PhD students Supervised 1. Dmytro Kyryliuk from Kiev, Ukraine, started his PhD in March 2015. Thesis Title: 'Combining

Ocean colour RS and hydrological parameters for evaluating the effect of terrestrial run-off on coastal ecology' (funded by ESA, SNSB and 50% by the SU Faculty). Main Supervisor: S. Kratzer; Co-supervisors: Prof. Steve Lyon (Department of Physical Geography, SU) and Dr Michelle Mc Crackin (Baltic Eye, SU). Half Time Seminar passed: April 07, 2017.

2. Elina Kari from Helsinki, Finland, started her PhD in Sept 2013 Title: Seasonal changes of water quality in the Baltic Sea and the effect of ice thawing on the development of the phytoplankton spring bloom (funded by: SNSB for 3 years and the SU Faculty for 13 months). Main Supervisor: S. Kratzer, Co-supervisors: Prof Matti Leppäranta, Helsinki University and Prof Monika Winder (SU). Half Time Seminar passed: April 07, 2016.

3. Krista Alikas, Tartu Observatory(TO), Estonia: Main supervisor: Anu Reinart (TO); Initially I was the Co-supervisor; latter I was the Acting Principal Supervisor during the last 2-3 years of KA’s PhD studies which she successfully defended in June 2016. Published joint papers on Kd490 algorithms (Alikas et al., 2016) and about improved Secchi depth retrieval over optically-complex waters (Alikas and Kratzer, 2017), along with a joint book chapter (Kratzer et al., 2016).

4. Therese Harvey from Stockholm, Sweden defended her PhD thesis on October 02, 2015. Thesis Title: ‘Bio-optics, satellite remote sensing and Baltic Sea ecosystems- Applications for monitoring and management’. Main Supervisor: S. Kratzer; Co-supervisors: Petra Philipsson, BG and Jakob Walve, SU.

5. Jose Beltrán-Abaunza from Mexico defended his PhD on January 29, 2016; Thesis Title: ‘Remote sensing in optically complex waters - water quality assessment using MERIS data’. Main Supervisor: S. Kratzer: Co-supervisor: Dr Carsten Brockmann, Brockmann Consult BC, Germany.

Hosting of Early Stage Researchers and Post-docs 1. Dr Evgeny Morozov, NIERSC, St. Petersburg, Russia, worked in my group as Post-doc for 1 year

during 2014 (was funded by FP7 EuRuCAS); Joint Publication: Book Chapter (Kratzer et al., 2016). 2. Dr Monika Wozniak, from University of Gdansk, Poland worked in my Research Group as Post-doc

between September 2013- and May 2014 (was funded by the Swedish Institute); Joint paper published in Remote Sensing (Wozniak et al., 2017).

3. Dr Selima Ben Mustapha from Tunisia and Canada, worked as Research Engineer from August 2012 to July 2014 (funded by EUFP7 WaterS & EuRuCAS and by ESA/ESRIN project 21524. Joint book chapter (Kratzer et al., 2016) and published paper (Philipsson et al., 2016).

4. Dr Diana Vaičiūtė, Klaipeda University (KU), Lithuania worked as a visiting PhD student in 2011 (Nordic Network), is now a post-doc at KU; Joint publication: Kari et al., (2016).

5. Dr Annelies Hommersom, Water Insight, The Netherlands, worked as for one year as a Post-doc at SU during 2011 (funded by WaterS. Joint paper on inter-comparison of reflectance measurements (Hommersom et al. 2012).

My Major Recent Assignments 1. Coordinator of the Nordic Network for Baltic Sea Remote Sensing November 2008-October 2016

with about 70 active Researchers and PhD students. Focus: Networking, scientific workshops and PhD training, funded by: NordForsk, http://www.NordBaltRems.org

1. I was invited by the European Association of Remote Sensing Laboratories (EARSEeL) to organize and convene a 2-day workshop on 'Coastal and Baltic Sea Remote Sensing' during the EARSeL Symposium held in Stockholm during June 15-19, 2015.

2. I am an active member of the ESA MERIS validation team since 2001. 3. I am also a Lead Scientist of the Swedish Sentinel-3 validation team.

4. I am PI of the NASA Aeronet-OC station in Lake Vänern which is also used for fiducial reference measurements. Our data has contributed to the ESA MERMAID data base with a fair number of valid MERIS match-ups in highly absorbing waters.

5. I was Convenor of the Baltic Sea Remote Sensing Plenary Session and a workshop on ‘Bio-optical modelling and remote sensing’ BSSC, August 25-31, 2013 Klaipeda, Lithuania.

6. I was Convener of Baltic Sea Remote Sensing Plenary Session and of a workshop on ‘Bio-optical modelling and remote sensing’, BSSC, August 22-26, 2011, St. Petersburg.

Invited Expert 7. I was invited by the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management (Gothenburg) to write

an expert evaluation report on the use of RS products for Baltic Sea monitoring and management including an assessment of the Copernicus standard products (OLCI on Sent-3) with focus on chlorophyll-a, and in comparison with products from other operational systems in the Baltic Sea (Kratzer et al., 2016; HaV report).

8. I was invited as an expert for the Workshop BONUS EEIG for Information and Communication Technology Services for Environment, Safety and Security in the Baltic, Helsinki, on April 12, 2010.

9. I have been a Scientific Advisor to the Estonian Research programme (EstSpace) funded by the EU capacity building program (2008-2010).
