The Spirit of Guadalupe Awards for 2020

Every year, to coincide with the Solemnity of Our Lady of Guadalupe, parishioners are chosen by the pastor and parish staff to be recognized with the “Spirit of Guadalupe Award.” This long-standing tradition acknowledges parishioners who are known to have been exemplary in their stewardship of service to our parish in the past year. This year we honor Troy & Mandy Chambers and Marty & Cindy Soper who have gone above and beyond in serving the parish and have done so with a spirit of dedication, positivity, and joy.

Troy & Mandy Chambers Troy & Mandy have been in the parish for 15 years. Troy is a Collison Estimator at Reed Chevrolet and Mandy is the Speech Language Pathologist for the Savannah School District. They are the proud parents of Avery, 15, and Camden, 13. Mandy said, “We love doing what we can to help on Sunday morning so our parish can continue to worship together in person.” Our parish is grateful to Mandy and Troy for all the ways they serve our parish with kindness and dedication.

Marty & Cindy Soper Marty is a retired school psychologist for the North-Central Iowa school districts and Cindy is a retired R.N. Upon retirement, they returned to their home town and have been members at OLOG for eight years. They are the parents of two adult children, Jason Soper & Megan Soper McHugh, and grandparents of five. Cindy said, “What we do is easy because the parish was well-prepared with proper protocols that have made it easy and safe for parishioners to return to Mass.” Marty said, “Once people learn the protocol routine, I think there’s comfort for people in being able to come to Mass.” Cindy added, “Actually, attending Mass at OLOG is one of the safer places in town to be, because we’re so well organized.” Our parish is grateful to Marty & Cindy for all their effort offered to us with generosity and kindness.

Excerpt from Bishop’s Johnston’s Pastoral Letter: Keeping the Lord’s Day

“Our thoughts in this present life should turn on the praise of God, because it is in praising God that we shall rejoice forever in the life to come; and no one can be ready for the next life unless he trains himself for it now.” Saint Augustine

Introduction

Why write a letter on the importance of Sunday? I had been thinking about the importance of Sunday well before the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, I had resolved to write this letter as we ended our diocesan Holy Year in January. But like many of you, during these past few months of the pandemic I have had time to think and reflect even more about what is truly important in life. Evidently, many other people have been doing the same. A recent syndicated column in the local newspaper noted polling results indicating that Americans have become more religious during the pandemic, including those who had previously chosen not to identify with religion. It observed that prior to the pandemic, many of those who had rejected religion sought meaning in other things. Then this observation: “The pandemic has abruptly stripped many of those things away—work, routines, the frivolities of life—leaving us all to contemplate our role in the world and the purpose of our existence.” The old “normal” was disrupted and much of what we were used to was suddenly removed, including the ability to worship together on Sunday at Mass. Imposing these restrictions was a very painful decision for me to make as your bishop. I am grateful for the sacrifices you have made during this time, and for the efforts you have made to be spiritually present. But as we begin to return to our public celebrations of Mass, I wish to invite all in our diocese to reflect more deeply on the value of Sunday, why God made it and what it means in the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ. This letter has three parts, each accompanied by a biblical story that illuminates the section’s theme. I wish to reflect on how we might celebrate Sunday well as both a time to worship and as a time for rest and the renewal of relationships.

The Altar Flowers have been lovingly provided by Bill and Kelli Cobb in memory of Robert and Zita Cobb Jr.

Faith In Action

Safety Protocols: At Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, w e have serious, significant and necessary protocols in place when attending Mass. All who enter and exit are to please wear their facial mask, and while walking in line to Holy Communion. Out of kindness and humility, we ask that all please practice “social distancing,” (6 feet between you and the person who does not live with you.) All four Missouri Bishops continue to dispense all Catholics from attending Mass at this time. W e will continue to livestream Holy Mass on Sunday at 8:30 a.m. so that those unable to physically attend may maintain a spiritual connection with Our Lady of Guadalupe. We are grateful for the cooperation of all!

May God bless all the families we have been privileged to assist. May they be safe and well as they celebrate the birth of our Savior and Lord.

The Food of the Month for January is pasta and/or Spaghetti Sauce. A favorite for people of all ages. Parents can add browned ground beef to the sauce for an even more nutritious meal. Please bring these items (or the non-perishable food of your choice) to church and place in the wooden food bins near all outer doors. Let’s join our local Catholic parishes food pantries to help feed those who are food insecure in our community, especially the children.
