NEWSLETTER December Governor’s Message

In December, Rotary celebrates the Family of Rotary―not just the Rotarians in our clubs, but their families and the friends and families of everyone associated with our Clubs―Interactors, Rotaractors, Foundation Alumni and just about everyone you can think of who helps our Rotary Clubs do what we do. In North America, as our thoughts turn toward the year-end holidays, we turn to family, so it is a good thing that Rotary does, too. As your club winds up for the holidays and then winds down for the end of the year, we should all “Reach Within” to think about how our clubs do involving the families of our members in all our activities―is Rotary something that our Rotarians do with family, or is it something that we’re asking them to do instead of family? It seems clear to me that if Rotary is to be continue to be successful it needs to be an integral part of our lives, and to do that we have to make our families part of everything we do as Rotarians.We also need to look beyond our own families, and begin to see our Interact Clubs and Rotaract Clubs as part of our big Club families. How about Foundation Alumni in our communities? Do we make them feel welcome in the Family of Rotary after their educational experiences are concluded? We need to―these are the people who should be our future Rotarians.

We provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through our fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.

Rotary is a worldwide network of inspired individuals who translate their passions into relevant social causes to change lives in communities.

This month, we hope you’ll indulge DG Tom and Newsletter Editor Vickie as we feature a few pictures from our Family of Rotary―the Rotary Club of Bishop Sunrise!

December is also a very good time to think about what is perhaps the most important celebration of the Family of Rotary―our International Convention. This year, registration fees and hotels in beautiful and exotic Bangkok, Thailand, are a great bargain―and even airfares aren’t that bad. This will be a tremendous year to meet and experience our worldwide family at the Convention.RI Conventions aren’t just a great way to meet our extended Family of Rotary―they are also a great way to make your club better and stronger. In all of my conversations with senior Rotary leaders, the one idea that they come back to over and over is that the single best way to strengthen a club is to make sure that the club’s President Elect goes to the International Convention (and, yes, that almost always involves the club helping to pay the President Elect’s way). Our annual President Elect Training Seminar in February is great for teaching some of the nuts and bolts of running a club, but nothing beats an International Convention for inspiration and exposure to Rotary from all over the world. I know that attending my first International Convention in Salt Lake City opened my eyes to the world of Rotary and inspired me to want to do great things within our organization―and it was a ton of fun!So, spend some time this month and celebrate the Family of Rotary. Make the Family of your Club a vital part of what you do―and take a few minutes to register for the International Convention and get ready to meet the vast, fascinating, and inspiring extended Family of Rotary.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIAColonel James “Big Jim” Wheeler Davidson spent two and one-half years, starting in 1928, traveling from Turkey to Hong Kong, establishing Rotary Clubs from Cairo, through India, Sri Lanka (then known as Ceylon), Burma, Malaya, Singapore and many other places. He was known as Rotary’s “missionary extraordinaire”―and through his entire adventure he was accompanied and supported by his wife Lillian and daughter Marjory.

Group Study Exchange (A program of The Rotary Foundation)Well, we’ve made it past the first hurdle! We have a Team Leader for our Group Study Exchange with Veracruz, Mexico. It is my pleasure to announce Alice Muntean of the Calabasas Club as this year’s Team Leader. Alice comes with a huge amount of experience when it comes to GSE. She has been involved with GSE as long as I can remember, even being the Alternate Team Leader for the trip to Brazil with Marta Brown and myself. She has always been there to coordinate the SFV portion of our past exchanges and has stepped up whenever called upon. Congratulations Alice!

Now all we need is a team to send with her!

Please send me your applicants as soon as possible! I’ve spoken to a few clubs and they’ve mentioned that they have a few folks in mind. Let’s get those applications in! I’d like to start training the team in January, so time is of the essence. Please get me your applications by the end of December!

Your Rotary Pin – Wear it Daily with Pride

Remember the day you were inducted into Rotary and how proud you felt when you received your Rotary Pin? You beamed with pride knowing your Rotary pin would identify you as a Rotarian belonging to an organization of influence and prestige. While many members wear their pin proudly, too many have fallen out of the habit of wearing it everyday.

The Rotary pin was designed as a gear wheel to be worn by Rotarians as a lapel pin. The design has evolved into our official emblem. It’s worn exclusively by Rotarians, members of a Rotary Club. They are business and professional leaders, united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotarians venerate our motto, “Service above Self”.

Receiving your Rotary Pin is a significant step in your transition from citizen to Rotarian. Wearing your pin makes a statement that you have been called to a special purpose to serve others. Service is more than an ideal in Rotary – it is a responsibility of membership, nourished by friendship and fellowship that grows within the breasts of its members. Rotarians are dedicated to the Ideal of Service: thoughtfulness and helpfulness to others.

Honor Rotary by wearing your Rotary Pin everyday so that everyone you meet will know you are a Rotarian, and when asked about it you can tell them what Rotary is and what Rotary does. Well, the year is almost half over! 

Here's a simple checklist for review:

Has your club had an activity with the sponsoring Rotary Club?

What about a local service project?  (One club suggested a "Pets and People" food drive---pet food for the local shelter and people food for the local pantry).

Have you held a fundraiser?

All of the above are part of the requirements for Clubs to receive a Presidential Citation for Interact Clubs.  I'll have forms at the January 21 District meeting at Woodbury College.

What meeting you ask?  

More detailed info is coming, but there will be a break out session for Interacters and their advisors following the general session with guest speaker on Ethics.

