Growth means change and change involves risk, stepping from the

    known to unknown

    "We grow great by dreams.

All big men are dreamers. They

see things in the soft haze of a

spring day or in the red fire of a

    long winter's evening.

Some of us let these great dreams

die, but others nourish and protect

    them; nurse them through bad

days till they bring them to the

    sunshine and light which comes

    always to those who sincerely

hope that their dreams will come

    true."

    DARE TO DREAM

A dream is based on your reality, your strengths

    and your weaknesses...

If your dream was above the ground then justmake the foundations to make it concrete, a reality.

    I'm here aren't I?- I said to myself.

I swam the race of my life. I wasn't placed

anywhere, but just to be here was my dream. People

often thought that I couldn't do it and I wouldn't

do it. So when I got here, the best feeling I had was

when I figured out that "I was good enough, not

only because I made the qualifying time but

    mainly because I never gave up;

I gave my dream a shot.

An aim, a dream, a focus; never think you have set

    your goals too high.

You will just have the bigger challenge of

    achieving it.

Pudgy and shy, Ben Saunders was the last kid in his class picked for any sports

team. Football, hockey, tennis, cricket anything with a round ball, I was

useless, he says now with a laugh. But back then he was the object of jokes

and ridicule in school gym classes in Englands rural Devon County.

It was a mountain bike he received for his 15th birthday that changed him. At

first the teen went biking alone in a nearby forest. Then he began to pedal

along with a runner friend. Gradually, Saunders set his mind on building up

his body, increasing his speed, strength and endurance. At age 18, he ran his

    first marathon.

The following year, he met John Ridgway, who became famous in the 1960s

for rowing an open boat across the Atlantic Ocean. Saunders was hired as an

instructor at Ridgways School of Adventure in Scotland, where he learned

about the older mans cold water exploits. Intrigued, Saunders read all he

could about Arctic explorers and North Pole expeditions, then decided that

    this would be his future.

Treks to the Pole arent the usual holidays for British country boys, and those

who didnt dismiss his dream as fantasy probably doubted he had what it

takes. John Ridgway was one of the few people who didnt say, Youre com-

    pletely nuts, Saunders says.

In 2001, after becoming a proficient skier, Saunders embarked on his first

long-distance expedition toward the North Pole. It took incredible stamina.

He suffered frostbite, had a close encounter with a polar bear and pushed his

body to the limit, hauling his supply-laden sledge up and over jagged iceridges.

Saunders has since become the youngest person to ski solo to the North Pole,

and hes skied more of the Arctic by himself than any other Briton. His old

playmates would not believe the transformation.

This October, Saunders, 27, heads south to trek from the coast of Antarctica

to the South Pole and back, an 1,800-mile journey that has never been

    completed on skis.

All great journeys start with a dream

We all have dreams. Usually while were asleep. Such dreams could be more hurtful than helpful. For

example, imagine dreaming youre eating shredded wheat, only to wake up and find half the mattress

gone! Well, Im not talking about that type of dream. Rather, Im thinking about ones vision,

aspiration, or fervent hope for the future. Our dream is the song of our soul. Life without one is

reduced to a hollow existence. But life with a dream is filled with meaning and purpose.

Besides being the drummer and chief lyricist for the rock band "Rush," Neil Peart is also an authorand philosopher. Look at how beautifully he expresses the relationship between life and a dream: "Life

is just a candle and a dream must give it flame." Richard M. DeVos, the founder of Amway Corp., also

writes about the flame of hope: "No life is more tragic than that of the individual who nurses a dream, an

ambition, always wishing and hoping, but never giving it a chance to happen. He nurses the flickering dream, but

never lets it break out into flame."

Neil Peart & Richard M. DeVos, recognized that life is a journey. To get from where they were to

where they wanted to be, they followed their dream. What distinguishes them from those who stand

on the sidelines is their understanding that the only limitations we face are those of our own creation,

or those we allow others to place in our mind. Once we follow our dream, our life changes; we are

transformed. For as baseball pitcher Satchel Paige (1906 ~ 1982) said, "Ain't no man can avoid being

average, but there ain't no man got to be common." No, we dont have to be common, we can change

all that by following our dream.

