AAAAAs the Holidays approach, I had an opportunity to

reflect back on years of Scouting and the enormous benefits

each of us gains for being part of the Boy Scouts of America

organization. This prominent values-based youth

development organization strives to build future leaders,

has served over 110 million members since the

organization’s inception back in 1910. The accomplishments

are due to the good deeds, sacrifices and dedication from

volunteer leaders, professional leaders, Scouts, parents, and

family members.

We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to the Boy Scouts

of America for all these years of service toward the needs of Vietnamese-American units

in the United States of America. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be a part of and

to share the same values and goals of which the Scouting foundation are based on. At the

same time, thanks to all the volunteers! Your dedication helps the Boy Scouts of America

remain one of the largest youth organizations in the United States.

Back in June 2011, we successfully accomplished the Vietnamese Scout Leaders

Summit at Philmont, New Mexico, under the leadership of Tr. Huy Tran, Tr. Dinh Tran

and Tr. Alina Lee, and the support of the National Vietnamese Scouting Committee

members. Our next major event will be “2012 Trai Khai Pha” - The National Venturing

Super Camp, focused especially on our Venturer members. It will be held in San Diego

July 8-14, 2012. This event will be coordinated by Tr. Hoanh Vu and his staff. On 2013, we

will have Tung Nguyen VII, a National Wood Badge for course for our Vietnamese-

American leaders, and to top off the year the BSA National Scouting Jamboree in 2013.

We especially appreciate our Vietnamese-American youth leaders for taking on

these enormous responsibilies and continue support enables us to accomplish the service

to all of our Vietnamese-American units and their needs.

May this Holiday Season bring you and your loved ones much happiness and

many blessings.

Caùc soùi con thì ñöôïc sinh hoaït rieâng trongdinning hall cuøng Akala Hai, Cubmaster Thieänvaø tröôûng Ngoâ Syõ Haân ñeán töø Michigan vaø moätvaøi tröôûng khaùc nöõa.Sau giôø côm tröa, caùc em laïi tieáp tuïc troø chôi lôùncho tôùi 4:30PM tuy thôøi tieát vaãn raát oi böùc duø döïbaùo thôøi tieát laø seõ coù möa. Chuùng toâi raát mongmöa xuoáng nhöng khoâng ñöôïc toaïi nguyeän.Traïi Heø GV15 ñöôïc ñeà xöôùng vôùi nhieàu troø chôiñoøi hoûi theå löïc, teamwork vaø hieåu bieát kyû naêngHöôùng Ñaïo. Nhöõng troø chôi naøy ñaõ laøm cho caùcem thích thuù vaø mong muoán coù nhöõng traïi töôngtöï trong töông lai. Qua nhöõng troø chôi COPE ñoøihoûi caùc em phaûi tuaân theo luaät chôi cuõng nhö vaânglôøi ngöôøi höôùng daån vaø giuùp ngöôøi ñoàng ñoäi thaêngtieán chung.Ngaøy thöù baûy 30 thaùng 7 naêm 2011

Troøchôi do ngöôøi ñaët ra, luaät chôi cuõng ñöôïc thieát laäp ñeå troøchôi coâng baèng vaø hôïp lyù, moãi moät ngöôøi tham döï ñeàuphaûi tuaân thuû luaät chôi thì keû thaéng ngöôøi thua seõ ñöôïchaøi hoøa.

Höôùng Ñaïo laø moät Phong traøo duøng troø chôi ñeågiaùo duïc khoâng nhöõng cho treû maø caû ngöôøi lôùn thoâng quatroø chôi. Vì baát cöù troø chôi ñöôïc xöû duïng trong HöôùngÑaïo ñeàu coù muïc ñích vaø taùc duïng mang tính giaùo duïc, thìsöï khen thöôûng trong Phong traøo cuõng laø moät troø chôivaäy.

Söï khen thöôûng trong Phong traøo coù taùc duïngraát lôùn nhöng laø moät troø chôi khoù vaø teá nhò, duø ñoái vôùi caùcem hay ñoái vôùi caùc Tröôûng cuõng vaäy vì troø chôi naøy haàuheát ña soá laø ngöôøi thaéng thì luaät chôi caàn khaéc khe, choïnloïc vaø khaùch quan. - Vôùi tieän nghi cuûa ñaát traïi, caùc phuï huynh ñaõduøng ñieän ñeå xöû duïng cho vieäc traïi khoângthua gì nhö ôû nhaø, naøo maùy quaït, maùylaïnh, DVD cho phim boä…

- Khí haäu khaù toát ñeïp trong thôøi gian traïi vaøcôn möa ñaàu muøa ñeå beá maïc traïi.

- Chöông trình vaên ngheä thaät ñaëc saéc cho caû 2ñeâm trình dieãn treân saân khaáu ngoaøi trôøi vôùikyû thuaät aâm thanh, maøn aûnh soáng ñoäng .

- Moät buoåi BBQ khoaûn ñaõi bôûi Lieân ñoaøn ChíLinh daønh cho taát caû traïi sinh trong khoângkhí thaân tình vôùi söï hoøa hôïp giöõa caùc ñoaønsinh khaùc ñôn vò vôùi cuøng moät lyù töôûng.


