2. Research

Formulation of Poorly Soluble Drugs

The development, evaluation, characterization, and delivery of

poorly water soluble drugs through oral and intranasal route for the

diagnosis, treatment, and/or prevention of diseases.

Phytochemicals/Food Supplements

Designing of novel drug delivery systems for poorly water soluble

phytochemicals such as curcumin, resveratrol, quercetin etc. and

their combinations for enhanced anti-oxidant and anti-cancer

activities.

Molecular Modeling/Machine Learning

Utilization of machine learning and molecular modeling approaches

as a tool for the prediction of the properties of drugs/phytochemicals

and their toxicities.

Novel Drug Delivery Systems

The development and evaluation of amorphous and nano-

particulate systems that can enhance the solubility, control the rate

of drug release and target the drug from a drug

product/formulations. Qualitative and quantitative characterization

of these systems using X-ray powder diffraction, modulated

differential scanning calorimetry, infrared and Raman

spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy techniques etc.

Purpose: The expected outcome of this project is a set of delivery systems for

curcumin and resveratrol that can be investigated in vivo for their

anticancer properties, and eventually developed as oral anticancer

agents. This research will be used as a foundation for the

development of other supplement-amorphous solid dispersion

combinations as therapeutic agents. The long term goals of the grant

is to include the discovery of new cancer treatments and

improvements in the use of existing therapies.