Most of us have a dream, aspiration, or hearts desire. But the trouble is most of us have the on/off

switch of our dream set to OFF. Whenever we say, "I cant," we set the switch to OFF. Whenever we

believe we can, we set the switch to ON. Simple, isnt it? Just because I believe I can do something

doesnt mean there wont be any problems. But once I believe I can do it, I will seek solutions for

every problem I stumble on. And since it is a law of life that we find what we look for, if I look for

    solutions, I will find them.

Any worthy dream is a dream worthy of accomplishing. Once I realize I can do it, the next step is tomake a commitment. As soon as we make a commitment, great power is released. What seemingly

were insurmountable hurdles are now reduced to obstacles of laughable insignificance. But we wont

reach this stage until we decide to stop talking and start acting. Unless we commit ourselves, self-

doubt will ferment and block our way.

Our dreams dont have to be grand to be great. We dont have to become the worlds greatest

pianist, an Olympic medal winner, or an internationally acclaimed superstar. An aunt of mine sold

gloves in a department store for most of her life. Her dream was to be the friendliest and

most helpful salesperson around. Year after year, the same customers would return and

deliberately seek her out. She brightened everyones day and touched the lives of thousands.

Was her dream any l ess significant than that of a prominent person? Of course not. We allhave the power to follow a dream that will make a difference to us and those we meet.

"If you want your life to

change, you have to change. If

you keep doing the samethings, in the same way, you

will get the same results, and

youll have the same life that

    you have now."

    To achieve all that is

    possible, we must attempt the

    impossible.

To be all we can be, we must

    dream of being more.

To reach our dream, we must

reach out to others. John C.

What do we say to those

    who are in impossible circumstances

What do we say to those who are in impossible

circumstances, locked behind prison bars? They may be

stripped of their dignity and freedom, but they are notstripped of power. They can still dream. Yes, they have

made mistakes, but starting from today, they can make the

world a better place by making themselves better people. It

is not an impossible dream, and it is a great dream, one

    worthy of following.

Before our dreams can come true, dont we have to dream?

Isnt there a good reason for dreaming? After all, how can

we travel any further than our dream? How can we become

any greater than our dream? Author of "As a Man

Thinketh," James Allen (1864 ~ 1912) expressed the same

idea, "Dream lofty dreams, and as you dream, so shall you

become. Your vision is the promise of what you shall one

day be; your ideal is the prophecy of what you shall at last

    unveil.

Another law of life is we are never given a dream unless we have the power to realize it. But that doesnt mean we dont have to work at it. So, althoughwe want to dream, we dont want to oversleep. When we dream during our sleep, our mind both creates and experiences the dream . Similarly, when

awake, we create our dream, and if we follow it, we will experience it. In other words, if we create and follow our dream, it will create us.

No dreamer is too small; no dream is too big, so hold on to your dream. Poet Langston Hughes (1902 ~ 1967) tells why, "Hold fast to dreams, for if

dreams die, life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly." Even the cartoon character Jiminy Cricket has some good advice to offer, "When your heart is in

your dream, no request is too extreme." So, what are you waiting for?

    Follow your dream!

DARE TO DREAMThere is inside you

    all of the potential

to be whatever you want to be,

    all of the energy

to do whatever you want to do.

Imagine yourself as you would like to be,

doing what you want to do,

and each day, take one step

    towards your dream.

And though at times it may seem too

    difficult to continue,

    hold on to your dream.

One morning you will awake to find

that you are the person you dreamed of,

doing what you wanted to do,simply because you had the courage

    to believe in your potential

and to hold on to your dream.

Setting dreams and goals requires active and creative thinking. It also

requires discipline and an investment of your time, talent and ability.

But, the results and rewards will be well worth your efforts. Goals

have an incredible track record of ensuring success .

