particular speciality of Alsace, the spicy Gewurztraminer. This evening the ‘Captain’s Dinner’ will take place onboard, serving delicious specialities of the countries andregions visited during our cruise.

Day Six Your final day’s cruising is spent glidingmajestically between the ancient forested outcrops ofthe Vosges and the Black Forest, through the Rhinerift valley, formed millennia ago by massive geologicalforces. Our first visit is to the ancient town of Breisach, whose historic heart is surrounded by immense stoneramparts. This afternoon we drive through some ofcentral Europe’s most stunning scenery. Rugged valleysof white-water rivers and cascading waterfalls abound.Rolling hillsides covered with huge, densely packed pinetrees. This is the Black Forest at its best, exactly as youexpect it to be. We visit the archetypical town of Titisee, nestling on the shores of its crystal clear lake. Onrejoining the ship, we enjoy the evening’s dinner cruiseen-route to Switzerland and our next mooring at Basel.

Day Seven For many today will be the highlight of thecruise. First we take the short drive to Lucerne, by farSwitzerland’s most beautiful city, attracting well-heeledvisitors for two centuries. The scenery becomes evermore dramatic, as we enter the Bernese Oberland,in central Switzerland, it becomes quite literally breath-taking! This is the Alpine heart of Europe, amongst thefinest mountain scenery on earth. We have a shortstop in Interlaken, wonderfully situated between twoshimmering lakes, whilst on the opposite bank, thesnow-capped Jungfrau, punctures the sky. We then

pass through the superb Lauterbrunnen valley toGrindelwald, a simply stunning village in an amazinglocation, nestling below the north face of the Eigerwhose sheer cliffs have challenged climbers forcenturies This is Switzerland at its very best. We thenreturn to the ship for our final sumptuous dinner.

Day Eight This morning we take the TGV (France’sfamous high-speed train) to Paris, connecting with theEurostar service to London St. Pancras International. In order to facilitate the easy changing of trains, yourtour manager will accompany you.

We offer a choice of five stunningly beautiful and fascinating cruisesvisiting some wonderful sights such as Cologne, the Rhine Gorge, Trier, Koblenz, Heidelberg, Strasbourg,Basel, Lucerne, Vienna and Budapest. See vineyards, monasteries, medieval towns, breathtaking Alsaceand the Black Forest, absorb yourself in the history of Gutenberg, plus experience stunning scenery withenchanting castles on virtually every riverbend.

EXAMPLE ITINERARYDay One You take a late morning Eurostar from LondonSt. Pancras International arriving in Brussels, 1 hr. 50minutes later, where a coach will take you to your choiceof ship, moored in Cologne’s picturesque historic centre.

Day Two Awake and enjoy a sumptuous breakfast as thedelights of this river cruise unveil with the rolling hills ofthe Rhine Valley drifting silently by. The pretty waterfrontsof riverside towns come into view and the first of theRhine’s vineyards shimmer in the morning sun as weglide gently into our mooring to visit picturesque Koblenz, beautifully located at the confluence of the Rhine and itssister, the Moselle. Spend your free afternoon wanderingashore where you can explore the many medieval build-ings, housing a fine array of traditional shops and classicRhineland cafés. If you manage to resist the lusciouscakes on offer, you’ll be ready for your meticulouslyprepared dinner on board the ship, and afterwards, perhaps, shed some calories with a quiet stroll alongthe riverside promenade.

Day Three This morning, we explore the most famousof all the river’s reaches, the dramatic Rhine Gorge: steepvineyards give way to almost vertical rocky outcrops, towering 1,000 feet above the sweeping valley sides.Sailing past St Goar and the many ruined castles, youfeel the myths of this historic river coming to life, enveloping you. No legend is more famous than thatsurrounding the Loreley rock, where beautiful nymphsdistracted hapless sailors, luring them to their deathsin the treacherous waters. After lunch we berth nearRudesheim leaving you free to relax and take a quiet

stroll through the vineyards or maybe a cable car rideto the great statue of Germania, strikingly overlookingthe river’s exit from the gorge. After dinner this evening, why not end the day with a small Asbach – the brandydistilled in Rudesheim.

Day Four Continuing upstream, the Rhine is slower andOxbow lakes, long deserted by the river flow, providea haven for over a hundred species of bird life in oneof Germany’s largest nature reserves. Today you visitdelightfully medieval Speyer. During the 16th century innearby Worms, Martin Luther was declared an outlawfor his religious beliefs and banished from the HolyRoman Empire. His followers in Speyer protested, andthe word ‘Protestant’ came into being. You visit theneo-Gothic Gedachtniskirche, built to commemoratethis event, and the huge, richly decorated cathedral, oneof the finest Romanesque buildings in existence which, when it was built, was widely acclaimed as one of thefinest in Christendom. You also have free time to exploreas you wish, before rejoining the ship.

