lectures and laboratory. Topics included evolution, cell structure and function, plant systems, animal systems and genetics.

GE 2400 "Science and Technology in the Modern World" a lecture and discussion course that explored the role of Science and Technology in our daily lives and its impact and relationship to social and political frameworks. Topics included definition of science, risk assessment, ecological issues such as pollution, waste management and rainforest destruction, biotechnology, funding of science and peer review, bias of science, relationship to industry, fraud, and women and science.

BIO 302 "Computers and Biology" a mathematical modeling course for juniors and seniors that included such common biological problems as chemical reactions, diffusion across a membrane, flow of energy and nutrients in an ecosystem, competition and predation, and their analytical solution. Students wrote computer programs in BASIC to model these biological processes.

ENV 207 "Introduction to Environmental Science" included lectures and laboratories on pollution, risk analysis, ecosystem ecology and human population dynamics.

BIOL 6996 "The role and structure of theory in Biology" a seminar for graduate students that includes lectures but whose main focus is on students presenting their own research in a theoretical context. I begin by lecturing on the history of Biology and important

philosophical issues. We then map out the structure of three key theories in Biology: Cell Theory, Developmental Theory and Evolutionary Theory. Student presentations follow, in which they give the historical process of the theory their research is closest to and then show how their individual research meshes with this theory.

CINA 4995 "Environmental and ecological model building techniques" for both graduate and undergraduate students that teaches the fundamentals of modeling (data structures, kinds of models and basic approaches) using both existing computer simulation software and by having students write their own models using C++. Topics include biochemical processes, ecotoxicology, pollution, climate change, population dynamics and community interactions. MATH 3026 "Statistics with computers" an elementary statistics course for undergraduates that uses the MINITAB statistical package software. Topics include basic probability, discrete and continuous random variables, sampling, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, analysis of variance and linear regression.

BIOL 3112 "Introduction to Ecology" laboratory. A first course on the fundamentals of ecology. Scientific method, evolution, population, community, ecosystems, human ecology, environmental and pollution issues.

SICI 3225 "Computer Programming Visual Basic 4.0" a course for business and humanities students. They learn this new menu-driven language, mathematical statements, I/O, looping, files, data structures, modular and structured programming.

MATH 4995 “Linux programming” starts with a review of the UNIX operating system. Then students learn the basics of Linux utilities, commands and file structure. From there we learn how to program the various Linux shells. Finally, students learn about how to interface with the internet, set up a wan and lan, and do system administration.

BIO 1304 “Introductory Plant Biology” a first course in plant biology that covers basic morphology, taxonomy, anatomy, ecology, photosynthesis, respiration and plant life cycles.

BIO 4723,5723 “Biometrics” covers basic statistics, hypothesis testing, Chi-square, single and multiple regression/correlation, Analysis of Variance, Multiple analysis of variance, Ordination, clustering, spatial statistics, experimental design and SAS programming.

BIO 1114 “General Biology” covers basic chemistry, cell function and structure, cell division, genetics, evolution, the five kingdoms, plant and animal function and structure, human ecology and ecosystems.

BIO 4204/5204 “Plant Ecology” covers climate, biogeochemical cycles, plant evolution/adaptations, biomes, ecophysiology, plant populations, community structure, plant-animal interactions, competition, disturbance and landscapes.