According to Zig Ziglar, UCLA conducted a study on goal setting

that focused on people who attended the Peter Lowe SuccessSeminars. Everyone from psychiatrists and college professors to truck

drivers and high school students attended. Those with a written goals

program earned an average of $7,401 a month. Those without a goals

program earned an average of $3,397 a month. The study also found

that those with goals were happier, healthier and got along better with

    family members.

    Another famous study,

    conducted at Harvard,

    examined the impact of goal

    setting. Researchers surveyed

    the members of one of

    Harvards graduating classes

    and asked the graduates if

they had clear goals for their

    future and a plan to

    accomplish them. Only 3 %

    of the graduates had written

    goals with specific plans to

achieve them. Ten years later, researchers interviewed the same class

members and found that the 3 percent whod had clear written goals

were worth ten times as much as the other 97 percent of the graduates

    combined.

Imagine the impact a proven dream-building and goal-setting program

like the one outlined in this book could have on your life, your family,

    your business and your finances!

I dont care how much power,

brilliance or energy you have, if you

dont harness it and focus it on a

specific target, and hold it there yourenever going to accomplish as much as

    your ability warrants.

In India, Doctors are meant to be rich. Dr Ravindra Koelhe, MD had all the

qualifications to be rich and live a luxurious life but he chose the other way.

After studies, most Doctors head towards places, where they can earn but

Dr. Ravindra Koelhe went to a Tribal Region to serve people and not to

    earn.

He runs a clinic in Melghat of Maharasthra since last 24 years and charges

only Rs. 2 for the first visit and Rs. 1 for the second visit from Tribal

    patients. Ruskin Bond once wrote

If you want to serve mankind, go and work among the poorest and most

    neglected.

We can not count how many actually understood and followed what Bond

said, but yes Dr. Ravindra Koelhe is one of those selfless souls who

understood each and every word that Bond wrote.

    How You See YourselfSelf Image:

Would it surprise you to know that a definition of self concept - how

you see yourself, will determine the results and outcomes you

    derive from your goals?

Your definition of self concept - how you see yourself, directly

correlate with your ability to maintain a positive frame of mind. It is

this positive state that will help you to adequately manage and

overcome any life storms you experience. But first, you must learn

how to nurture this positive state.

Self-concept or self-identity is the sum total of a being's knowledge

and understanding of his or her self. The self-concept is different from

self-consciousness, which is an awareness or preoccupation with one's

self. Components of the self-concept include physical, psychological,

and social attributes, which can be influenced by the individual'sattitudes, habits, beliefs and ideas. These components and attributes

can not be condensed to the general concepts of self-image and the

    self-esteem.

    Pedagogical aims

YOU enter college as a unique individual, consisted of genes,

environment, and a certain spark within yourself. An increased

awareness of how special that unique spark really makes him/herhelps YOU retain that quality. Our goal as facilitators is not to

produce cookie-cutter professional adults but to nourish each

    student's individual soul.

As an ancient Chinese proverb says:

    I hear and I forget

    I see and I remember

    I doand I understand.

Whether youre an introvert or extrovert,

you can change your personality traits if you really want to.

It may be healthier, however, to just accept who you are and honor the personality you have.

If youre introverted and prefer to spend your time alone reading or writing, then do it!!!

If youre extroverted and crave the spotlight then party away!!!

Your personality traits arent set in stone, but you shouldnt attempt to change them unless they disrupt your life or make others unhappy.

Anita Roddick was a woman of a different breed. After all, who would have that kind of magnanimity to send her husband off to a 2 year expedition while slogging on a new business and taking care of 2 young

    kids?

Born to an Italian couple who had migrated to England, Anita started working at a very young age at her parents cafe in Litt lehampton. She would work through the weekends at the cafeand then cramping in one of the rooms with both her parents and grandparents, while the other rooms in their house were rented out.

