XIII. Grant Support

Active Research Support; Treatment of Vestibular Impairment of Service Members after Traumatic Brain Injury through Use of an Individualized, Portable Neuromodulation Device

TOPIC NUMBER: DHA192-002 LOG # 19253003 (Datta, PI) [email protected] OBJECTIVE: To develop a wearable portable stimulator to stimulate the vestibular system and produce immediate improvements in dizziness, balance, gait and overall vestibular function. To enable Service Members to return to duty after suffering injuries that result in vestibular dysfunction. PHASE I: Phase I projects for this topic will conceptualize the technology and identify design specifications. Role: Site-PI, Expert Consultant

Study Effort: 3.437% Grant sponsor/support: CONTRACT NUMBER: W 81XW H20P0016 Direct Costs: $7000 Projected Study Duration: PHASE I PERFORMANCE PERIOD: January 21, 2020 – July 20, 2020 (Research Ends 20 July 2020) Comparative Effectiveness of an Exercise Intervention Delivered via Telerehabilitation and Conventional Mode of Delivery

(Backus, PI) Purpose and specific aim: This trial is a multi-site study aims to assess the comparative impact of a 16-week telerehabilitation exercise program and a facility-based exercise program on MS outcomes. Dr. Deborah Backus is the principal investigator (PI) and Prof. Robert Motl is the co-Principal Investigator supported by collaborating co-Investigators at five research sites and the iConquerMS outcomes data collaborative. Shepherd Center is the primary and coordinating site for all study activities under Dr. Backus. This study will yield important data to inform people with MS who have objective walking impairment, as well as healthcare providers, exercise trainers, payers, and policy makers, about exercise options for people with MS. Our main hypothesis is that there will be no difference in outcomes when the evidence-based

individualized exercise program is delivered in a facility (FET) or via telerehab (TET) (i.e., walking and other outcomes will improve similarly between conditions). Our null hypothesis is that TET is inferior to FET. A secondary hypothesis is that patients who perform their preferred choice of program (TET(Choice) or FET(Choice)) will have better outcomes in self-efficacy,

adherence, and adoption of exercise than no choice conditions. Our specific aims (SAs) are as follows: SA1: Compare the extent of change pre-test to post-test in walking and mobility outcomes, social and vocational participation, and quality of life between the identical evidence-based individualized exercise program delivered via FET or TET in adults with MS who have slowed walking (greater than 6 seconds on the T25FWT); SA2: Evaluate and compare the effectiveness between participants randomized to their preferred delivery mode (TET(Choice) or FET(Choice)) and those who are not randomized to their preferred delivery mode (TET or FET); and SA3: Evaluate changes in self-efficacy, and adoption of exercise between these groups (TET, FET, TET(Choice), FET(Choice)). Role: SubAward; Co-Investigator; Site-PI
