February 9, 2012 Dear Colleague: We are pleased to present to you the Office of Sponsored Projects Annual Report for the Fiscal Year 2011. It documents Dartmouth’s outstanding ability to attract external support for research and other sponsored programs year after year. Fiscal Year 2011 saw an increase in dollars received, once the impact of a decrease in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) is removed. Our Executive Summary illustrates, in text and graphs, the most salient features of Sponsored Research performance at Dartmouth College in Fiscal Year 2011. In the executive summary, you will see the impact of ARRA and the Federal Direct Student Loan (FDSL) program, as well as information regarding total awards received, our yearly percentage growth in awards, sources of awards, the dollar value and count of proposals submitted over the last 5 years, and our total expenses. This summary should provide a useful overview of our performance, while succeeding sections provide greater detail. Following the Executive Summary, Section 1 provides a summary and analysis of awards and proposals. This section provides breakdowns of awards and proposals by major organizational unit and program as well as by source. Sections 2 through 9 provide summary information for each school, office, or program that administered awards and proposals. These sections also contain details on awards received, listing the:
• School (or other major organizational unit) • Department or program • Name of the principal or co-investigator • Sponsoring agency • Type of agency: Federal Government; State & Local Government; Foundation; Corporation; Private or Public
Educational Institution; Private Institution; Professional/Technical Organization; Foreign Corporation • Total award dollar value (listed for Principal Investigator only) • Title of project
The supplement to the College Financial Report, Section 10, provides a summary of our grant and contract expenditures. The Fiscal Year 2011 Annual Report does not include proposal or expenditure detail by school, office or department. Anyone needing this information for their department should contact the Office of Sponsored Projects at 603-646-3007. As in the past, this report contains information on corporate and industry activity that is defined as support for research and not corporate philanthropy. Therefore, these totals represent sponsored activities and do not include most of the funds generated and reported by the Development Office. This report also does not generally include grants made directly to individual faculty. If you have any questions or comments please call me at 603-646-3007.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This year Dartmouth College experienced a decrease in sponsored research funding; a decrease of 12% in awards and a decrease of 24% in proposals. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) accounts for 7.2% of our awards and the Federal Direct Student Loan (FDSL) program accounts for 8.0% of our awards in FY 2011. Excluding the impact of ARRA and FDSL, awards increased by 1.2% compared to 2010. . Figure 1 illustrates the overall impact of these federal funds on an otherwise modest annual increase.
Figure 2 shows a five year comparison of awards, proposals and expenses for Dartmouth College. It should be noted that ARRA resulted in an increase in proposal submission in FY 2009 and 2010.

*Note: The treatment of proposal data changed with the adoption of the Coeus grant management system in 9/2006, which more consistently represents the total value of multi-year proposals than has been the case in the past. Data prior to 1994, however, are too unreliable to recalculate the proposal totals used for those fiscal years.
