F. Read the text.

Life in the 1950s

People in the 1950s had very different lives than we do today. The nuclear family was the norm; father, mother, and children. It was less common for women to work. Many stayed home and took care of their children while their husbands went to work. Homes were also very different from the ones today. They didn’t have all the modern appliances and devices we have today. For example, there weren’t any microwaves, electric can openers, or automatic dishwashers, and there weren’t any freezers so food had to be bought daily.

Before most homes had TVs, families spent their evenings listening to the radio, playing board games, or just sitting in the living room talking. If a family had a TV, the whole family watched the same show. Why? There was only one TV in the house. Could the kids run to their bedrooms and talk on the phone? No. Why? There was only one phone in the house.

Children in those days visited their friends’ houses or went outside to play. If you were a little older, you went to a soda shop or a diner after school to hang out. There were no malls, no computers, no Internet, no stereos, no videogames, and certainly no cell phones or texting. Life was much simpler!
