Since 1982 he has shifted his research focus in order to make a more representative contribution to research in Human Resources Management, Organisational Behaviour and, more recently, to Aviation Psychology. He has consistently been involved in research projects for over 40 years and has authored and co-authored 42 refereed articles and papers, 17 research reports and 12 non-refereed publications. He has delivered and co-delivered 41 conference papers (at 14 national and 27 international conferences) on various topics. His contribution to research in his discipline is also reflected in his ability to act as a team leader and to motivate and empower his colleagues and students to contribute to national and international research. As a team leader, he established a research policy for his department in 1986. He followed this up by initiating several projects to generate funds to improve and increase the research outputs of the members of his department and to ensure that they are given opportunities to publish their results in an international forum. Despite a high lecturing load and staff shortages, his colleagues have published more than 113 refereed articles and papers and 33 popular-scientific articles since the inception of the department in 1986. The members of the department had already presented no fewer than 227conference papers (79 national and 148 international) by the end of 2007. Prof. Vermeulen also pro-actively encourages postgraduate students to publish and present papers, with the result that their expertise is continuously expanded and they develop a real love for research and for the academic environment. His efforts to enhance research output in his department included

the development of two CDs to support his students and colleagues (Selection of appropriate statistical methods and How to write a scientific article). 36 masters and 12 doctoral students have successfully completed their research and theses under his supervision. All these students received very positive reports from the external examiners. As an academic, Prof. Vermeulen is characterised by a responsible and scientific approach. He is an excellent lecturer and lectures with enthusiasm, combining his thorough academic grounding with his own experience of the applications of the theory. According to feedback received from students via academic liaison mechanisms such as the class representatives and student evaluations, he is an effective and popular lecturer. His evaluation score, based on the opinions of both undergraduate and graduate students, is above 85% in the various lecturing areas. Prof. Vermeulen enjoys wide recognition as an academic and researcher, as is evidenced by the following:

he acts as an external examiner for several universities, especially at the graduate level;

on several occasions he has been invited to lecture, and to present workshops and papers, both nationally and abroad;

he is frequently asked to adjudicate articles for publication in refereed journals;

the National Research Foundation (NRF) has asked him to adjudicate applications for research and bursary awards; and

he is involved in international research projects. Prof. Vermeulen is an internationally recognised scholar on the effects of organisational restructuring, downsizing and retrenchment on employee behaviour. From 1997 to 2002, he was a co-researcher in a comprehensive research project on organisational restructuring, downsizing, delayering and managers' career development co-ordinated by Prof. Craig R. Littler, in conjunction with Prof. Retha Wiesner (University of Southern Queensland), Prof. Richard Dunford (Victoria University of Wellington) and Dr Tom Bramble (University of Queensland). The HRSC evaluated the project and awarded a research grant to him for the South African leg of the project. He authored and co-authored six refereed articles, seven conference papers and one technical report on the research results of this project.

In 2002, Prof. Vermeulen initiated an international research project on gender issues in aviation. This project arose from the considerable increase in the number of female pilots in what many still perceive to be a male-dominated sphere. He leads the project. Dr Jim Mitchell and Dr Alexandra Kristovics (University of Western Sydney), Prof. Dr Monica Martinussen (University of Tromsø) and Dr Janice Wilson (Independence Air, USA) are the co-researchers. The project is ongoing. To date, 2 420 pilots have participated in the project and some results have already been presented in one technical report, in five international conference papers and five refereed articles. Dr Janice Wilson has also completed her doctoral thesis on the results of part of this study (under the supervision of Prof. Vermeulen). The aviation industry regards this project as an important source of information for the training of pilots in crew resources management (CRM) and diversity management on the flight deck, as well as for the promotion of aviation safety. In 2007, he initiated a research project on the perceptions and experiences of airline pilots who operate advanced automated aircraft. In 2009, this project was extended to include NASA’s survey on General Aviation pilots’ perceptions of advanced cockpit aircraft in the USA, South Africa and Australia. This international survey is co-ordinated by Dr. Jim Mitchell (University of Western Sydney) and Professor Vermeulen (University of Pretoria), in conjunction with flight Instructor and lecturer Ron Bishop (University of Central Queensland) and Senior First Officer Preven Naidoo (South-African Airways). Based on his involvement with international institutions, Prof. Vermeulen has been able to ensure that his department stays on the cutting edge with regard to new developments in his discipline and that it continues to enjoy international recognition. He has built up an extensive collegial network of both local and international academics. Prof. Vermeulen leads by example, encouraging his colleagues to

