President’s Corner, by Randy Ridgway

WOW! It’s November already and it’s time to get serious about ski season. Are you and your equipment ready? Mel Crichton has some tips for you in this issue. Be sure to get Mel’s take on what you need to make your ski season a fun and safe one. Our Next Meeting: There is no club meeting in November, but plan to attend the Ski Club Christmas Party at Hillcrest Country Club on December 7. This event has become a ski club tradition and it’s not to be missed. We’d like to meet your spouse, too! So, if your significant other is not a skier, this is the perfect opportuni-ty to bring them along, introduce him or her to your ski friends, and enjoy a fantastic holiday meal. There is a cash bar, a great meal, and

we’ll have dancing after dinner. If you have some favorite dance tunes, be sure to e-mail your requests to Dena Aleksa at [email protected] Since this is such a dressy affair, there’ll be Corsages for the first forty gals who attend. Don’t miss this fun evening. Thanks go to Ray Battey for help-ing us set up this site for our meeting. Dinner cost is only $ 10 for member and $ 15 for non-members. Don’t forget to bring canned goods for our dona-tion to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul food bank. Michigan Trips: Due to the lack of interest and low sign-up, we’ve had to cancel the Schuss Mountain New Year’s weekend ski trip and also the Caber-fae weekend trip that was scheduled for late February. The Indiana Ski Council weekend trip is still a “GO” for February 9, 10, and 11. Trip Openings: There are still a few openings on some of our Western ski trips. Check out Lisa Rayhon’s article elsewhere is this issue for news about which Western ski trips still have openings. Contact the trip leader to sign up for the trip you’re interested in. Thanks: This month I want to recognize Marilyn Rader, our Vice President of Member Services , for the outstanding job she does for the club. There’s a lot of time consuming work to be done to keep our membership roster current. She also handles getting the Schussboomer issue mailed out to those of you who do not receive it by e-mail. Marilyn was my contact to join the ski club back in the fall of 1990. She told me the club met at the Murat, which I thought she said Marrott. Eventually, I figured it out and the rest is history.

Marilyn also got those neat checkered ban-danas for us last season. And, Marilyn met

her husband, Richard through the ski club. Be sure to thank Marilyn her all her work.

More from the president

Social Chair: Dena Aleksa has agreed to serve as Social Chair for the club. Dena will be assisting with the entertainment at the Christmas Party by get-ting our dance tunes set up. She will also be planning our Thursday Thirst lo-cations and dates for after the first of the year. And, with Dena’s creativity, there might be a couple new social ideas for next year. Thanks Dena! 60th Anniversary: Yes, our Indianapolis Ski Club was founded in 1958. Sounds like a good reason to celebrate! We’ll be planning for a special event in early to mid-June next year. If you have a suggestion for a location for the event, I’d like to hear about it. And, if you’d like to help with the event itself, we’re accepting volunteers. Contact me at [email protected]

November/December 2017 Trips Status

By: Lisa Rayhons, Trips VP

Greetings!! May the cold mornings have you excit-ed for the upcoming ski season! Trip sign-ups have gone very well for the upcoming ski season, and it was great to see some of you at the Sun Val-

ley Sports open house. To date, we have sold over 180 spaces. We were able to accommodate many skiers on the highly popular Big Sky trip, which is our 1st trip of the

season, led by Priscilla Johnson. We are getting close to canceling unused spaces on Sun Valley, so contact Carolyn McConkey NOW! South Lake Tahoe has two open spaces—one male, one female, or two fe-males...please contact Debbie Hoffer to reserve your spot.

Our last trip of the season is Aspen, and if you haven't signed up for a trip yet, it's not too late to check with Jean Ballinger. There are a few open-

ings. The main call-out is to fill 2 spaces on the Austria trip—PLEASE contact

RANDY RIDGWAY TODAY!! And, don’t fret if a specific trip is currently full...cancellations happen quite often, so

get yourself on the wait list.

2018 Michigan Trips Status As the saying goes, you won’t know unless you try! So, we tried/advertised 2 sepa-rate trips to Michigan, but in the end, had to cancel because of very low sign-ups. However, the Indiana Ski Council Race weekend (Feb 9-11, 2018) is a GO!! Look for details in the flier in the Boomer (or contact me if questions), and contact Stan Mason to reserve your space. It will be a fun weekend at Schuss Mountain, with other ski clubs from the Indiana/Chicagoland area.

View from the Sky…. By Mel Crichton in Big Sky MT

Summer in the mountains has drawn to a close. The photo was taken on September 16th… still summer. But as usual in fall, it melted quickly, and the next day I mowed my lawn one last time before returning to Indy. But fall snows portend the coming winter…. And that means skiing!

Last fall I made the mistake of scheduling hernia surgery in October… meaning I could not do strenuous exercise for weeks after - no bike riding, no kayaking, no long hikes, nothing that would help build those ski muscles. Once I got on the snow in December, it took a month to get my ski legs back. That meant short ski days when our early season snows were plentiful.

That’ll be different this year (I hope). If you are able to exer-cise, now Is the time to pour it on. Elsewhere in this issue are some hints for toning the body. OK, you got the body in shape. How about your ski gear?

Boots. Without a doubt your most important piece of equipment, because if your feet are not comfortable, you won’t be… and your skiing will suck. Dig ‘em out of the back of the closet and wear them around the house for a few hours. Remember where all those pinch points were last year? Take them to a good boot fitter and get them fixed, or, if there’s a lot of days on the boots or they don’t match your new outfit, replace them. I recently bought new Dalbellos, replacing my comfy Langes that had almost a thousand days on them, and was amazed at how good my hard-to-fit feet felt, right out of the store.

