This work is devoted to the memory of Claudine Andréoli, researcher of INRA Claudine Andréoli was a remarkable French scientist in the field of phytopatholoy, an impressive personality, extremely communicative, approachable, hospitable and human. She was an enthusiastic re-searcher, who participated with us to all the European research pro-jects on cypress. “Adieu, Claudine” from all the friends of cypress, who are grateful to you.

1. Forward: Cypress, a flexible tree for the protection of the landscape, economy, history and culture of most of the Mediterranean countries subject to fire risks Paolo Raddi, Coordinator of P.O. Med “CypFire”, Institute of Plant Protection, CNR, Italy

As individuals and as a society we must take responsibility for our forests and ensure that appropriate fire prevention measures are ob-served. Over the past 30 years, the number of fires and burnt areas in 5 southern countries (Portugal, Spain, France, Italy and Greece) have shown a tendency towards an increase in the number of fires and a decrease in the surfaces of burnt areas. Why have forest devastation and the loss of life caused by fires con-tinued to be so high? What has gone wrong after decades of investi-gation into the causes of fires, after having put so much effort into fire prevention and fire fighting at local, regional and community levels? Something has apparently gone wrong in the fire manage-ment sector. We now need to investigate the precise reasons for this failure. One of the most important causes of forest fires is human in origin. It is necessary to make civilian society aware of the value of our for-ests and their resources and, in the same time, to indicate the bene-fits of their conservation. It is very important to reduce the number of fires, because as has been demonstrated experimentally, fires in Tuscany have great effects on the reduction in the production of wood, on the rural economy, on the attractions of the landscape, and also on the quality of the air. An increase in CO2, CO, NMHC, PM10, NOx and NH3 has been observed as a local result of wildfires in Tuscany. Since June 2010 the “Med Operational Programme” has financed the demonstrative project CypFire (“Fire-breaks constituted by canker-resistant clones of cypress: a practicable, ecological and economic solution for forest protection against fire risks in the Mediterranean countries”). The main objective of CypFire is to demonstrate that a cypress barrier can prevent the start and progression of “surface” fires, reduce the damages to the forest vegetation, and affect human activities, the landscape, and the quality of living. CypFire has also another aim: to convince the population and to make it aware that the protection of our forest trees against fire can be dealt within an economic and ecological way by setting up barriers consisting of sev-eral rows of cypresses.

In this pamphlet, CypFire has attempted to inform both public and private institutions on :

• the polyvalent functions of cypress trees in Tuscany; • the economic importance of the presence of cypresses in the Tus-

can landscape, by presenting a case study on the farm-holiday (agritourism) business in Tuscany;

• as well as to justify the reasons for evaluating the impact of cy-press plantations on the rural economy, and for establishing a connection between the rural economy and the use of cypresses for protection against forest-fires.

One of the CypFire objectives is to speed up the conversion of re-search findings into successful processes and services. In forestry, a new solution is accepted by users only if they are convinced that it is feasible in given sectors of forestry, more economical than the pre-sent methods, and has a positive or very low environmental impact. This brochure tries to demonstrate that the cypress is an important tree in the Mediterranean regions for the protection of natural re-sources, for the promotion of the tourism business, and for the pres-ervation of the beauty of the landscape. These functions for cypress trees represent a profitable increase in the rural economy. This eco-nomic increase means that the rural populations can remain and live better in the countryside. The presence of these trees is very useful for defending their territories against natural risks, such as erosion and fires.
