theareaofsimulationdrivendesignwithinaproductdevelopmentcontext.Theapplicationswerewithinautomotive, and high-speed train sector. Special emphasis was onmulti-body dynamics and simulationdrivendesignwithinaproductdevelopmentcontext.

§ The core of today is within the Engineering Design Research area, where the focus is on developingmethodsandtoolsforengineeringproductdevelopmentandsimulationapplicationsinindustrialsettingsto support development of sustainable product-service systems (PSS) that should create value in theupcomingFunctionalEconomy.PSSputsthefocusonthefunctionalaspectsofthedevelopmentanddrivestheusuallyseparatedproductandservicedevelopmentteamsintoamoreconcurrentwayofworkingtoensure delivery of a life-cycle function. Value modelling and simulation, knowledge management, andinnovationengineeringcapabilitywhendevelopingPSSisofextrainterestintheresearch.

§ The constantly expanding “engineers desktop” is expandingwith new tools andmethods, and here thefocus isonModelBasedEngineering/Enterprise.Theupdated"engineeringtoolbox2.0"fortheengineerofthefutureneedstosupportorganisationsmovingintoa“greener”situation,hencelife-cyclefactorsandsustainability,besidesthetraditionalfactorsofproductperformance,arealwaysinfocus.

§ TCL is currently supervising 4 PhD students and has examined several PhD's (22) and licentiate (22)degrees. He has contributed in over 100 peer-reviewed publications within his research area. TCL hasinitiatedandfinalizedseveralresearchprojects.TCLwasthemainpersonbehindthecreationoftheFasteLaboratory, a VINN Excellence Centre within product-service systems (2007-2016). He is also the mainapplicant and Center Director for the BTH KK Foundation Research Profile within Model DrivenDevelopment and Decision Support at BTH (2013-2019). He is co-founder of the Design for Wellbeingframework,a joint researchproject togetherwithStanfordUniversity,USA,andHoseiUniversity, Japan,and have taken part in several European Union projects within aerospace sector (VIVACE 2004-2007,CRESCENDO2009-2012),andhealthcaresector(PrimCareIT2012-2104).

