New Features at the Pioneer Museum in Glasgow The Pioneer Museum staff is anxious to welcome more local visitors (and their out-of-town company, too) to the ever-expanding facility. Besides the many long-standing displays, improvement and additions will impress. Greeting the visitor upon entering the museum is a collection of memorabilia from the past on preservation of foods. Typical of this time of year canning and preserving garden harvest was a necessity for many families. An exquisite marble collection, courtesy of Charles Plant, is on loan this summer just inside the museum. The collection includes clay marbles, hand and machine made and blown ones. Marbles bring back fond memories of springtime rituals as kids took to the playground, drew circles and dug holes to win the prized ones. If you hanker to sit a bit in the library to listen to the strains of the 100+ years old music box, you could thumb through and revel in the two newest photograph volumes of Montana scenes, particularly from Northeast Montana, , that makes clear just why Montana is a vacation destination for many. Jerry Jacobson is the photographer. Across the street to the south, cement sidewalks have been added along 8th Avenue in front of the Machine Yard and also inside the yard improving access to the treasures kept there. A printed guide helps in identification. We recently received two new children’s books about Roadie the Ranch Dog written by former Saco resident Scott Haynes. The stories and illustrations introduce you to Roadie’s typical day on the ranch and many of his friends. Museum hours are 1:00 – 5:00 Tuesdays – Fridays.

Interpretive Center,” says Mark Good, a field director for the Montana Wilderness Association. “We looked forward to celebrating a historic milestone at the historic theater, but it makes more sense for all the activities to be centered at a single spot.” Saturday’s activities will kick off with a hike to Sand Arroyo, the remote area off Highway 24 in McCone County managed by the BLM and CMR National Wildlife Refuge that’s known for its unusual landforms and fossil resources. Volunteers with the Montana Wilderness Association will lead the hike, which is free and open to everyone. In order to participate, register at www.wildmontana.org. Hikers will be treated to a barbecue upon their return to the Interpretive Center. The Interpretive Center will be open all afternoon and evening for the art exhibit of local landscapes, which is being organized and curated by Wheatgrass Arts and Gallery in Glasgow. The evening’s entertainment begins with a reading from Tami Haaland, a native of Rudyard who is Montana’s

current Poet Laureate. Following the reading, Jack Gladstone will take the stage for a free concert. One of Montana’s most popular performers, Gladstone has produced 15 critically acclaimed recordings. The weekend concludes with a hike to Burnt Lodge Wilderness Study Area, located in the Missouri River Breaks southwest of Glasgow. For more about the weekend’s activity, call Mark Good in Great Falls at 406-453-9434. The Jack Gladstone tour is sponsored by The Wilderness Society, U.S. Forest Service, Montana Back Country Horsemen, Coalition to Protect the Rocky Mountain Front, and Montana Wilderness Association.