This afternoon we enjoy a walkingtour of this unique and picturesque 16th century town, bisected by canals and a maze of narrow streets linedwith timberframed houses plus the superb cathedral.Don’t be surprised if, as the shadows lengthen, you’retempted to linger a while in a typical Alsatian café tosample some of the world famous wine for which theregion is rightly renowned – maybe a Riesling or the

Day Seven After breakfast you visit the Amalfi coast, which claims to be Europe’s most beautiful which it isdifficult to dispute. You see Positano, Amalfi and thestunning medieval village of Ravello, full of tiny gardens, statues and narrow streets – the setting for Wagner’s‘Parsifal’ and now the haunt of countless celebrities.

• Return flights to Naples from Manchester• Seven nights half-board accommodation in a choice of excellent quality three or four-star hotels

in Sorrento• Guided tour of stunning Pompeii – a city preserved in time• Visit to the magnificent volcano of Vesuvius• Tour of the Amalfi Coast – one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world• Cruise to the stunning island of Capri• Visit to Naples, with its archaeological museum• Visit to hill top Ravello• Tours and visits worth over £160• Services of an experienced tour manager

The Sorrento peninsula and the Bay of Naples is simply one of the most beautiful corners of Europe, attractingvisitors for centuries in search of its outstanding scenery, tranquillity and some of the most wondrous ‘sights’from throughout history. Add the excellent food and wine, plus the Italians themselves with their legendary loveof life and you have all the ingredients for a wonderful tour.

Day One Fly to Milan and you will be taken to yourhotel, the four-star, 19th century Grand Hotel indelightful Cadenabbia. It enjoys a prime position on thelakeside, dates back to 1820, has long welcomed therich and famous including Queen Victoria, and exudeshistoric elegance. All rooms are air-conditioned and theswimming pool is open during the summer months, weather permitting. The restaurant enjoys stunningpanoramic views over the crystal-clear lake, with an alfresco terrace.

Day Two The delights of Lake Como are many, andthis morning you take a private boat and tour thebeautiful 18th century Villa del Balbianello. One of LakeComo’s finest villas, it features a renowned collectionof art and historic furniture including an oak bureaufrom Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory. The gardens area stunning series of manicured terraces full of fragrantroses and colourful borders, dominated by a classicthree-arched ‘loggia’, with everything using the ruggedtopography to great effect. This afternoon, you are atyour leisure to explore.

Day Three Today we enjoy a day of spectacularscenery and extraordinary Swiss engineering. Firstly,we ascend the Valtellina, a classic alpine valley withsoaring peaks rising to Tirano. Here, we board thefamous Bernina Express, one of the world’s slowest‘express’ trains, but one of its greatest rail journeys. It twists upwards in an amazing sequence of spirals, loops and tunnels to the summit at Ospizio Bernina, affording stunning vistas over snow-clad peaks andglacial lakes. We descend through pretty pastures anddense pine forests to the ostentatiously chic resort ofSt Moritz, where there’s time for a spot of shopping orperhaps afternoon tea and cake.

Day Four After breakfast we visit the historic town ofBergamo, arguably the most beautiful town in northernItaly. Strikingly crowning a hill, it was ruled for centuriesby Venice, when much of the graceful city we admiretoday was built. Centred around the Piazza Vecchia, its harmonious main square is a wonderful collectionof century’s old medieval buildings. There will be aguided tour of the old town followed by some free timeto explore as you wish. For art lovers, a short distance

from the old town, you may visit the highly acclaimedGalleria dell’Accademia, displaying masterpieces byCanaletto, Holbein, Velazquez and Botticelli.

Day Five Today we visit nearby Lake Maggiore, andits most attractive resort, Stresa. This stunning townowes its origins to the days of the ‘Grand Tour’, whenEurope’s 19th century aristocracy, having crossed theborder from Switzerland experienced their first tasteof Italy. Unmistakeable Mediterranean in character, its shores, lined with oleanders and palms, backedby classic belle époque hotels create an ambience ofclassic gentility. You can also take the short boat tripto Isola Bella, transformed by a 17th century Count, from a barren rock into an amazing terraced garden, admired by Queen Caroline of England, wife of GeorgeIV, and Napoleon and Josephine.

Day Six Today we travel to Lugano seized by theSwiss in 1512. It has since steadfastly refused anyopportunity to revert to Italy. A fascinating eclecticmix of traditional Swiss values and more laid-backLatin influences from across the border. The trainsrun on time and shops are just as chic, but there’s adistinctive Mediterranean feel unlike anything you’llexperience elsewhere in Switzerland. Tiny alleywayslead to unmistakably Italian piazzas, where you canrelax over a typically Italian lunch, but like anywherein Switzerland, the traffic laws are obeyed withoutquestion.

Day Seven This morning we enjoy a relaxing boat tripacross the shimmering lake to elegant Bellagio; withits idyllic location, it is often described as the mostbeautiful town in Italy. Once the haunt of monarchs, today the lake is lined by attractive, pastel-colouredbuildings, faded by decades of sunshine and narrowcobbled streets climb their way to the hilly centre.Awash with colourful flowers, Bellagio cannot bebettered for a long, lazy lunch in one of the manyrestaurants; followed by a stroll perhaps among themany typically formal, sculpture-studded gardens sobeloved of romantics over the centuries.
