The NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme:: Human and Societal Dynamics
Strategic Tasks:
Team member.
The aim of the Science for Peace and Security Programme is to contribute to security, stability
and solidarity among nations, by applying the best technical expertise to problem solving.
Collaboration, networking and capacity-building are means used to accomplish this end. A
further aim is to facilitate continued democratic growth and support economic development in
NATO's Partner countries.
Civil science has proved to be a highly effective vehicle for international dialogue, due to its
universality and dependence upon international networks. The talent garnered in these scientific
networks can be applied to emerging threats faced by the Alliance. Science is both a means of
finding answers to critical questions and a way of connecting nations.
In 1996, NATO initiated a Dialogue with seven countries of the Mediterranean region,
reflecting the Alliance's view that security in Europe is closely linked to security and stability in
the Mediterranean. Known as the Mediterranean Dialogue.
14
One outcome of the project was an international conference on Democracy, Security and
human rights and edited book on Understanding Terrorism: Sociological and Psychological
aspects of terrorism.
University of Castilla – la Mancha, Toledo , Spain ( UME).
Institute in Governance, Public Policy and Civil Society 2002
Strategic Tasks:
Team member
During the summer institute in Toledo, Spain, many international scholars ( from USA,
Europe and MENA) and NGOs leader from MENA region have discussed and debated Arab
cultural issues like gender women, civil society… etc.
http://www.ume.org/past.htm. The conclusion of institute was collective discussion; day life
activities; informal settings are effective ways to gain trust and respect of other cultures.
Understanding the norms, customs, and the value system of Arab society facilitate mutual
interaction and understanding of self and others.
Authoring
Another contribution was transforming the Arabian culture to others through
authoring a book on Understanding Terrorism (in English) with NATO & TIPS NATO
Science for Peace and Security Series: Human and Societal Dynamics. A chapter on social causes of
terrorism in the Arab society has focused on the failure of human development as a major cause of
terrorism in the Arab world, not the culture nor the religion as many people believe. Deficits in
all human development aspects are attributed to the causes of terrorism and violence in the Arab
society. Citing the academic knowledge in the Arabian culture in other culture is another
contribution. A study for example on Attitudes towards elderly has been cited by researchers in
Hong Kong www.library.ln.edu.hk/ethesis/wong_031105.pdf and other research such as
Nurses' performance has been cited too:
http://www.philadelphia.edu.jo/arabic/adfin/research/32.pdf
Translation
I have translated one of the well known books in the academic community, which deals
with copy rights and citation of the academic work. He won the Best Book Translation Award",
by Philadelphia University, Jordan. For the translation to the "American Psychological Associate
Publication Manual" a book which has been sold (10) million copies in USA.
Intellectual Dialogue
Dialogue with Self and the others is the corner stone of my work. A meeting with the
vice president of Volgograd State University (VSU), MOU will be signed soon to enable
students and faculty from VSU members to study Arabic language and explore the Arab culture
and visa versa Arab students to explore Russian language and culture. Russian student will live
15
and study Arabic language and culture. A language Center has been established and will be used
for this purpose
International Conferences
I have chaired more than 20 international conference and seminars. On average more
than 300 participants a year from 50 countries have participated in theses professional and
intellectual activities. Participants have been exposed to Arabian culture (i.e., food, folklore) and
have visited historical and religious places. Exchange of idea, views, and interests have been
occurred between participants.
Media
On AL-Jazera Direct (Live), I directed a group of researchers from USA, Jordan, KSA,
and Australia, in a discussion on Global Security, Media and the relationship between security
and human development. A discussion included the role of media in the West in creating
stereotypes toward Arab culture and the attachments of negative labels to Islam such as
terrorism.
