date for applications to be submitted to the QCAA is Tuesday, 21 May 2019.

QCS Equipment Kit

A perennial issue that the College faces at the time of QCS is that there is an array of equipment that students are required

to bring for these exams. Experience has shown us that students do not: a) procure the right equipment; and b) bring the

appropriate equipment on the day. In order to remediate this issue, the College is providing an Equipment Kit at the price

of $15.00. We urge all parents to order by completing the attached Order Form at the end of this Newsletter.

Weekend Masses Rice House Day To foster more House spirit whilst acknowledging each of the House patrons, we will be celebrating ‘House’ days for each of the House groups of the College. Last week, on Friday 10 May, we celebrated Rice House day. Edmund Rice (1762-1844) was the Founder of the Christian Brothers order, of Ireland, an order of men whom dedicated themselves to the education of young men. Edmund Rice sought to improve the life opportunities of young men by providing access to an education, which may not have been available to them due to their lack of money. It was this order-

teaching brothers, who built a school in Mackay, the Christian Brothers College, which we now know as St Patrick’s College. One of the most surprising things Edmund Rice did for the young men of his school was to supply an education that would allow them to be active members of their society. All money raised from the day will be donated to support those who have less than others do. Diocesan Pilgrimage This weekend, students from all over the Rockhampton Diocese will gather at The Cathedral College, in Rockhampton, for the Annual Diocesan Youth Pilgrimage. The event this year will be under the theme ‘The Spirit Speaks: We Listen’, with students coming from Mackay, Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gladstone, Bundaberg and Emerald. The aim of the mini pilgrimage is to bring students from all over the Diocese together so that they build connections across the Diocese, with the hope of growth in future years. Approximately 200 students will join St Patrick’s College students, at The Cathedral College for the gathering. We get to line up for food, get involved in the fun activities organised by the NET (National Evangelisation Team) and sleep overnight. The students will have a great time meeting students from other schools, but the highlight would have to be the opportunity to meet Lucas Patchett and Nicholas Marchesi the founders of Orange Sky Laundry. Orange Sky Laundry Nick and Luke were the Young Australians of the Year for 2016, who were inspired by the social justice lessons in their classroom to go out a make a difference in the world. You can see their story at the following website: http://www.orangeskylaundry.com.au/ . It will be a privilege to listen to these two young gentlemen who have started something so beneficial for the community. Everybody present this weekend will come away after having enjoyed a wonderful experience. I hope we can use some of the ideas in the future, as we reflect upon the theme for the pilgrimage - The Spirit Speaks: We Listen.

NATIONAL RECONCILIATION WEEK

Monday 27 May – Monday 3 June is National Reconciliation Week. National

Reconciliation Week is a campaign held every year in Australia that works to

build stronger ties between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and

other Australians.

The Week is timed to coincide with two significant dates in Australia’s history, which provide strong

symbols of our hopes and aims for reconciliation:

May 27 — this day marks the anniversary of Australia’s most successful referendum and a defining event in our nation’s

history. The 1967 referendum saw over 90 per cent of Australians vote to give the Commonwealth the power to make

laws for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and recognise them in our national census.

3 June — Commemorates the High Court of Australia’s landmark Mabo decision in 1992, which legally recognised that

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have a special relationship to the land—a relationship that existed prior to

colonisation and still exists today. This recognition paved the way for land rights or Native Title.

The 2019 theme for NRW is ‘Grounded in Truth; Walk together with Courage’

To foster positive race relations, the relationship between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and the broader

community must be grounded in truth. Whether you’re engaging in challenging conversations or unlearning and

relearning what you know, this journey requires all of us to walk together with courage. Let us pray for Reconciliation:

Creator God, we pray for this land, its ancient culture, customs, languages and its people.

Gather us together to look after one another, as we build our own stories

that will be passed down for all future generations.

Give us our grace, to be united in one mind, one heart,

and in one action so that we can continue the journey of reconciliation.

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,

Amen.

Reef Guardians- Barbeque Clean Up The Reef Guardians group recently undertook a clean up of the city area surrounding the College. About forty students and staff were involved and they helped by cleaning the gardens and streets. Students were able to see what types of rubbish were most commonly left behind in the community and this included items such as cigarette butts, bottles and cans. In the forty-five minutes of collection, the College helpers were able to collect approximately ten sacks full of rubbish.

After the clean up, students enjoyed a barbeque breakfast. This was an initiative created by the Reef

Guardians group to not only help clean our local area of potential pollutants for the Pioneer River, but also to help foster

community spirit.

Once again, St Patrick’s College Mackay students participated in the annual “invitation only” Bond University National High School Mooting Competition. Six of our Year 11 Legal Studies students flew down to Bond University on the Gold Coast with Legal Studies teachers Shaun Spada and Kylie Bowman. The students involved were Felicity Allen, Riarna Crofton, Alice Pattemore, Hannah Ruggeri, Mackenzie Towers and Shellynah Willacy. After preparing convincing legal arguments, both teams competed against other Secondary School teams in a Moot Court in front of two judges. The students represented themselves and the College with grace and honour. Well done.

QUT Internship

The QUT STEM Internship Program, aims to introduce passionate high school students to real world

research as a possible career pathway, as well as give an insight into University life. Over the internship,

50 students from across Queensland worked in a variety of STEM fields.

My group dealt with issues from a broad range of STEM disciplines, completing interdisciplinary research

that would hopefully assist in ‘Solving Tomorrow’s Problems Today’. Along with our work in the laboratory, we also

participated in leadership workshops where we learnt the skills required in today’s workplace.