Skis. While the ski shops are not yet busy, get those skis tuned! It’s time to fill and grind the bottoms, sharpen the edges, and apply a good cold wax for early season skiing. If you are still on 205 cm straight skis, consider a new pair of 170 cm mid-fats. I have two pairs* of 175 cm Atomics with a 95 mm waist, and they ski fast and easy in all terrain, even deep powder and on ice. Read the SKI mag reviews, and look for a ski that matches your style… or the style you want to have. (*why 2 pairs? I love ‘em!)

Clothing. The pre-season sales are on. Maybe you found a new jacket at the Sun Valley meeting. But be sure your clothing is clean, rips are sewed (no duct tape!! That’s for lo-cals), and zippers work. After washing, you can restore waterproofing with Nikwax, availa-ble online. And one last thing…...

Liver - Many of us use a ski trip as an excuse to abuse the liver, drinking way too much après ski. Booze works faster the higher you are in elevation, so take it easy the first few days of the trip.. Drink lots of water, especially on day one, and don’t try to ski on the day you arrive. Acclimate!

Cathy and I look forward to seeing the Indy club at Big Sky in January. But wherever you

ski, try to get your gear and yourself in shape so you can enjoy the mountains to the fullest. Think snow!

Biking with the Ski Club By Ray Battey

We continue to get good participation on the Club’s bike rides. General-ly we ride the Monon north or south but occasionally we ride Fishers bike trails, the Nickle Plate Trail or, our favorite, the Cardinal Greenway. Our club has gotten so much use out of the Cardinal Greenway that we decided to donate $200 from our Ski Club Charity account to the Cardi-nal Greenway Foundation. The accompanying picture shows Treasurer Jackie Sundboom presenting our check to a representative of the Cardi-nal Greenways, outside their headquarters, The Depot, in Muncie. The other picture shows three of our riders wearing their Cardinal Green-ways bike shirts. Our season is winding down, but we hope to start up in the spring with a couple of very easy rides.

This was a great biking season and I’m going to miss our fun rides. Huge thank you to Ray for all he does to keep us on our bikes! See all on the

slopes! From Noli Bentlley

Want to increase your fun factor on your next ski vacation. As Mel said “exercise”. Start-ing a consistent snow sport exercise program 2 to 3 times a week increases balance and endurance. Even skiing groomed runs ,your body is in constant movement trying to maintain balance.

A few simple things that take very little time. Standing on one foot when ever possible, like when you are brushing your teeth. Leave a little time to take the stairs. Try walking up sideways, switch sides at each landing, and double steps. If you like to walk ,ad in some sideways, sambas, and lunges.

Four Exercises to improve balance for the upcoming ski season

The BOSU ball is an effective tool for training both static and dynamic balance, as well as training motor skills. When training on unstable surface, the core automatically fires and contracts to keep the body upright. The following exercises will help you improve your balance and core strength for the ski season. These exercises can first be done on the floor and then progress to the BOSU ball or other unstable surface. Shin Balance Position yourself with shins on top of the BOSU ball or floor ,with a neutral spine. [ kneel-ing] Place the toes on the ground and keep hand down by your side next to your thighs; hold this position for a ten count; progress to a longer count as you become more stable. To progress the exercise. Lift toes off the ground, close eyes or catch a ball. Static Awareness Balance Stand upright on the dome of the BOSU ball with feet hip with apart, arms to your side. Progression. Close 1 or both eyes or try to left 1 leg at a time off the ball or floor. Hold for a 10 count and progress as you become more stable. Standing Abduction Toe Taps Stand upright on the dome of the BOSU ball with hip with apart. Place the arms into an athletic position. [ Hands in front with elbows bent]. Lift the right foot off the dome or floor and tap the foot on the side of the dome or floor. Return to center and repeat with left foot. To progress. Place the foot on the floor next to the dome and lower into a slight squat. Alternating 5-10 times on each leg. Static Lunges Position yourself with the right foot on the dome of the ball or floor in an upright scissor position. [ The arch of the foot should be on the center of the ‘bullet point’ of the ball] Keep hands on hips or in the athletic position. Lift the heel of the left foot and lower the left knee into a lunge position. Complete a set on the left leg and then switch the right. Alternating 5-10 times on each leg

More fitness tips YouTube is a great resource for snow sports exercises. Three programs that I liked. 1– The only ski exercises you’ll ever need. 2- 4 ski exercises to get you pumped for snow. 3- Ski prep exercises with BOSU ball. You can look on you tube on how to do these exercises . Clock lunges. They hit the glutes and quads in all directions. They help strengthen those little muscles around the hips that turn your legs and help keep your skis parallel and under your body.

Sliding devices. [sock, towels on hard surfaces ,hard plastic on carpet] great for non impact leg work outs.

Stairs. A more dynamic work out to help with crud, powder, bumps and fatigue at the end of the day. Stairs are very low impact when going up and walking down. Great for old worn out knees and hips.

A strong core is important keeping your upper body over your feet and not behind them, witch creates a stable stance in motion= balance. Regular and side planks, and some rotational exercises. Being flexible helps with absorbing and flexing, turning, walking in the snow, and even getting on and off the chair. Pilates, stretching or any type of mobility exercise espe-cially hips, lower back, glute and legs If you haven’t exercised for awhile it would be recommended to see your Doctor to

make sure okay to go . Red Rocks Amphitheater Great place to work out

Randy wanted me to put together some cool things you and you friends would like to do. I went to Visit Indy there are so many things going on in Indy I couldn't pick out a few events over so many. All I can do is recommend to check Visit Indy out If there is an event you might think the club members would enjoy email me or Dena Aleksa and I’ll put it in the January’s Boomer.
