Da Camera 15-16 Season Brochure.indd 1 3/26/15 4:05 PM
Dear Friends of Da Camera,
Music has the power to inspire, to entertain, to provoke, to fire the imagination. It can also evoke time and place. With Snapshots: Time and Place, Da Camera takes the work of pivotal musical figures as the lens through which to see a decade. Traversing diverse musical styles and over 600 years of human history, the concerts and multimedia performances of our 2015/16 season offer unique perspectives on our past and our present world.
Our all-star Opening Night, Snapshots of America, captures the essence of the American spirit and features world-renowned soprano Dawn Upshaw. Paris, city of light, returns to the Da Camera stage in a new multi-media production inspired by the writings of Marcel Proust.
Two fascinating explorations of film and music take us to opposite historical vistas: Carl Theodor-Dreyer's La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc takes us to medieval France, a voyage intensified by live performances of 15th-century music by the renowned Orlando Consort, and Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble Roomful of Teeth presents a brand new film oratorio, The Colorado, co-commissioned by Da Camera. The Grand Canyon's spectacular Colorado River Basin and the sustainability of our planet are the subjects of this visual and musical tour-de-force.
Other highlights include the 1940’s-50’s in the Soviet Union with pianist Ignat Solzhenitsyn performing Prokofiev: The War Years and joining me in a conversation about his father, Alexander Solzhenitsyn. The 1960's are the focus of two contrasting tributes to John Coltrane's landmark release in 1965: Azar Lawrence's Love Supreme 50th Anniversary Band with Jeff “Tain” Watts; and Imani Winds and Harlem String Quartet in Passion for Bach and Coltrane. And the 1980’s era of the reign of Michael Jackson takes on a new sound in the hands of the inimitable SFJAZZ Collective.
Beethoven, whose music defines the age of revolution and enlightenment, has a special place in the season. Beethoven Perspectives opens with the Elias Quartet in an all-Beethoven program, continues at the Menil Collection with Liszt's dazzling arrangement of Beethoven Symphony No. 5 performed by pianist Yuri Martynov, and concludes in the spring with two nights of Beethoven Violin and Piano Sonatas by the acclaimed Kristóf Baráti/Klára Würtz duo, whose recordings of the complete cycle have taken the music world by storm.
The diversity of the Latin jazz heritage is present: Arturo O'Farill leads the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, a second-generation institution in the Cuban jazz tradition; pianist Guillermo Klein and his stellar band los Guachos represent international innovation growing out of Argentinian roots. Those two ensembles and 2013 Monk competition winner Melissa Aldana and Crash Trio all make their Da Camera debuts.

Dawn Upshaw, soprano; Gilbert Kalish, piano; Sō Percussion; Richie Hawley, clarinet; Benjamin Kamins, bassoon; Da Camera Young Artists and additional guests
Join Da Camera for a festive all-star opening night featuring legendary soprano and five-time Grammy Award winner Dawn Upshaw, noted pianist Gilbert Kalish, the celebrated Sō Percussion and a stellar Da Camera Ensemble made up of leading Houston musicians and Da Camera Young Artists. Snapshots: Time and Place takes off with a compelling look at the American landscape as experienced through music.
Aaron Copland's landmark composition, Appalachian Spring , is a lyrical depiction of pioneer life that also expresses the bold American spirit of the 1940’s. Composed for a ballet choreographed by Martha Graham, Appalachian Spring instantly became a classic, defining a new American identity in music and dance. Charles Ives, Copland's great predecessor in American composition, drew on memories of his New England childhood to create his moving songs.
George Crumb’s Winds of Destiny looks back at the Civil War era. Crumb recasts nine songs and spirituals including Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory, When Johnny Comes Marching Home and Shenandoah, as intensely dramatic monologues for soprano, percussion quartet and amplified piano. A rare opportunity to hear Dawn Upshaw and her superb collaborators bring this powerfully evocative work to life.
“An astonishing performance from Upshaw...Her selfless, soul-baring performance was a career landmark.” — Financial Times