Having come from an immigrant background, it was no wonder Anita could relate very well with foreigners in her town. When she was 10, she started to take a interest in human rights

after reading a book about the Holocaust. Perhaps it was the same affinity that won her a teaching scholarship to be on kibbutz in Israel, exposing her to the wor ld outside England.

It was nevertheless a short stint as young Anita was later sacked for allegedly taking part in a prank. Although it tainted her teaching career, the issue saw her taking up a bohemian life-

style, traveling around Israel on a shoestring and then living in Paris and Switzerland for a few months. All that while, she was supporting herself through short term teaching assignments.

She eventually decided that there was more to life than that and left teaching for good, traveling to various countries such as Tahiti, New Caledonia, Australia, Madagascar and South

Africa. Her expatriation from South Africa for patronizing a jazz club on black night culminated a years of travel and mad e her so broke and homesick that she finally decided to call it

    quits.

After she returned to England, she met Gordon Roddick, a young writer and poet who was a regular at her parents cafe turned bar. They got married and had 2 daughters in short span 2

years. To support the young family, Gordon went into a few business ventures and when his first picture framing shop went bust, he later worked with Anita to operate 2 businesses

simultaneously : a boardinghouse and a restaurant. Both were not without struggles, too. The boardinghouse was a convert from an original bed & breakfast idea. And the restaurant only

prospered after they changed the initial gourmet health food menu to a grill & fry mix of steaks, hamburgers and fries.

The next 3 years saw the Roddicks waking up in the wee hours to run the boardinghouse and tend the restaurant until 1am the next day. Though the restaurant was very popular in the

town, the income which was only enough to cover the operating costs, came at the expense of quality time with their 2 daughters. Taking into consideration those factors and Gordons

growing desire to pursue his childhood dream (of riding horseback 5,300 miles from Buenos Aires to New York), the Roddicks sold their businesses and searched for another alternative

that would support the family when Gordon was away but allow Anita to work regular hours so that she could take care of the children in the evenings.

All It Takes Is An Idea & Some Creativity. Anita eventually had an idea. She decided to set up a shop selling environmental -friendly cosmetics that used natural ingredients. Though it

was a good concept, she had a hard time convincing the bank because of her rock star like image. It was only when Gordon forced her to revisit the bank wearing a power suit with a well

written business plan before her loan request was approved. Anitas ability to inject creativity into her limitations was unquestionably her recipe for success. With the money, she set up the

first The Body Shop outlet in artsy Brighton in 1976 and began with 15 products, 5 different sizes for each. She later admitted that the different sizes stemmed from the need to stack up the

store shelves so that it wouldnt look so empty. Ingenious, isnt it? Even when she didnt have funds to purchase enough of t hose inexpensive bottles (similar to the ones used by hospitals

for urine samples), she was creative enough to bank on the go green movement and started the refill-the-used-bottles concept. Not only was the concept well received by the environmental

enthusiasts, it struck a chord with the thrifty crowd. Her creativity was also extended to the interior design and publicity of The Body Shop outlet. Who would have expected that the

signature dark green colour used on the walls, which came to symbolize the companys recycling and sustainability efforts, wa s a bid to hide the shops unsightly water marks? And who

would have known that a lawsuit threat by 2 nearby funeral parlors for using the brand name The Body Shop would turn out to be a no cost newspaper publicity campaign? In fact, the

free publicity was so sensational that she made 130 on the grand opening day, way exceeding Gordons target of 300 a week.

When Gordon came home, not only was he excited that Anita had opened a second outlet in another town nearby, he also worked with her subsequently to develop The Body Shop into a

franchise, using whatever additional funds they generated into product research. That business model allowed them to open at least 2 stores each month by 1982. 2 years later, the

Have you ever set a goal and

    not achieved it?

Most people have. In fact, its quite common for people to get stuck in

an endless cycle of setting goals and then quitting them shortly after

wards and accomplishing nothing at all.

Why do people do this? One of the biggest reasons is a lack ofcommitment to their goal. Without commitment a goal will gradually

shrink in importance, and the temptation to quit will seem much more

attractive, especially when obstacles cause setbacks and delays.