become involved in international research programmes and to establish relationships with colleagues abroad. Since his entry into the academic world, he has served in a range of subject-related capacities. From 1970 to 1973, he was a member of the Management Committee of the SA Association for Underwater Sciences and in 1972 became the Association’s secretary. From 1977 to 1982, he acted as a research consultant for the then SA Defence Force’s Head Staff Personnel and was often invited to present guest lectures at the Military Academy’s Department of Industrial Psychology. From 1989 to 1991, he was also a committee member of the SA Institute for People Management (Northern Gauteng Branch) and he was a nominated member of the Committee for Education and Training in the SA Board for Personnel Practice. He was a mentor for the Board for Personnel Practice. On several occasions, he acted as an evaluator for the accreditation of training institutions with the Professional Board for Psychology and the Professional Board for Personnel Practice. Prof. Vermeulen is a member of several associations, including the Society of Industrial and Organisational Psychology (SIOPSA) and the Psychological Society of South Africa (PssySA) and the European Association for Aviation Psychology (EAAP). He is registered as a master human resources practitioner with the South African Board for Personnel Practice and as an Industrial Psychologist with the Professional Board for Psychology. In the last twenty years he has focused on the development and expansion of his discipline in order to address the new challenges and needs of the modern world of work. Prof. Vermeulen has honed his ability to recognise new developments in the discipline even before they become current and to ensure renewal by means of pro-active action. He was instrumental in the institution of courses in subjects such as Group Dynamics, Labour Relations and the Management of Diversity long before these were recognised as fully fledged fields in Human Resources Management in the rest of South Africa. Thanks to his input, these fields have developed into full subjects in both undergraduate and graduate programmes and continue to address the current needs of the South African community. In addition, he has instituted a number of short courses as part of the Department of Human Resources Management’s contribution to community service and continued education. The Department presents certificate programmes in Labour Relations, the Facilitation of Change, Mentoring, Leadership and Human Resources Management in co-operation with Continued Education at UP (CE@UP). From 1992 onwards, he investigated the institution of a degree in Aviation Management for aviation staff. After comprehensive surveys, both national and international, and lengthy liaison with the aviation industry, he successfully established the B Com and B Admin degrees in Aviation Management at the University of Pretoria in 1996. Thanks to Prof. Vermeulen’s exceptional knowledge in this field, he was co-opted by the Aviation Industry’s Education and Training Committee and became a nominated member of the Aviation Human Resources Work Group of the Southern African Developing Communities (SADC). In co-operation with the Department of Transport and the Civil Aviation Authority of South Africa, he was involved in the arrangement of the International Civil Aviation Authority’s workshops in aviation safety for the African region. He was co-opted to represent the University of Pretoria in the Aerospace Chamber of the Transport SETA and to serve as a member of the Aerospace Operations Standards Generating Body (SGB) until 2006. In addition to his formal involvement, Prof. Vermeulen has also rendered community service to students and the staff of his alma mater. He was Chairman of the UP Underwater Sport Club for ten years (1974-1984). During 1978, he was President of the SA Universities Underwater Sport Committee. In 1980 he was a founder member of the University of Pretoria’s Staff Association and later became its vice-chairman (1986-1988) and chairman (1989-1991). He received honorary colours (1979) both from the Student Council for the development of student sport and from the UP Staff Association (1991) for his active contribution to improving the working life of the university staff. In 1988, the Ladies Bureau of South Africa also awarded to him a certificate of merit for his contribution
