Fault locator (FL)

The fault locator processes the information gathered on each fault and calculates the distance to the fault location in Km. The necessary parameters for the distance calculation algorithm to work are the following:

Breaker status

The breaker status is determined considering the status of the digital inputs and the comparison of the phase current and the breaker failure function pick-up levels.

The breaker status is used as an input signal in various functions, such as: switch-onto-fault, power swings, fuse failure, broken conductor, load encroachment, etc.

Pole discrepancy

Provides a non-reclosable three-phase trip when any status differing from the others is detected during a time lap set.

Breaker monitoring

An event is generated when a phase’s kI2 meter exceeds the programmed threshold.

Excessive number of trips

This function produces an event and a control signal when a number of trips per phase higher to the number programmed in the pre-set time lapse is produced. It blocks the reclosing cycle when the set value is exceeded.

Monitoring of breaker and closing circuits

Detects failures in the circuits, both with the breaker open and with the breaker closed.

Breaker operation logic

The opening and closure failure time settings determine the time lapse between the issue of the corresponding order and the reception of the breaker’s activity signal, on the understanding that the breaker has acted correctly.
