December 30, 2018 December 23, 2018 The Holy Family of Jesus, Fourth Sunday of Advent Mary and Joseph
St Thomas the Apostle Church Page 2 Peoria Heights, Illinois
On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of St.
Thomas Parish and School, we wish you and
your family every blessing at the Birth of Our
Lord.
With Christmas coming soon, it is good for us to
reflect with gratitude on all that the Lord has
done for us. More important than any other gift
we could receive is the birth of the
Messiah. Jesus reminds us of the profound love
that God has for us. God loved us so much that
he sent his son into the world, not to condemn,
but that the world might be saved through Him.
We also reflect on the humble way that Jesus
comes to us, born not only as a little child, but
also appearing to us in such humble, lowly, and
poor circumstances. What has been hidden
from the learned and the clever has been
revealed to the childlike. Blessed are we if we
recognize that we are all children of our
Heavenly Father as we come humbly to adore
before the birth of the Christ.
We pray for safety for all those who are
traveling. We give thanks for the gift of family,
and I hope that you may all be blessed with the
gift of peace from the Prince of Peace who has
come to us.
Wherever you may be in the coming weeks,
take time to honor Jesus on Christmas, and to
also remember the Blessed Mother on January
1st as we celebrate Mary, Mother of God.
-Msgr. Gray

Fourth Sunday of Advent On the Fourth Sunday of Advent, we remember
the Blessed Mother and honor her along with St.
Elizabeth. This Sunday, we celebrate with Mary,
the mother of Jesus, and Elizabeth, the mother
of John the Baptist, as we recall the mysteries of
the Visitation.
In just a few short days since lighting the fourth
candle of the Advent Wreath, we will honor the
Lord’s birth at Christmas. Christmas, along with
Easter, is one of the holiest days of our liturgical
year. It is the culmination of all our preparations
during the Advent season. The fundamental
mystery of Christmas is the Incarnation: The
God has become man and taken on our
human condition. The Word was made flesh
and has dwelt among us. All the prophets
taught us to expect the God-with-us
Emmanuel, but no one could have predicted
how Jesus would marvelously come so close to
us in this mystery. We can only stand in wonder
and awe at the plan of God’s love that unfolds
before us on Christmas.
Although the Christmas season is short, it is filled
with many important feast days. During the
Octave of Christmas, we celebrate the Holy
Family on Sunday. Jesus did not come into the
world in isolation, but with the cooperation of
Mary and Joseph. The feast of the Holy Family
reminds us of the importance of our families
and of our bonds with one another in our
community.
On the Octave of Christmas on January 1st, we
celebrate Mary, Mother of God, a Holy Day of
Obligation. This feast traditionally marked the
eighth day on which a male child was
circumcised according to Jewish ritual and
given his name. On this day, we honor Mary
who is so closely connected to Jesus that she
can rightly be called the Mother of God. This
title is connected to the Incarnation, since Mary
gave birth to Jesus who is truly and inseparably
both God and man.
On the 12th day of Christmas, we celebrate the
Epiphany in which we honor the revelation of
Christ to the world. The word Epiphany refers to
the light that “shines forth” which occurs as
Jesus reveals himself more and more. The
Epiphany is a time to celebrate various
moments when Jesus was revealed, but
especially the appearance of the three wise
men who offered their gifts to the Christ child.
The Christmas season ends the follow week as
we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord and the
beginning of his public ministry. In this
celebration, we remember especially the most
important work of John the Baptist who was
chosen for this special task.
Christmas Gifts At this time of Christmas many of our parishioners give their Christmas
offering to support the parish. We are most grateful for your generosity.
If you intend for your gift to be given to the clergy please indicate that
clearly on your envelope or check. Your gifts are very much
appreciated. However, please do not bring in food items, as we do not
want these gifts to go to waste.

Thanks from St Vincent de Paul Society, 2018 The St. Vincent DePaul group continues to grow because poverty is
forever present. The group currently has 36 members who are willing to
give of their time and energy to see clients in distress, to staff the food
pantry, and to support the Coming Together to get Ahead (CTGA)
program. We try to alleviate the poor’s needs thru both short- and long-
term solutions. We are dependent on the contributions of our parishioners
every month.
Here is a summary of our activities from October 1 2017 through
September 30, 2018:
1)The Food Pantry served 1500 families (average family size 3, a total of
4,089 people) 1500 volunteer hours were spent stocking shelves and
distributing food twice weekly. Food sources include the Midwest Food
Bank and the Peoria Food Bank; In addition, to assure healthy food
sources, on occasion, we shop locally. This cost $8,955. We are ever
cognizant of high-quality nutrition for our clients.
2)Client visits; historically this has been the core of our efforts. Every
request we get from the diocesan office, we see , mostly in a home visit
by 2 people. There were 257 visits this year, affecting 666 people. Our
visits give us a chance to see their circumstances and evaluate needs.
They usually call for financial reasons (rent, utility payments, etc.) We
commonly detect financial, educational, training, or other needs. We
look for community resources to assist them. A few of our clients will have
no furniture- children sleeping on the floor, etc. Some are at risk for
eviction, loss of utilities. They are a step away from homelessness.
Expenses associated with these visits were $67,606 over this period
3)CTGA is a recent Vincentian effort to encourage more of our clients to
make sustained changes in their life, to get up out of poverty. We look for
motivated people who have been in distress and are willing to study their
problem. Sessions last 16 weeks, Mentor volunteers are recruited from the
Vincentian conferences.
We try to use our knowledge of resources available to help our clients
attain some stability in their lives. We are not always successful. However,
in the Spirit of St Vincent DePaul, we continue trying
We sincerely thank you for your continued giving for the Vincentian
cause. Your donations this year totaled $79,304.

Opportunity There is good news if you have reached age 70
½ and you would like to help (your parish,

government requires you to take out a certain
amount each year and be subject to federal
tax. However, the law allows you to donate this
amount directly to (your parish, school, ministry)
