Writing the history ofQuezon City is not an easy

task. It involves intensiveresearch to all written infor-mation about the City.

The QuezonCity Public Library, beingthe repository of all Que-zon City facts and figures, conceived the idea of con-solidating and updatingQuezon City informationfor the use of all research-

ers especially the futuregenerations.

Data of past mayorswere taken from the booksof three distinguished au-thors, Crisostomo, Ca-runungan and Alvir for thepart of the past mayors, while data from Mayors

Simon to Belmonte weretaken from souvenir pro-grams, accomplishmentreports, state of the cityaddress, newspapers andmagazines, history booksand other write ups per-taining to Quezon City.

Three distinguishedauthors have their ownpiece of story on the his-

tory of Quezon City, Isa-belo T. Crisostomo, CelsoAl. Carunungan and AngelS. Alvir. This book on His-tory of Quezon City wastaken from the consoli-dated works of these threeauthors, and was further

updated by the City Libraryup to the present admini-

stration, the Herbert M.Bautista Administration.

Angel S. Alvir wrotehis version of Quezon Cityhistory, “Compared to ahuman being, Quezon Cityis a child in its early infancyand has no history tospeak of except that of theman who founded it andthe events which led to its

creation or attended itsearly existence, and thesocial and political fermentat the time of its creation.”

it is well that thehistory of its creation anddevelopment be writtenwhen the details of its earlyexistence are still clear inthe memory of living per-sons who were there withthe founder when hedreamed, designed, andbuilt the City. “Time slipsquietly, the founder’s rankis thinning, and before longthings and incidents con-nected with the city’s crea-tion and development willforever be lost to history, itmust be recorded.”

Isabelo T,Crisostomo wrote “QuezonCity: 1954-1967”. He at-tempted to put togethersome facts about the for-mation of Quezon Citywhile these were still avail-able and fresh then. Much

of his researches were derived from City Hall record

and from newspapersmagazines and old souvenir programs. It was MayoAmoranto who gave himthe idea to write about Quezon City. But he limitethe discussion of the sub

ject from 1954-1967 bcause of “great timeneeded to dig up old references and collate pertinen

data.Celso Al. Carunun

gan, wrote the boo“Quezon City: A Saga oProgress”, wherein hwent into great pains to diinto the intricate but pleasurable details of the firsyears of Quezon City. This mind, no one beforhad ever dug enough t

discover these. Perhapsaccording to him, no onsaw the need for themthen. But, in the face othe relentless and continuing progress of this marveous metropolis, it is propeand fitting that we turback to that wonderful; beginning of Quezon Cityand draw from it some les

sons, learn some truthabout how this city camabout.

FromManuelQuezontoMayorTomasMoratoto

Mayor

HerbertBautista(1939-pre-

sent)

“What is clear in today’s present administrationis that to make Quezon City continue to become the mostoutstanding and one of the best cities in the country and to fulfillunfulfilled visions, plans, dreams and projects.”

VOLUME 5 . ISSUE 4

Thus, to up-date the books preparedby these three authors, the

Quezon City Public Librarystaff painstaking continuedthe research on the con-tinuing progress of the city, compiled and updated allrelevant data pertaining tothe Quezon City’s officials, their numerous accom-plishments, particularly oninfrastructure projects thatdefinitely gave the status of

Quezon City as a premiercity.

People of the Citymust take pride to havemayors who perseveredin fulfilling the dreams andvisions of the Founder ofQuezon City, Pres. ManuelLuis Molina Quezon, from

Morato in 1939 to Bautista, the present administration. Each of these mayors,

have their own ways of ful-filling these dreams. Theyworked hard to at leastcontribute to the progressof the city, though, they ex-perienced many obstaclesalong the way.

What is clear in to-day’s present administra-tion is that to make Que-zon City continue to be-come the most outstandingand one of the best citiesin the country and to fulfillunfulfilled visions, plans, dreams and projects.

This book also con-tains the Quezon City Offi-cials from 1939 to present, from mayors, vice mayors, congressmen, councilors,department/office headsand task forces. Although, the data may not be thatcomplete, great efforts ofresearch and compilationof data by the team wereexerted to make this bookas complete as possiblepertaining to Quezon City.

Our recognition wegive to the late Mr. Ben O.Flores, the editor of the for-mer Capitol standard, whoat one time gave his com-mentaries to the booksabout the history of Que-

zon City. That one of hiswrite ups wished that“someday write an update of

Quezon City History” to beentitled “Quezon City: A Sagaof Continuing Progress.”Though the writer of thishumble book is not a veteranwriter or author of any pub-lished books, she tried herbest with the help of theQCPL Staff to come out withthis material.

That whoever may

write again an updated his-tory of Quezon City may theyfind this book useful.

This book will never bepossible without the supportprimarily of the City MayorHerbert Bautista, the City Li-brarian, Emelita Villanueva, who persevered in its publi-cation, Ms. Cynthia Tolado,Asst., the staff who gave theirbest during the researchstage, Ms. Fe Gomez, Estrel-lita Perez, Donna Estoque,Ana Martinez, Jenny Leoncio, and indexers Prima Alabataand Jenny Adajo.

“He allows painfulsituations to come into

your life, and accordingto Fenelon, “He does

this for your benefit.”When you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. 1 Peter

God Loves You! The Bible says, "God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall

not perish, but have eternal life"

I would like toshare some devotionalthoughts from God’swords quoted from “OurDaily Bread” January toDecember 2012, specifi-cally from February 4entitled WHEN WE’REWRONGED”.

It’s natural towant to defend ourselvesagainst injustice and tostrike back. But if we’requiet and peaceful whenothers mistreat and per-secute us, we are re-sponding in a Christlikeway. God wants to developin us qualities that areunnatural for us. Anyonecan be patient when eve-rything’s going his or herway. The greater virtueis to remain calm and con-

trolled under provocation(1 Peter 2:20).

Fenelon, a 17th-century theologian, put itthis way: “Don’t be so up-set when evil men andwomen defraud you. Letthem do as they please, just seek to do the will ofGpd… Silent peace andsweet fellowship with Godwill repay you for everyevil thing done against you.Fix your eyes on God.” Heallows painful situations tocome into your life, andaccording to Fenelon, “Hedoes this for your bene-fit.”

For our benefit? In-

deed as we respond to in-

 justice in a Christlike way,

our anxiety, insecurity,

and pessimism will be

transformed into tran-

quility, stability, and

hope.

Why do we lash out

when we’re mistreated?

Why are we so quick to

defend ourselves or toseek revenge? Is it not

that we placed too much

value on our own comfort

and rights? If so we

must pray, echoing on the

words of Augustine.

“Heal me of this lust of

mine to always vindicate

myself.” - David Roper
