Definitions of what constitutes dance aredependent on social, cultural, aesthetic, artisticand moralconstraints and range from functional

movement (such as folk dance) to virtuosotechniques such as ballet. Dance can beparticipatory, socialor performedfor anaudience. It can also be ceremonial, competitiveor

erotic. Dance movements may be without

significance in themselves, such as in balletorEuropean folk dance, or have a gesturalvocabulary/symbolicsystem as in many Asiandances. Dance can embody or express ideas, emotionsor tell a story.

has evolved many styles. BreakdancingandKrumpingare related to the

hip hop culture.African dance is interpretative.

Ballet, Ballroom,Waltz, and Tango are classical styles of dancewhile Squareand the Electric Slideare forms of

    step dances.

Dance does not leave behind clearly identifiablephysical artifacts such as stone tools, huntingimplements or cave paintings. It is not possible

to say when dance became part of humanculture. Dance has certainly been an importantpart of ceremony, rituals, celebrationsandentertainmentsince before the birth of the

earliest human civilizations. Archeologydeliverstraces of dance from prehistoric timessuch as

the 9,000 year old Rock Shelters of Bhimbetkapaintings in Indiaand Egyptiantomb paintingsdepicting dancing figures from c. 3300 BC.

One of the earliest structured uses of

dances may have been in the

performance and in the telling of myths. It was also sometimes used to show

feelings for one of the opposite gender.

It is also linked to the origin of "love

making." Before the production ofwritten languages, dance was one of the

methods of passing these stories down

    from generation to generation.

Another early use of dance may have been as a

    precursor to ecstatictrance statesin healing

rituals. Dance is still used for this purpose bymany cultures from the Brazilian rainforestto the

    Kalahari Desert.

Sri Lankan dancesgoes back to the

mythological times of aboriginalyingyang twinsand "yakkas" (devils). According to a Sinhalese

    legend, Kandyan dancesoriginate, 250 years

ago, from a magic ritual that broke the spell on a

    bewitched king. Many contemporary dance

forms can be traced back to historical,

    traditional, ceremonial, and ethnicdance.

    9/24

CENTERINGThis is fundamental to your ability to dance well. This is

maintaining a sense of your own body center that holdsyou together as you move. It allows you to movegracefully and freely. This means you have to have theability to move, to hold, to organize yourself aroundyour own physical body. If you are centered you caneventually learn how to do anything. If you are notcentered you may develop beautiful looking arms andlegs but never be able to move well. Liken your center tohome. If you dont have a sense of home you willprobably get lost every time you go out. Your bodyneeds to be balanced like a see-saw. Position fluctuatesbetween individuals. Center for Middle Eastern Dance isin the solar plexus. Every movement has to go through

center. This is what makes it Orientale or eastern. Yournatural base is approximately just below the navel butthe movements for this dance form come from the solarplexus. Everything emanates from there. Start by feelinghow your arms and legs work from the same centralpoint in the back. Moving from your center will makemovements easier to control.

    GRAVITY

This is the force that holds you to the earth. It is a force you have to work with becauseit constantly inhibits movement. Try tobecome aware of the pulls in your own

body. What points are taking the mostweight? When you push on these pointscan you feel a rise up from them? Youshould be holding yourself better. Whenyou dance you want to feel as if someone

is pushing you under your buttocks and thebase of your spine and directing the energyup through your breastbone.

    11/24

BALANCEBalance is concerned with more thanbalancing on one leg. Your aim is to achieveand constantly maintain an inner balance ofthe whole body. It is tension of mutualsupport among all parts that brings thewhole together in a new way. It is an inner

relationship between all the points of yourbody which you hold in your awareness. It isnot something you do once in awhile. It isconstant. A sense of balance whether youare moving or standing. In the actual act of

balancing, if you can find inner balance , youare nearly there. If you are aware internallythe need for the sensation of balance, youshould be able to get it. * Remember, balancing in both states is an active state.