So, please let your clubs know---and set up carpools.  There will be breakfast available, and a special $10 cost for Interacters.

We'll have a couple of guest speakers on projects, update on Interact Alliance activities, and also a sharing time.

And if you are still forming a new club----bring your potential officers!

Please email me if you are planning on attending, and how many young folks are planning to come, just so that we can have enough handouts (and food).

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIAWhile women were not invited into Rotary until 1987 (officially, that is) Rotary Clubs have long depended on the spouses of their members to get things done. For many years, spouses were known as “Rotary Anns”, honoring Ann Brunnier, the wife of 1914 Rotary Club of San Francisco Club President Henry Brunnier. Ann was the only woman on the long train trip to the 1914 Convention in Houston. In keeping with the Rotary tradition of using first names, the Rotarians called her Ann, and then “Rotary Ann” and then quickly Rotary spouses all became “Rotary Anns”. Now we should have some Rotary Andys!

As we approach the holiday season, I give thanks for all of you who are helping make our future bright by generously sharing your time and energy with our young people.  And you do it without "pontificating on your own youth experiences or ideas"!

Rotary Leadership Institute Comes to Districts 5260 and 5280Districts 5260 and 5280 and the Southern California-Nevada Division of the Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) are pleased to be bringing the Rotary Leadership Institute Part I course to Southern California. The initial Part I training will be held all day on January 7, 2012 at the Hacienda Hotel in El Segundo, California. RLI is a world-wide grassroots training program designed to strengthen club level leadership. ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIAHave your heard about Rotary Community Corps? They are a part of the Family of Rotary, too―started back in 1986 by RI President M.A.T. Caparas. A Rotary Community Corps (RCC) is a Rotary Club sponsored group on non-Rotarians who want to help their own community by conducting service projects. Rotarians provide professional expertise, guidance, organizational structure, and some material assistance for the RCC. The RCC contributes the man power (or woman power) and knowledge of community needs to help their own community.

District 5260 Joins with the Montecito Club of District 5240 to Provide Aid to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

For the past two years, Dr. Victoria Bentley, a retired psychologist with the Montecito Rotary Club of District 5240, has worked tireless to establish and fund several centers in the Eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to serve the needs of young at-risk women and victims of a brutal war which has ravaged the DRC for 13 years.

The Ushindi Project has established centers in the city of Bukavu where these women and girl survivors are rehabilitated through medical care, food, trauma counseling, vocational training, education, business training, family planning, and income producing projects. In the new phase of this project, funding will provide primary education for 50 students and high school education for 50 girls. The project will also supply goats, chickens and guinea hens to help these women and their families rise out of poverty by providing the training and resources to earn a sustainable income.

The host club is the Rotary Club of Bukavu, which has been very successful over the past two years in ensuring that the projects are carried out as intended. Dr. Bentley travels to the centers to introduce new vocational training programs and to provide trauma counseling. The Rotary Clubs of North Hollywood and Burbank Sunrise and their members responded to an urgent request for support by contributing $4000 for the latest phase of the Ushindi Project, which in turn will be matched by the Rotary Foundation upon approval of the application, resulting in $8000 of the $24,400 required for the grant. Dr. Bentley is extremely gratified by the support that District 5260 has shown for this project. A special thanks goes to Jim Miceli, Lee Stacy and Tom Hardy for their support and guidance in optimizing the contribution from our District and meeting a very tight deadline.

Around 5260—What’s Up with Your Club?

The Rotary Club of Burbank organized a food drive on November 19, 2011 to benefit the Burbank Temporary Aid Center. Community Service in Action!

Flocks of pink flamingos have been reported roaming from lawn to lawn in and around Woodland Hills―but they only seem to land on the lawns of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of Woodland Hills. It seems that for a modest contribution a team of crack flamingo re-locaters will solve the problem and move them to another home.

Rotary Club of North East LA rockin’ it in the Eagle Rock Veteran’s Day Parade!

The Rotary Club of Northridge Chatsworth sponsored a successful blood drive on October 16, 2011. Former Dodger great Lee Lacy was on hand to help promote the event and sign autographs, and a big cheer for the Chatsworth High School Interact Club for their help!

John Osterlund, General Manager of The Rotary Foundation will update us on how Rotarians are changing lives around the world and provide a preview of Future Vision, Rotary Foundation’s new grant model to support club and district humanitarian and education projects. Starting in 2013 all districts will transition to the new grant model which offers two types of grants. District grants are block grants that enable clubs and districts to address immediate needs in their communities and abroad. Global grants offer

opportunities to participate in strategically focused, high-impact activities within the six areas of focus. Global grants range from $30,000 to $400,000.

Born in Oak Park, Illinois, John grew up in Sebring, Florida. After graduating from the University of South Florida with a B.A. in Political Science, he became interested in the Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship program. John was awarded a Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship for the academic year 1987-88. With his Scandinavian heritage it was to John's advantage that he was placed at the University of Stockholm.

As the General Manager of The Rotary Foundation, John oversees the operations of four divisions: PolioPlus; Fund Development; Future Vision Pilot Operations; and, TRF Programs. In 2002-03, John served as the Associate Director of the Foundation’s US$80 million Polio Eradication Fundraising Campaign -- a campaign conducted in one year which raised more than US$135 million to further Rotary’s goal of eradicating polio. In 2006-07, The Rotary Foundation was successful in raising more than US$130 million. Currently, John is managing Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge to End Polio Now.
