Dear Families Last Friday was a very exciting day for everyone at Wanguri Primary School. We all celebrated World Teachers Day as well as a day which focused on Child Safety Awareness. Day for Daniel is in it’s sixth year and continues to grow on a National scale being recognised as Australia’s largest participation event of its type. Andris Bergs, Council Chairperson, reports “Wanguri Primary School Council held its second annual planning session last week. Deb Hall facilitated a lively meeting of parents, teachers and other staff who reflected on the achievements and challenges of 2010 and set some priorities for 2011. The good ideas included: Building on what the SRC has done in 2010 by having more contact with the Council and school leadership team in 2011. Making stronger connections between the parents, community and school in 2011 by adding to this newsletter, school assemblies and other events. I'd like to thank everyone who helped make it such a productive and enjoyable evening.” Early in 2007 the School Council engaged the community in further developing the identity of the school. Recognising the many different cultures and the richness this brings we sought to involve the traditional owners of Darwin and North East Arnhem Land. Both peoples are known as Salt Water People - having a strong relationship with the ocean. Hence, the choice of a barramundi artefact. The Larrakia and Wangurri Peoples shared in a Welcome to Country celebration later that year. This event was highly successful, allowing our students to continue a relationship via the internet. Techy Mesaro, community artist has been working with the school, traditional owners and business sponsors. We are now nearing the end of this project. The next step is for the artist to apply glass tiles. Every student will have an opportunity to contribute. The concept is for our community to honour all cultures through the use of a mosaic design, representing the colours of the world flags. We believe every child and their family has a place in our community. Ms Leah Crockford is working with students across the school to build their understandings and connections of the school identity. This is one way we can celebrate a living welcome, Welcome to Country—Connecting Our Community. is Fun!

.

“It was fun doing cartoons indoors at school. We got to do what we wanted to our cartoon. Mr Joffa was really fun to work with and really funny and we were lucky to have him as our teacher for a while. I learned that everyone in the world can do cartoons!!”

“The class in 2/3 Morgan have counted 16,900 vouchers so far and we are still counting. We are counting in ten’s, then we are making hundred’s out of them. We’ve been working as a group and having fun while we do it. We bet we will get the sports gear for our school “

A fun, healthy snack!

Why not bring your own apple to school on Tuesdays and have them slinkied for free at recess? I will be ‘parked’

near the canteen with the slinky machine at recess on Tuesdays and would love to get to know more students over

a healthy snack.

I would also love some help to make colourful posters to remind everyone to BYO apple on Tuesdays. Why not join

me in the library next Tuesday at lunch to help make some posters for your classroom?
