National Policy
Activities
I chaired a committee installed by the Research and Documentation Centre
(RDC) of the Ministry of Justice to support a study which investigates
programs on the prevention of truancy from the part of the Criminal Justice
system. At this moment I chair a committee installed by the RDC to support a
study on family-support programs (Meta-evaluatie methodieken van
opvoedingsondersteuning). I also participate in a committee on 'Home
Visitation by nurses'. Furthermore, I am a member of a Committee of the
Dutch Health Board (Gezondheidsraad) on the effect of health information
mass-media campaigns.
I worked with a committee which evaluated preventive interventions of
conduct problems in relation to possible introduction of these interventions in
the Netherlands.
Other activities
Chair of the committee of two new teaching programs on Safety in
Belgium for the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders
(NVAO), 2011 – 2012.
Teaching I developed and coordinate an executive master ‘risk and safety in ICT &
cyberspace’ (https://www.utwente.nl/onderwijs/professional-learning-and-
development/executive_opleidingen/masterclass-risico-en-veiligheid-in-ict-
7
en-cyberspace/#opleidingsoverzicht). This is a multidisciplinary master track
in Dutch.
I developed the minor Cybercrime and Cyber Security, together with Prof.
Dr. Rainer Böhme (University of Innsbruck, Austria) and the Westfälische
Wilhelms-Universität Münster (WWU Münster).
In 2010 I developed the minor ‘Crime Science & Risk Governance’ and
taught several courses in the minor.
I taught the course ‘Crime Science for Public Policy’ in the master.
Together with Prof Hartel I developed and still teach the multidisciplinary
course ‘Cyber Crime Science’
(https://wwwhome.ewi.utwente.nl/~pieter/CCS/).
At Utrecht University I coordinated an Introduction to Developmental
Psychology for Psychology students and for students in Education. In
Amsterdam (UvA) I have developed a new course on prevention and
treatment of conduct disorders.
I was responsible for lectures in the first-year course Developmental
Psychology and Health. I teach the course ‘Crime in Context (SC 326), which
is a course Psychology and Crime for the University College Utrecht
(together with dr. Alexis Aronowitz). I also led several seminars on Practices
Of Research Techniques (Onderzoekspracticum, leeronderzoek), personality
and developmental psychology.
In 2000-2008 was involved in the tutorials of the Introduction of
Developmental Psychology, Introduction of Personality Psychology, and
Research practicum.
I supervised about 30 master theses. I lectured as a visiting researcher at the
Universities of London (UK), Pittsburgh (USA), Michigan (USA), Leuven
(KUL, Belgium), and Montreal (Canada).
I am/was a member of about 8 PhD dissertation committees. Thesis of
1. Jessica Asscher in 2005 (Utrecht University)
2. Inge Wissink in 2006 (Utrecht University)
3. Karlijn Beune (University of Twente)

7. Peter Knapik, 2016 (University of Twente)
8. Johannes Kotzerke, Planned for May 2016 (University of Twente)
Managing Research
Teams
From the time I started working at the WODC (Ministry of Justice) in 1984, I
have managed research teams and research assistants to conduct data
collection and data analysis. I was the principal investigator at the Ministry of
Justice of the following projects: Ethnicity and Crime, Assistance to victims
of crime, Restitution within the Criminal Justice System, Traffic accidents of
ethnic minorities, and Neighbourhood Crime Prevention. These projects
8
involved various assistants and all involved a considerable data-collection
effort. This is reflected in the fact that all the Reports for the Ministry of
Justice are authored by myself and one or two other researchers (and
assistants). At the NSCR I led the data collection in the project Crime and
accidents in the police records.