On the other hand, if you make a serious commitment and then

continually remind yourself of it, youll be much more likely to persevere

    and achieve the goal.

DARE TO DREAMCommitting to your Goals

Heres how to commit to your goals:

First and foremost, you have to make sure that every goal you set is of importance to you. This can be tricky because we so

often fool ourselves into thinking we want one thing when we want something entirely different. Take some time with this

part of the process, and be sure that you get to the heart of what you really want. Why do you want it? What will it do for

you? What positive things will it bring to your life? How will it help you? How will it make you feel when its accomplished?

Write all of this down and keep it handy so you can refer to it as often as necessary if you feel your commitment beginning to

slip. Also ask yourself if your goal is worth the effort and sacrifice that will be needed to achieve it.

If you can honestly answer yes, you are on the way!

Think about what will happen if you dont follow through. Would nothing much happen if you dont achieve your goal? If

not, then you need to raise the stakes! You have to make your goal the most important thing in the world, and if you dont doit, youll deal with negative consequences. Even if you have to indulge in a bit of make believe in order to do this, do

it. For example, play up the fact that youll lose respect for yourself if you dont follow through; or you might agree to give up

something you love if you dont make it happen.

Then, each and every day, renew your commitment. Its easy to be committed when your goal is new and your motivation is

high, but you need to be able to STAY committed no matter what! Each day when you awaken, read through the goal you

wrote down on the first day, and stress again how vitally important it is to you. Promise yourself that youre go-

ing to do as much as you can to work on your goal that day, and every day until you achieve it.

When it comes right down to it, no one can achieve your goals for you. If you want to achieve them, youll have to find the

determination necessary to keep going. Inactivity and procrastination are usually nothing more than bad habits.

    Looking back at those

turbulent times in my life, I learned that success is a process in which

a person must go through and complete a series of actions, changes

and phases to produce success and the results wanted in life.

It reminds me of a story about a man who one day found a cocoon for

a butterfly in a park. The man noticed a small opening appeared in thecocoon, so he sat down and watched the butterfly for several hours as

it struggled to force its body through the little hole. Then the butterfly

seemed to stop making progress. It appeared as if it had gone as far as

it could and could go no further. At that point, the man decided to

help the poor butterfly. So he took out a pocket-knife that also had a

small pair of scissors attached and he snipped the remaining bit of the

cocoon. Afterwards, the butterfly emerged easily. But something was

strange. The butterfly had a swollen body and shriveled wings. The

man continued to watch the butterfly because he expected at any

moment for the wings to enlarge and expand to be able to support its

swollen body, which should contract in time, but neither happened.

In fact, that poor butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around

with a swollen body and deformed wings. It was never able to fly.

What the man had done, in his kindness and haste and did not

understand, was that the restricting cocoon and the struggle required

for the butterfly to get through the small opening of the cocoon was

part of its success process. It was part of the process of forcing fluid

from its body into its wings so that it would only be ready to fly once

it had first struggled and achieved freedom from the cocoon on its

    own.

If you went through all your life without struggling, without obstacles,

without being uncomfortable it would cripple you. Not only that, you

could never fly and you would not be as strong as you are

now. So it's critical that you embrace, endure and

complete what you started the day you decided to pursue

your goals, passion and dreams, your success process!

Your great-grandfather knew what it meant to work hard. He hauled hay all day long, making sure that the cows got fed. In Fast Food Nation (Houghton

Mifflin, 2001), Eric Schlosser writes about a worker who ruptured his vertebrae, wrecked his hands, burned his lungs, and was eventually hit by a train as part of his 15-year career at a slaughterhouse.

    Now that'shard work.

The meaning of hard work in a manual economy is clear. Without the leverage of machines and organizations, working hard meant producing more. Producing more, of course, was the best way to feed

    your family.

