Who would have believed it’s possible?

At an altitude of 2500 meters, on the summit of a mountain, in breathtaking surroundings, we get to welcome glass-blowers from all over the world.

The original plan was a joint symposium of the Glassblowers’ Association Switzerland (GVS) and the German Glassblo-wers’ Society (VDG) on top of Mount Säntis.

We never considered that this could turn into an international symposium. Neither the GVS, nor the VDG initiated this. No, the international community of glassblowers did it independently.

We are very happy about this, because it shows that glassblowers are citizens of the world. They have their own langu-age that each of us understands. This language is hot, hard, and sometimes soft like honey:

GLASS !

And we use this language to understand each other, to share our enthusiasm, to learn, and to teach.

We are especially thrilled with the high number of young people attending this symposium. It shows that our profession is alive, that it is developing and has a great future.

We will educate ourselves in lectures, workshops, and the exhibition, and share our enjoyment of our profession through free-style work. Private conversations in smaller groups are just as important as the scheduled agenda items. We hope that there is enough room for these conversations, because that is where we build friendships and find com-mon ground, which is worth more than all the money in the world.

We would like to thank the two Swiss companies that opened their doors to us. They spared no efforts to enable glass-blowers from all over the world to visit them.

We would also like to thank all the other companies that supported us with tools, glass, gas, logistics, and general goodwill.

Last but not least, we address those people who prepared this symposium. We thank all of you sincerely.

We hope you enjoy this symposium, and wish you interesting experiences, great conversations, and impressive encoun-ters.

Hermann Büchi Peter Schweifel President Chairman