Just like many other Vietnamese refugees,Phu escaped on a boat with his sister and cousinsfrom Ca Mau, Vietnam to Galang, a refugee campin Indonesia in late 1989. Phu spent two and ahalf years in Galang with 20,000 people, wherehe was exposed to Scouting as a youth. Heremembered his dad, Historian Tran Gia Phung,used to wish that Scouting still existed in Vietnamafter the war so that Phu could be a Cub Scout.So now there he was, a Scout in a refugee camp!Since then, Scouting has given him all theopportunities to develop in skills in the differentsurvival areas, which he felt was a good use ofhis time. He had to do the repeat ninth gradeduring those two and half years just to keep himin school because ninth grade was the highestlevel taught in the refugee camp. Even throughthe hardships, Phu valued his refugee time, wherehis Scouting life started.

Phu immigrated to Toronto, Canada, in1992, where he went to school and finished hisundergraduate degree in Architecture at RyersonUniversity. Most of his free time was spent withhis Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and the rest of hisScouting family along with his own family. In1996, Phu luckily discovered that there werecareers in Scouting. That was the year he metNguyen Tan De at Gilwell Park, England, duringthe Wood Badge course, Tung Nguyen 3. Phu gotexcited about this idea but did not know how hecould have a life like De’s in Scouting.

During all the years living in Toronto,Phu served as Assistant Cubmaster, Cubmasterand Scoutmaster for Lien Doan Chi Lang, anotherfamily to Phu. Phu still remembers some ofparents who called him “anh” (older brother)because they thought he was older as a leadereven though he looked like he was just a Boy Scout.He took that as a reminder for his leadership role,your actions can make you look older than yourage and even the way you look.

In late 2000, Phu moved to Dallas, Texas,where he worked in the computer field as a Javaprogrammer for his cousin’s IT Company. He hada chance to do more volunteer work with De as aScoutmaster and an Associate Advisor in ThanhDoan Truong Son, Carrolton, Texas. As Phu kepthaving so much fun in Scouting, he decided to goto work for the Boy Scouts of America despite thewarning that living a Boy Scout professional lifeis different from having fun as a volunteer. Phuoften reminds himself “Scouting has done so muchfor me, I really want to give back to Scouting andpay it forward.” Phu became a District Executivein December, 2002, in San Jose, California, forthe Santa Clara County Council. He also servedas District Director, Field Director and Directorof Camping Services in the eight years he wasthere. He again valued all the great experienceshe had with the Scouts, the leaders; and all thefriends (Viet and non-Viet) he made during timethis time of service. They are his family!

In July, 2011, Phu got promoted to workas an International Executive for theInternational Department at BSA NationalCouncil. For the past 18 years, he has been lookingforward to opportunities to serve youth fromunits, to districts, to councils. Now he has a chanceto serve the youth nationally, and through theInternational Department, he may have chanceto serve the youth internationally through the BoyScouts of America. Phu is so excited about whathe can do for Scouting. He claims Scouting isalready in his blood!

When we have a voiceat the National level, we have the ability toorganize special events such as Tung Nguyentraining, sending a Vietnamese-American troopto the National Scout Jamboree, and Trai KhaiPha, etc.The Boy Scouts of America organized theNational Vietnamese Scouting Committee on June5, 2002, at the Boy Scouts of America NationalAnnual Meeting with the objective to serveVietnamese-American Scouting Units throughtheir local council and to provide the Scoutingprogram to the Vietnamese-American communitynationwide.The National Vietnamese Scouting Committee,Boy Scouts of America provides resources suchas Huong Dao Ca, Tro Choi Huong Dao and otherScouting literature to support Vietnamese-American Scouts, leaders and units to continue topreserve the tradition and the VietnameseScouting movement in a foreign land.

It is with great pleasure that I announce Trai Khai Pha 2012, a Vietnamese VenturingSuper Camp commissioned by the National Vietnamese Scouting Committee of the Boy Scoutsof America (BSA), scheduled for July 8-14, 2012 at Camp Fiesta Island in beautiful sunnySan Diego, CA. Camp Fiesta Island is centrally located: 2 miles from Sea World, 2 miles fromthe modern Old Town Amtrak Coaster Station, 8 miles north of Balboa Park – home of theworld famous San Diego Zoo, and 10 miles south of the University of California, San Diego.Camp activities include, but are not limited to aquatics activities such as board sailing, flyinghull sailing, small boat sailing, canoeing, kayaking, Dragon boat racing, snorkeling,motorboating, rowing, swimming, and last but not least, night kayaking across the bay towatch fireworks from the nearby world-famous Sea World. To top it all off, half of the campsites are literally on the beach, and the other half are within a leisurely 60-second stroll ofthe beach. We, the Organizing Committee and the Camp Staff, pledge to do our best to provideyou with a truly spectacular and unforgettable experience.

Trai Khai Pha 2012 is the first of its kind, both in concept and in magnitude. Our visionfor this camp is both tactical and strategic. Tactically, Trai Khai Pha 2012 is to provide alarge-scale gathering forum for Vietnamese Venturers in the nation, in off-years betweenour Thang Tien Jamborees, so that we can continue to explore wonderful and new outdoorsexperiences, to strengthen our sacred bond of Vietnamese brotherhood (and sisterhood) ofScouting, and to stoke the Scouting Fire within ourselves. Strategically, it is a VenturingSuper Camp to showcase our commitment to Venturing as a significant and sizable ethnicand cultural segment to be reckoned with. It is also an opportunity to showcase our youngup-and-coming leaders and to position them for future BSA leadership positions at the Council,Area, Regional, and National levels, in addition to their leadership positions in their respectiveunits.

Economic conditions are not at their best. In some ways, we are all affected by thepersistent downturn in the economy. To help defray the cost of camp for Venturers underfinancial hardship, a limited number of Camperships are available. A Campership applicationwill be included in the Camp Information package, and camperships will be decided on acase-by-case basis.