Those days are long gone. Most of us don't use our bodies as a replacement for a machine -- unless we're paying for the privilege and getting a workout at the gym. These days, 35% of the American

workforce sits at a desk. Yes, we sit there a lot of hours, but the only heavy lifting that we're likely to do is restricted to putting a new water bottle on the cooler. So do you still think that you work hard?

You could argue, "Hey, I work weekends and pull all-nighters. I start early and stay late. I'm always on, always connected with a BlackBerry. The FedEx guy knows which hotel to visit when I'm on

vacation." Sorry. Even if you're a workaholic, you're not working very hard at all.

Sure, you're working long, but "long" and "hard" are now two different things. In the old days, we could measure how much grain someone harvested or how many pieces of steel he made. Hard work

meant more work. But the past doesn't lead to the future. The future is not about time at all. The future is about work that's really and truly hard, not time-consuming. It's about the kind of work that

requires us to push ourselves, not just punch the clock. Hard work is where our job security, our financial profit, and our future joy lie.

It's hard work to make difficult emotional decisions, such as quitting a job and setting out on your own. It's hard work to invent a new system, service, or process that's remarkable. It's hard work to tell

your boss that he's being intellectually and emotionally lazy. It's easier to stand by and watch the company fade into oblivion. It's hard work to tell senior management to abandon something that it has

been doing for a long time in favor of a new and apparently risky alternative. It's hard work to make good decisions with less than all of the data.

Today, working hard is about taking apparent risk. Not a crazy risk like betting the entire company on an untested product. No, an apparent risk: something that the competition (and your coworkers)

believe is unsafe but that you realize is far more conservative than sticking with the status quo.

Richard Branson doesnt work more hours than you do. Nether does Steve Ballmer or Carly Fiorina. Robyn Waters, the woman who revolutionized what Target sells- - and helped the company trounce

Kmart - - probably worked fewer hours than you do in an average week.

None of the people who are racking up amazing success stories and creating cool stuff are doing it just by working more hours than you are. And I hate to say it, but they're not smarter than you either.

They're succeeding by doing hard work.

As the economy plods along, many of us are choosing to take the easy way out. Were going back to the future, to a definition of work that embraces the grindstone. Some people (a precious few, so far)

are realizing that this temporary recession is the best opportunity that theyve ever had. Theyre working harder than ever- - mentally - - and taking all sorts of emotional and personal risks that are bound

    to pay off.

Hard work is about training yourself to leap over this barrier, tunnel under the barrier, drive through the other barrier. And,after youve done that, to do it again the next day.

The big insight: The riskier your (smart) coworkers hard work appears to be, the safer it really is. Its the people having difficult conversations, inventing remarkable products, andpushing the envelope (and, perhaps, still going home at 5:00PM) who are building a recession - proof future for themselves. So tomorrow, when you go to work, really sweet. Your

    time is worth the effort.

    Great teamworkbegins with an R

Teams form around a single common purpose. Team-work occurs within a team only when there is respect.Great teams evolve around self respect and respect for

    each other.

In retrospect, all great teams reflect on the journey theyhave made as individuals and how they have learnt to ap-preciate the skills, knowledge and behavior of theirrespective team-mates.

To create a great team when they are being built rather than in retrospect, individual team members must firstly have self respect.

Self esteem is not enough. Self esteem requires a positive evaluation of us against some standard, often another person. Self respect requires

no such comparison. It merely requires that we like ourselves for what we are, good and bad.

When we have self respect we have little need to win as an individual in a team and are more likely to play our role to the best of our ability, with humility and with good humour.

When we have self respect, we have a vastly improved capability to respect others. Not having to be better than someone else, but havingdue respect of our abilities, enables us to maintain and improve relationships even through conflict.

It allows us to welcome differences of opinion as a means of getting the best solution rather than avoiding them as a precursor to unpleasantconflict.

Team members who have self respect and respect others can operate with clarity by being honest without the ex-

    pectation of an emotional response.

Have yourpresentation skills ever let you down in the past?

Have you ever avoided giving a presentation at work?

Might you be more successful at work if you were a better and more effective presenter?