    POSTURE

To achieve this element you need tochange your perception of your body, thereis often a wide discrepancy between whatfeels right and what looks right. Dancerswork all their dance live on their posture, also called alignment. It is the key tobalance and movement. Your posture notonly reveals your feelings but can also

reveal feelings in you. Learn how to standproperly. You will actually feel brighter andmore aware.

GESTUREGesture involves using the body as anexpressive instrument to communicatefeelings and ideas in patterns of movement. With subtle gestures and postural attitudeswe show cooperation, give confidence tofriends or display aggression to enemies.

Arms crossed over chest are a protectivewall. Hands on hips mean "show me", fistson hips is even more challenging. Angerpatterns are depicted very differently formjoy or sadness. Weight on one hip -waiting.

Hands out in front you ready to give orreceive. Raising shoulders is a gesture of notknowing or caring. Shoulders forwardexpresses pain. Tapping foot boredom.Observe! Recognize what the body is saying.

RHYTHMFinding rhythm is largely a matter of paying

attention. It is something everybody has, though, some people are not as aware orsensitive to it. Our hearts beat to a rhythm, ourlungs breathe to another. Rhythm is essentialfor a dancer. Pay attention! Generally the beat

is carried by the drum. Make sure you are righton the beat, not slightly late. All the work goinginto making a beat has already been completedby the time you hear it. In fact to get it right, you have to anticipate the beat slightly. Feel asif you are making the beat with your body aswell as hearing it. Try to be at one with it,rather than dancing to it. It is the rhythm andthe beat of the dance that form the "threads"which allow you to memorize the structure ofthe dance.

MOVING in SPACEYou need to be as aware of the space around

you as a cat. You have to move with care andawareness, gauging the space. Space is notjust empty air but a tangible element that youmove through. Consider the space an areayou must go through. Consciously go

through space. Feel your accomplishment asa journey through space. You will expressthoughts and emotions. Actually press yourfeelings out through your torso and limbs insuch a way as to show other people how weare feeling and to satisfy our desire ofmovement. Our muscles feel better whenthey are used, and once we get used tomoving them, the whole body will respondby working in harmony with itself; to dance.

    16/24

BREATHINGBreathing is crucial to dance. Not only does itbring oxygen to the body but it also gives yourmovements fluency and harmony. It is anexpressive tool. Calm slow breathing suggestsa certain degree of self-control. Denotes aspecific quality of movement. A movement

with breath has a controlled and consideredextension of time, a clear beginning and endno matter how fast or slow the phrase. Aphrase without breath looks stiff andmechanical. It is important to learn how to do

two or three things at the same time. Youfrequently have to divide your attention whiledancing. You must learn to breathe deeplyexpanding your ribs at the back of the bodyrather than from the front. This will also give amore emotional, organic look.

    MUSIC

is closely related to the particular dance forwhich it was created. It should not beregarded as merely an aid to the rhythmicmovement of the dancers. When we moveas a result of strong physical or emotionalimpulses or reaction, we do not do sosilently. We sometimes scream in fear, laugh with joy, or cry out in pain. We make

sounds even as we move. Music in dancehas a similar role to play. It motivates themovement of the dancer.

This genre of dance is very hard to masterand requires much practice. It is bestknown in the form of Late Romantic Balletor Ballet Blanc, which preoccupies itselfwith the female dancer to the exclusion of

almost all else, focusing on pointe work, flowing, precise acrobatic movements, andoften presenting the dancers in theconventional short white French tutu. Later

developments include expressionist ballet,Neoclassical ballet, and elements ofModern dance

    CONTEMPORARY DANCE

is a form of danceinfluenced by bothclassical balletand modern dance. It takesits technique and use of pointeworkfromclassical ballet, although it permits agreater range of movement that may notadhere to the strict body lines set forth byschools of ballet technique. Many of itsconcepts come from the ideas and
