Harvard-educated historian Carter G. Woodson is credited with creating BlackHistory Month.Woodson got the idea in 1915 after attending a celebration in Illinois of the 50thanniversary of the 13th Amendment, which (under Abraham Lincoln's presidency)abolished slavery in the U.S.This month was chosen because of the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln on February12th and Frederick Douglass on February 14th.Celebrated for years, President Gerald Ford declared February "Black HistoryMonth" in 1976. He urged citizens to "seize the opportunity to honor the too-oftenneglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavorthroughout our history."

Afroculinaria is a food blog authored by Michael W. Twitty.Michael’s work is a blend of two distinct brands: TheAntebellum Chef and Kosher/Soul. Antebellum Chef represents the vast number of unknownBlack cooks across the Americas that were essential in thecreation of the creole cuisines of Atlantic world. It is important that we not only honor the Ancestors butprovide a lifeline to contemporary communities and peopleof color looking for a better life in the new economy, a wayout of the health and chronic illness crisis, and a way toreduce the vast food deserts that plague many of ourcommunities. To honor the food past and provide for thefood future is what Michael calls, "culinary justice."
