C. College:CHAMBER ENSEMBLE RESIDENCY 1998-presentOverseen by the dean of CAH, the Chamber Ensemble Residency at CWU and Icicle Creek Music Center benefits the Music Department and University in several different ways. Only the most distinguished of music schools or conservatories in the nation can boast an endowed chamber ensemble residency of this magnitude. Prospective string students are attracted by the presence of seven string/orchestra faculty, by the opportunity to study chamber music with a professional quartet and by the exposure the quartet affords the program by presenting many concerts and school presentations in and out of the state. The Kairos Quartet has performed for several different music courses within the music department as well as in high school and elementary school programs, and for visiting orchestras from Washington, Montana, Oregon, Idaho and Utah.

Beginning in the summer of 1997, Carrie Rehkopf and I instigated the development of the CWU and ICMC relationship and convinced ICMC to invest $125,000 in CWU to be matched with Foundation and state Endowed Chair Professorship Grant funds to establish the current endowed chamber music residency. I researched other chamber music residencies, developed working

relationships with the different parties involved, spent personal resources introducing parties involved, attended meetings, helped in the numerous drafts of the residency agreement document, solicited individual sponsorship and conducted other related tasks. This year-long development process included a special fundraiser event at the Stimpson Green Mansion in Seattle where the Kairos Quartet and pianist Allen Dameron gave a mini-Collage concert. Unfortunately, because of state limitations on state matching funds and the continued reduction of Foundation payout, the Residency activity continues to be diminished. We hope we can remedy this to help keep our current quartet colleagues.

D. Department:RECRUITMENTI continue to focus my recruitment efforts on private studios and youth symphony organizations in addition to the public schools, by giving masterclasses and clinics, adjudicating contests, increasing exposure through more off-campus performances, co-directing the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute every summer, and distributing the ‘Strings at CWU” CD. We continue to attend conventions, contests, planning sessions and music festivals of which we are not necessarily participants for recruitment purposes.

CWUSTRINGS.COM 2002-presentAfter many cumbersome conversations with prospective students, trying to relay the homepage of the music department “h t t p : forward slash forward slash w w w dot c w u dot e d u forward slash tilda (the key at the top left hand corner of most keyboards below the "Esc" key m u s i c” and how to navigate to the page that students need, I decided to offer a simpler solution. I designed and developed this website for the specific purpose of attracting prospective string students to our program here at Central. (This was done on my own time with my own money.) These prospective students can go directly to information specifically about the string program including our area mission statement, faculty, performance and teaching opportunities, environment, recordings, scholarship and audition information, calendar, and alumni. There are also links going to various pages of the official CWU website. This has taken me about 100 hours to accomplish, and I continue to maintain and update the website.

‘STRINGS AT CWU’ CD -spring 2004I continue to distribute the remaining few CDs to prospective students.(In 1999 over 900 CDs have been distributed to prospective high school music students, their orchestra directors and private teachers. All the string players and many wind players of the Tacoma Youth Symphony, Seattle Youth Symphony and the Icicle Creek Youth Symphony received in the mail a CD in November of 1999. All the orchestra directors of the state and all of the known private teachers of the state also received the CD free of charge. The CD cover is a colorful picture of the string faculty with the Japanese garden and the new Science building in the background. The liner notes contain information about Central’s music program and string area.)

CENTRAL CELLO CELEBRATION 2004, 2006 (Again, this event is largely motivated by the desire to attract the best high school cellists to Central.)

SUMMER FESTIVAL AND WORKSHOPSWe created and directed the following:Kairos Chamber Music Institute 2005, 2006, 2007CWU Laughing Horse Youth Orchestra Festival 2005, 2006, 2007Icicle Creek Chamber Music Institute 1995-2004

There are several reasons why we believe these summer workshops will attract more students to Central. Prospective students are able to study with us and interact with our college students, they hear us in off-campus performances, observe us collaborating with other internationally recognized musicians. We not only hope to recruit the students that attend but those that hear about us indirectly. The workshops positively influences the status and image of Central and its music faculty. Students tell their orchestra directors, private teachers, parents and other students of their experience. Former students wear t-shirts, hats and other garments proudly.

(different theme each year)A concerted effort to bring classical music into the heart of the Ellensburg community in a less formal, fun setting.I have assisted Carrie Rehkopf in the various logistical aspects of putting on this large and ambitious community concert series. My students have benefited by having the opportunity to perform in the Brown Bag Concerts, observing, and helping in organizing these outreach events.

INTERNET CELLO SOCIETY (cello.org) 1995-2006I created the ICS to educate future generations of the great cellists and cello repertoire. When I searched the Internet in 1995, I found only 4 hits, 2 of which were for the web browser called "Cello". I was determined not to have future generations think of the cello as only a web browser.