We also attended a breakfast where we were given the opportunity to network with industry professionals and alumni.

For me, this experience was second to none, as it introduced me to some of the real-life issue’s which researchers are

currently dealing with. It also confirmed my career goals and assisted me by showing what university life is like. After this

week, I am more passionate than ever about the STEM field and would highly recommend the program to any Year 11

students who too have an interest in the STEM fields.

Mackay and District Secondary Schools (MDSS) Cross Country

On Tuesday 30 April, ten St Patrick’s College students attended the Mackay District Cross Country trials.

The event was originally going to be held at Harrup Park Country Club, however, the venue had to

change to the Mackay Soccer fields due to the wet conditions.

A walk of the track ensured that the 17 year girls and boys, understood where to run in a rather complex

formation. Courtney Trace, Olivia McCowan, Layla Sanders and Dana Hallinan lined up as they were the

first to run the four kilometre race. The pace was set right from the start, with the lead runners setting off hard and fast.

Running on grass isn’t fun at the best of times and with the pace set, the girls were off. With the first six places going

through, Layla Sanders and Dana Hallinan crossed the line in fourth and fifth place. These placings earned the girls their

selection into the Mackay and District Cross Country team.

Courtney and Olivia just missed out, coming across the line in ninth and eleventh place. Five minutes after

the girls had started, Mackenzie Novosel, Callum Whitaker and Corey Shepherd were off and racing the

six kilometres. As the gun fired, the St Pat’s boys set the pace and all boys earnt the coveted position in

the Mackay and District team. Callum took out second place, Corey third and Mackenzie coming across

the line in sixth place.

Page 8: Dates to remember MAY 2019 - stpats.qld.edu.au

Page | 8

After a lunch break and a number of junior students running, the next to line up

were the 16 year students. The first to run this time were the boys. Harrison

Kelly and Jackson Chapman were keen to make a start with conditions turning

cold. Holy Spirit College student Hunter set a cracking pace which the others

tried to match. Jackson crossed the line in fifth place, earning his place in the

MDSS team. Harrison narrowly missed out coming in ninth place. The final

student to run was Hayley Said who also made the MDSS team, coming home

in second place. It was a great event and congratulations must be given to all

the students who attended.

FunMUN – UN Youth Queensland

It's Model UN, with a twist! FunMUN sees students from Years 9 -12 taking on the role of United

Nations countries in a Model-UN format. It's like debating, but in the format of a real international

committee.

But, instead of debating the harsh complexities of water shortages in developing nations, or the

sobering challenges surrounding child soldiers, students will be involved in more light-hearted resolutions. How do we

control meme control? What if superheroes were real? Are cats really better than dogs? Is 'Fortnite'TM an epidemic?

This puts the emphasis on students enjoying their time in MUN chambers and developing their skills in an environment

where they aren’t literally being judged. Students will represent a country by themselves, rather than in pairs like with

our Evatt Trophy Competition.

FunMUN is a fantastic opportunity for students to develop diplomacy and negotiation

skills, without the pressure of a competitive environment. Above all else, FunMUN is

designed for students with varying interests, experiences and abilities. No previous

knowledge of international affairs, or MUN debating, is required. So what are you

waiting for?

For questions regarding any of the Townsville FunMUN rounds, please contact the

North Queensland Convenor, Maneet Hora, at [email protected] For

more information, check out our website here.

On Wednesday 24 March, the Year 11 Aerospace Studies class was pleased to

welcome an ex-St Patrick’s College student from 2011/2012, Zacharie Wright-Hansen.

Zacharie is a proud member of the Royal Australian Navy.

Zacharie came to give a talk to the class about the recruitment process and job

opportunities specifically in the Navy, but also in the other armed services. The class

got some great first-hand insight into his career of Avionics Technician (which in his

terms was an auto-electrician for Navy ships). Thank you Zacharie.

St Patrick’s College Cultural Ensemble, Music, Art, Drama and Film, TV and New Media students are invited to attend the 2019 Cultural tour. The proposed destination is Melbourne to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Princess Theatre, as well as to engage in Drama workshops and witness the rich culture that Melbourne has to offer. The tour will take place in Term 3, from Thursday 22 August – Sunday 25 August. The proposed cost is estimated to be $1700 per student. This includes all breakfast, workshops, hotel accommodation, airfares and performance tickets. Students will also need spending money for lunch, dinner and shopping, however this is subject to change. We believe our students will benefit from this opportunity, to witness professional performances as well as gain insight into pursuing a career in the Arts through professional workshops. A reminder to those students who have not yet paid their ensemble fees (for Percussion, Choir, Handbells, Dance squad/Rock pop and Stage Band) you are encouraged to do so as quickly as possible. This form was handed out to students at the beginning of Term One and may have been misplaced. For any questions or queries on the tour, please do not hesitate to make contact by email address to [email protected].

Leukaemia Foundation Mackay Marina Fun Run Every year the Leukaemia Foundation Mackay Marina Fun Run Committee ask for any interested student volunteers to assist with the setting up and manning of water stops at this worthwhile event. St Patrick’s College students are encouraged to participate in community volunteering. This event will be held on Sunday 2 June 2019 from approximately 5:00 am until 8:30 am. Participating students will be able to use this activity on their references as Community involvement. If you wish to volunteer, please register your interest at the College Reception. An enjoyable morning is guaranteed for all involved.
