NicosiaA visit inside the 1000-year old capital’sVenetian city walls blends the past andpresent. Like the old Berlin, Nicosia – withits 220,000 inhabitants – is divided intotwo. Life here is like the contents of acocktail shaker – a fascinating mixture ofthe Persians, Assyrians and Egyptians whohave ruled here. Fine, white sand and clear water – it islovely to bathe in Cyprus.

Note that a red flag means bathing isforbidden, a yellow flag means that bathingis at your own risk while a green flagmeans go ahead. There are 52 blue flagbeaches in Cyprus.

Grecian BayA 2-km long sandy beach starts at theharbour in the town of Ayia Napa. Herethere are also exciting caves to explore.

Nissi BeachThis beach, which is popular with youngpeople, is 3.5 km from the centre of AyiaNapa’s and is a lively, though relaxing,alternative. Here you can find all kinds ofwatersports, bungy jumping and volleyball.

Go for handicraft such as lace andceramics if you want to shop in Cyprus.Naturally, you can buy from shops andmarkets in the towns, but anyone whovisits to the villages, where much ofCyprus’ handicrafts are made, also has thechance to familiarise themselves withCyprus’ original handicraft culture. Andwith villagers who are happy to show theirwork. In many villages, and in the island’scultural areas, handiwork is also sold atbetter prices than in the towns. Otheritems which can be worth going for arespectacles, shoes, leather, suitcases andgold which are cheaper than in mostEuropean cities.

In tourist resorts such as Ayia Napa, theshops stay open all day during the week,but in towns such as Nicosia and Larnaca –which offer a wide range of shopping – theshops close in the middle of the day.

In Larnaca the shopping street is along thebeach promenade Beachfront. In Paphosthe shops are in Kato Paphos.
