Bronze
Silver
Gold
VolunteeringVolunteering is simple. It’s about choosing to give time to do something useful without getting paid.
Volunteer individually or as part of a team.
Examples
• Coaching at a football club• Being a weekly visitor to an older person• Raising money for a charity• Peer mentoring at school• Youth club leader• Volunteering at school (being a prefect counts!)
PhysicalAnything that requires a sustained level of physical energy and involves doing an activity can count – as long as you show interest and improvement over time
You can use a team sport or individual fitness programme
Examples
• Playing football for a local team• Dance class such as zumba • Joining a free running group• Gym• Swimming
SkillsSomething old, something new – it doesn’t matter.
Improve an existing skill or develop a new one.
Examples
• Learn to draw• After school drama classes• Learning a musical instrument • Learn a new language• Cooking
Expedition
Planning, training for and completing an adventurous journey as part of a team.
Before your expedition, you will need to identify your expeditionaim, mode of travel and location.
Examples
• Planning a route in Epping Forest by foot to take a series of photographs to use in a calendar.
• Exploring team dynamics and skills with a different team leader each day as you explore the Chilterns.
• Planning an expedition on horseback in the countryside.
Who is going and when?
•Bronze (year 9) • Thursday 20th – Friday 21st June = PRACTICE
• 16th – 18th July = QUALIFYING
Timings• Day of departure
• Arrive at school at 7am. • Check kit• Make sure everything is waterproof• Repack bags to make them more comfortable (!)• Distribute group equipment.
• Leave to head to Sainsbury’s around 8am for food shop.
• Head to starting point using the minibus / coach.
What will I be doing?• Walking for about 4.5 hours (Bronze) each day.
• Navigating your way around the countryside using maps and compasses.
• This is a route that you will have made up yourselves and that will have been checked by teachers.
• Checking in with staff members at several points during the day.
Where will I be walking?• We will be starting at Downe Scout Activity Centre.
• We will be walking on various routes around Downe and Biggin Hill.
• We will then end at Downe campsite where you will be camping.
• On the following day you will be doing another circular route from the campsite.
Evenings• Setting up your tents.
• Cooking your meals / cleaning up and free time.
• Group gathering.
• In bed by 10pm(!)
What equipment does the school provide? • Tents• Roll mats• Sleeping bags• Stoves• Rucksacks• Compasses• Maps
What do I need to bring?• Walking boots / sensible walking
shoes• Clothes• Jumpers• (Flip flops)• Torch (preferably head torch)• Water bottle (2L)• Sun cream • Thick socks• Waterproof jacket
• Bowl• Knife, fork, spoon• Mug• (Towel)• Wash kit • (Playing cards)• (Book)• (First aid kit)• (Hat)• (Penknife) • (Pillow)
What do I need to do now?• If you would like to do the Duke of Edinburgh, you need to
complete the form and get your parents to sign the consent form.
• This needs to be done BY THIS FRIDAY (7th June) so that I can get you put on the eDofE, book the campsites etc.
• I need £30 in cash by Monday 10th June. This is to cover the cost of your meals.
• Remember, the dates are: Thursday 20th – Friday 21st June = PRACTICE, 16th – 18th July = QUALIFYING