London’s Elias Quartet has quickly established itself as one of the most intense and vibrant quartets of its generation, fiercely devoted to the quartets of Beethoven. Don’t miss this program, with an outstanding work from each phase of the composer’s career, the kickoff to a four-concert Beethoven Perspectives series.
“Their performance was beautifully synchronized into one glorious interpretation of Beethoven’s String Quartet No 15…it moved this critic to tears, the human longing of Beethoven’s prayer being played with such sensitivity and vulnerability.”— The Herald, Scotland
“There's something intoxicating about the Elias String Quartet... Intensely absorbing, exquisitely considered...stunning.”

Now, Rothenberg revisits the great French author with a team of collaborators including tenor Nicholas Phan and Tony Award-winning lighting designer Jennifer Tipton. Music of the French belle epoque, imagery from paintings and period photography, and excerpts from the early 20th-century literary masterpiece, In Search of Lost Time, transport us to the dreamy realm of a recaptured past.

LA PASSION DE JEANNE D'ARC WITH ORLANDO CONSORTFriday, April 1, 2016, 8:00 PMCullen Theater, Wortham Theater Center
Carl Theodor Dreyer’s La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc is widely recognized as a silent film masterpiece, regularly appearing on lists of the top ten greatest films ever made. The world-renowned vocal ensemble Orlando Consort present an entirely new, carefully crafted soundtrack of music from the era in which the film is set. The intricate beauty of 15th-century works by Binchois and Dufay, together with animated motets and haunting plainsong, amplify the poignant depiction of medieval France. Dreyer’s portrayal of Joan of Arc is a film of extraordinary power, delivering an emotional experience that resonates as strongly today as it did in the 1920’s.
“The Orlando Consort’s performances are simultaneously ravishing and reverential.” — Los Angeles Times
“So extraordinary and otherworldly is this film’s power, you could believe you were watching the actual trial of Joan of Arc.” — The Washington Post

CRASH TRIO

Cullen Theater, Wortham Theater Center
In 2013, at age 24, Melissa Aldana
won the Thelonious Monk International
Jazz Competition, the first female
instrumentalist to ever win the illustrious contest. She has quickly
established herself as one of the fastest rising players in jazz today.
Her first Houston appearance features Pablo Menares on bass and
Francisco Mela on drums.
“You can hear Aldana and her group tap into the jazz tradition, but they
thrive in the hyperlinked global present.”— National Public Radio
“Melissa Aldana is brilliant, talented, skilled, innovative…
She owns the future.”— JazzTimes
“He seems in possession of a great,
almost ecstatic power, but he cares
about songs, and their shape and
melody always pulled him back to
earth. He controlled several mixtures
of things that could seem like
opposites: easy, melodic swing and
bottom-line seriousness; short-line
form and long-line expressiveness.
All this resulted in a controlled
energy that grew bigger than the
group itself. It works well in a club,
but this is a band you could imagine
on bigger stages.”— The New York Times

This program explores kindred musical souls separated by 140 years. Peter Lieberson and Schumann shared a tendency toward dreamy introspection and wild inventiveness. Schumann was a special inspiration to Lieberson, as in the poetic Remembering Schumann for cello and piano. His Rilke Songs were composed for his wife, the legendary mezzo Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. Metropolitan Opera mezzo soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano makes her Da Camera debut joined by brilliant cellist Colin Carr and acclaimed pianist Thomas Sauer.
“Her voice is radiant and intense” – The Boston Globe
Renowned for his opera and vocal works, when the great British composer Benjamin Britten began his third and final string quartet in 1975, he had not composed for the form in 30 years. Written after his last opera, Death in Venice — quoted in the work’s last movement — the quartet is an intensely moving autobiographical work, a final testament composed in Britten's last year. The renowned Brentano Quartet are joined by frequent collaborator Hsin-Yun Huang for Mozart’s masterpiece.