The good news is that Effective Presentation Skills can be developed by almost anyone with

the right training. But what are Effective Presentation Skills? And how do you develop them?

    Just be yourself?

Great presenters often lookas if they are naturals and relaxed when presenting.

So does that mean you just need to relax and be yourself the next time you are getting ready to present at

work? Or can this often be somewhat misguided advice?

The reality is that most people are already just being themselves when they present.

And the sad fact for some, (especially those that have not had any training) is that they are also so far outside of

their comfort zones they appear to their audience as unnatural as a duck out of water!

So unless youre already a good communicator think first about developing your presentation skills rather

than just trying to relax and be yourself.

You can develop the skills to present effectively

And with the right training and coaching, you really can develop the skills and confidence needed to deliver an

    effective presentation.

By building on what already works well with your personality; developing new skills and an increased

confidence; and of course, removing the bad old natural habits that messed up your presentations in the

past, you can be well on your way to looking like a natural when you present.

And as a result, start to realize your potential and present effectively.

When you put across a new idea

    convincingly, such that it is

discussed at length by the group, it

    can only be positive.

    - XYZ

Lets discuss some few relevant points which one should remember

    while appearing for a GD.

One needs to know what one's objective in the group is---- to be noticed by

the panel and to contribute meaningfully in an attempt to help the group

    reach the right consensus.

    1) The first thing is that the panel should notice you. Merely making a

meaningful contribution and helping the group arrive at a consensus is not

    enough.

You must ensure that the group hears you. If the group hears you, so will

    the evaluator.

You need to be assertive. It depends on you how you steer the group in the

right direction, once it gets stuck to something. This gives you the chance to

    showcase your leadership skills.

Most importantly, you have to make your chances. Many group discussion

participants often complain that they did not get a chance to speak. The fact isthat in no group discussion will you get a chance to speak. There is nothing

more unacceptable in a GD than keeping one's mouth shut or just murmuring

    things which are inaudible.

    2) The second most essential thing is that your contribution to the group should

be meaningful. For that you need to have a good knowledge base. You should be

able to think logically and hence put forth you ideas cohesively. The quality of

what you said is more valuable than the quantity. It doesnt help if you shout at the

top of your voice and speak at great length, what matters most is what you speak

and how it creates an impact on the group as well as the evaluators.

    3) The last most important thing is that you must be clearly seen to be attempting to

build a consensus. This shows your ability to work in a team, your ability to adjust

yourself in new surroundings and help others in your team to reach a definite

conclusion amidst difference of opinions. After all this is what all Group

Discussions aim at: To be able to discuss and arrive at a consensus.

To be able to meet the previous requirements during a Group

Discussion, one should keep in mind the following basic mantras:

a)Be Yourself. Be as natural as possible and dont try to be someone you

    are not.

b)Take time to organize your thoughts

. Dont suddenly jump to any

conclusion. Think before you speak so that you dont speak anything

irrelevant to the topic being discussed.

c)Dont make the mistake of looking at the panel while you are speaking.

You are in a Group Discussion and you are expected to discuss among

group members, so always look at your group members while you are

    speaking.

d)Seek clarifications if you have any doubts regarding the subject, before

    the discussion commences.

    e) Yourbody language says a lot about you - your gestures and

mannerisms are more likely to reflect your attitude than what you say.

    f) Never try to show your dominance. Be assertive, speak yourself and let others

    speak as well.

g)Dont lose your cool if anyone says anything you object to. The key is to stay

objective: Don't take the discussion personally.

h)Show your leadership skills. Motivate the other members of the team to speak.

Be receptive to others' opinions and do not be abrasive or aggressive.

    i) Remember, opening the discussion is not the only way of gaining attention and

recognition. If you do not give valuable insights during the discussion, all your

efforts of initiating the discussion will be in vain.

Dont be disheartened if you did not do well in your First Group

Discussion. Instead try to learn from your past mistakes. Remember,

    Practice makes man perfect!!!!!
