Daniel Lee Si Horng - Artist Statement
I'm never without a sketchbook so I am constantly drawing. Sometimes, the drawings are left in the sketchbook but others go on to be developed into story ideas.
I didn't set out to be a graphic designer or to do motion graphics that could be used in music videos and commercials but as my portfolio developed and people started to notice my work, it has left me with the utmost confidence and passion to pursue what I am really pleased with.
I tend to focus on street culture and the surreal, much of which stems from dreams and the urban city I live in. People say my work is disturbing and tends to provoke. At school, I was interested in science and literature but art topped it all. I merely used the first two subjects as potential instruments for my creations.
Some of my subject matter revolves around the habits of people and the different dreams that they pursue and talk about. There is never one fixed direction, now that’s the exciting part because every dream brings me to a whole new perspective, stimulating more and more ideas.
To me, aesthetics in art is important. It’s true that all artists want to convey a message through the things we do. Skills and techniques can be trained over time but ideas are gold and they evolve. I never like to explain my works because I believe that if you make a graphic or video the way you want it to be, hopefully, it speaks for itself. It’s best that the viewer experiences the takeaway feeling you envisioned while creating this piece of work. There’s no right or wrong, only what is and what isn’t. And that’s why I am happy to do what I do.
Influences My influences count from anything from the people around me to the materials I read. Family and friends continually provide me with the opportunities for random topics and idea generations. Banksy and Carlos Huante are some of my all time favorite artists while magazines like IDN and PLAY are other great sources of inspiration. Awesome motion designers like Daniel Yount and Nick Campbell serve as great examples to follow.
Infinite Frameworks SWOT Analysis
Strengths Weaknesses Infinite Frameworks is one of the
largest award winning facilities in South East Asia with a strong regional branding.
The organization creates a large
scope of work ranging from TV commercials to full scale CG animation.
It engages in both local and
international productions.
The organization works closely with the Economic Development Board (EDB) and Media Development Authority (MDA), ensuing strong government support.
Infinite Frameworks has a strong
presence in South East Asia but it is often argued that they should look into portfolios in other countries to spread business risk.
It has an inability to promote the
profession, resulting in lack of professional identification.
The market is price sensitive, most
works are outsourced to them. Most of its income depends on rolling projects.
Opportunities Threats Advanced technologies are
available to foster more effective production pipelines.
The creative industry is building up
in Singapore, increasing awareness and attracting more potential clients.
Animation and post production is
growing rapidly and specializing in those would secure more projects.
Increase in talent pool globally,
allowing room for higher quality productions.
Close working relationship with the
government ensures a higher chance of securing government funded projects.
Their scope of work and crew
remain vulnerable due to other emerging visual effects company.
No one knows if visual effects will
stay in favor with the audience, or whether other forms of CG will replace visual effects in future.
Due to increasing awareness, the
market for CG has become more price competitive, clients might just go for a better deal.
CRITICA SWOT Analysis
Strengths Weaknesses CRITICA is a 5 year old multi-
award winning creative studio. It specializes in post production and
effects, setting them apart from most studios which does everything but specializes in none.
Works of CRITICA has reached the
global scale in terms of clients and airtime.
Consists of a very motivated team
that strives to push the creative boundaries for their clients and every project they work for.
Being an independent creative
studio, it lacks government funding, reducing its resources.
CRITICA has a relatively small
team which results in more extensive work rate given the number of projects they are involved in.
The organization also has to
perform leverage on its quotes as the market is price sensitive.
It’s reputation is not strong enough
because it is relatively young.
Opportunities Threats Advanced technologies are
available to foster more effective production pipelines.
The creative industry is building up
in Singapore, increasing awareness and attracting more potential clients.
Collaborations with other huge
companies to raise their profile.
Increase in talent pool globally, allowing room for higher quality productions.
Its potential is not realized fully yet
and it’s a bright start for this budding organization.
The lack of government support
might cause problems in terms of funding and potential loss of jobs to other studios.
Summary for Choice of companies and SWOT analysis The 2 companies I have chosen are relatively similar to one another. They are involved heavily in post production which includes visual effects and motion graphics, something that I want to venture into. Therefore, the opportunities and threats they face in the creative industry in Singapore is almost equal being that motion graphics is still relatively new to the creative industry in Singapore and development might take a while. The rapid growth ensues a larger talent pool and also a greater opportunity to boost each company profile in the industry. However, Infinite Frameworks has an upper hand for now having established a working relationship with the government authorities, something relatively important not only in Singapore but in many countries as well. They are also 7 years older than CRITICA. This is not to say that CRITICA is not building a name for themselves because despite it being a young company, it has already garnered several awards whilst producing works that are featured in both local and international channels.
Infinite Frameworks, Company Profiling Infinite Frameworks (IFW) is a media and entertainment company based in both Singapore and Indonesia (Batam). The organization was established in 1997 as a post-production facility and has since evolved and grown to take up other core roles like CG animation to content distribution rights management. It now boasts 150 staff engaging in both local and international productions. Close working relations with the Economic Development Board (EDB) and Media Development Authority (MDA) puts them in one of the leading roles as Asia’s media player in providing cutting edge productions to the global media industry.
CRITICA, Company Profiling Founded in 2005 by Xavier Oon, CRITICA is an award-winning design and animation studio, specializing in seamlessly blending motion graphics, typography and 3D with live-action.
