OverviewThe Department of Education's digiLearn portal is available for all Victorian government teachers to access innovative online digital learning resources.

digiLearn allows teachers to access and download learning objects and digital resources. Teachers are able to search online by keyword to discover thousands of different digital learning resources.

What are Digital Learning Resources (DLRs)? (DLRs) are a collection of small multimedia learning objects and digital resources that are used to introduce, develop or reinforce curriculum concepts.

Learning objects (L)chunks of digital material (eg. graphics, text, audio, animation, interactive tools) designed to engage and motivate student learning.

Digital resources (R)digital content comprising single assets (eg. moving images, photos, audio files). In contrast to learning objects, which have in-built instructional design, they can be used in a range of ways to suit needs.

Using digilearn

To find a DLR within digilearn, you will need to do a search. You can do a quick search or an advanced search. The quick search will find more resources but the advanced search is better for finding specific resources for your needs.

Advanced search

In an advanced search you can type in key words, VELS path or the level. The more general you are with your search terms, the more resources will be listed.

Using the resources

Once you have selected a resource from your search and click on it, a summary page of the resource will appear. This gives an overview of it and a button which you can click to get a preview.

Giving students access

If you like the resource and would like to give your students access to it you need to click on the Download Student Link which is highlighted in the orange area. You then need to provide this shortcut to your students who can open it in an internet browser. They will need a computer with an internet connection.

You may want to create a Word Document with a series of links on it and a brief description of what each link leads to. This allows students to access the correct links for a given activity.

Downloading resourcesIf you would like to download multiple resources and save them on the server, this can be done using the Download Cart tab in the top left corner if the screen.

Once you have found a resource that you would like to download, click on the ‘Add to Cart’ button at the bottom of the screen and then it can be downloaded.

eLearning ICT ShowcaseAnother really good resource which is part of DigiLearn is the ICT Showcase. This has quite an extensive collection of examples of how DigiLearn resources are being used at schools. There are video’s, podcasts, teacher reflections, audio files and documents that will help you to incorporate digital learning resources into your classroom.

Your turn……You now have some time to have a look at digilearn and browse through the resources that are available. You may like to look for links that relate to your current integrated topic or maths or literacy activities that you are planning on running. You might like to create your own Word Document with links and brief summaries which can be accessed by students in your classroom.