Researchagenda Traditionally,Swedishindustryhasdevelopedandsoldhardware-dominatedproducts,e.g.trucks,enginesandcars.Today,Swedishindustrycompanieshavenoticedachange.Customerswhohaveuntilnowexpressedtheirneedsinrelationtothephysicalartefact, i.e.a technicalspecification,havebeguntoexpresswhattheyexpect thephysicalartefactshouldbringaboutintheiruseoftheartefact.Aserviceperspectiveonproductdevelopmenthasgrownoutoftheseradicalchangesconcerningmarketexpectationsandneeds,wherecustomersareincreasinglydemandinganindividualised product andwhere their primary interest is in functions, rather than hardware. This shifted view iscapturedintheconceptofProduct-ServiceSystems,andthedevelopmentofPSS’scapturedindevelopmentmethods.Anintegrationofthehardware,softwareandserviceaspectsisthestartingpointwithintentiontoprovidecustomerswithamoreencompassingoffer,thetotaloffer.Despitetheintentionsofachievingthisintegration,itisnotyetfullyunderstoodhowthisshiftedviewwillaffectthedevelopmentprocessesofthephysicalartefactandthetechnologicalprogress.Itisnoteitherfullyunderstoodhowsustainabilityeffectscanbeaccountedfor.TheoverallobjectivewiththePSSresearchcanthenbeseenastoexaminehowphysicalartefactsandservicesmaybe designed and developed to become an element in a total offer, as well as enhance integrated productdevelopmenttoextendtowardssustainableproduct-servicesysteminnovation.Servicestodayoccurinanaftermarketandareseenasadd-onstothephysicalartefact.Amajorpartoftheprofitsismade on aftermarket activities, such asmaintenance and spare parts. One trigger for PSS, found in an industrialcontext, istheinteresttocontroltheaftermarketactivitiesofthephysicalartefact.Thedrivingforcetocontroltheaftermarketalsoenablesecologicalsustainabilitythroughremanufacturinganddesign,withrespecttotechnologicaladvances, aswell as tominimise the cost ofmaintenance and spare parts, since it is at the provider’s own cost.Fundamentally,thisevolvingviewimpliesextendingthelife-cyclecommitmentsofproductdevelopingcompanies(i.e.suppliersretainownershipthroughoutthetotallife-cycle)andanincreaseddemandtocollaborateinglobalalliancesbetween value chain partners (i.e. the extended enterprise). Extending the life-cycle commitment creates newdemandsonthehardwaredevelopmentprocess,whichnowwillhavetodealwithadditionalneedsandrequirementsemanatingfromtheaftermarket.Futurecustomerswill judgethephysicalartefactbythefunctionsitprovidesinalargerperspective,i.e.anoptimisationtothecustomersbusinessasawhole.ThePSSareaintegratesthestrandsofhardwaredevelopmentandservicedevelopmentintoadevelopmentprocesswithalife-cycleperspectivethatinfunctionalsalesbusinessagreementspredictsrisk,improvesthematurityofthedecisionbaseandensuresvisibilityofcostandincomeDifferencespresentlyexistbetweenacoreproductperspectiveandaserviceperspective,andhighlightingchangesintheproductdevelopmentprocessesthataremotivatedbythenotionofPSSisinteresting.Integratingthestrandsofservice development and hardware development into the PSS processwith a life-cycle perspective, supported bysimulation of not only manufacturing processes and in-service use, but also business processes and services. Inaddition, a goal of the research within this knowledge area is to advance the knowledge towards a productdevelopmentmethodologywhere simulation tools are used to actually drive, andnot only verify, thedesignof aproduct,manufacturingprocesses,businessprocessesoraservicecommitment.WithinPSSthereexistssomestrandsthatareofextrainterestforTCLregardingtheresearch:§ PSSinnovationprocesses

OntheeducationalsideTCLworkswiththechangingfacetsofoursocietywherenewknowledgeisneededtocreatetheproductsandservicesoftomorrow.Hereweneedtoeducateinbothexploitend(dothethingsyouneedtodowithlessresources)andtheexploredimension(findnewwaystodonewthings)andthismeansthatweneedtomixdisciplinesineducationandcreatethefutureproblemsolvers.Throughthedevelopmentofanewmasterprogrammeinsustainableproduct-servicesysteminnovation(MSPI,http://www.mspi.se)thatwasdeployedatBTHfall2010,aneducational platform for innovation education is created. Here different disciplines can meet and together withentrepreneursandcompaniesdevelopthesustainablesolutionsfortomorrow.

Previous,atLTU,TCLwasdeveloperandprogrammecoordinatorofaninternationalmastersprogrammeinProductDevelopment that started2007.Theprogrammewasamanifestationof thepreviousandcurrent researchwithinengineeringdesignandproductdevelopmentwherethefocusisontheabilitytotraintheabilitytodevelopproductsthat answers to new customer demands. New products and services (PSS as an example) require new tools andmethods,andhenceothercompetenciesthanthe“regular”engineeringprogrammestrain,hencethenewmastersprogramme.

Product development and product innovation builds on the training and execution of innovation, creativity, andentrepreneurship,togetherwithdomainknowledgein,forexample,mechanicalengineering.Theteachingisamixoftheoryandprojectstogetherwithindustryandsocietywheretheprocessofgoingfromideatoconceptispursuedduringtheprogrammes.ClosecollaborationwiththeStanfordd.schoolprogrammeandcolleaguesandbusinessintheBayAreaisestablishedintheBTHMSPIprogrammetohavegoodmentorsandexamplesintheprogramme.

TCL focus the education efforts to teaching in product-service innovation and engineering skills and integratesresearch into thiseducationvia thesisprojects, industrialvisitsand industrialkeynotes,hencemakingsure thatstudentsaregivengoodopportunitiestogatherlatestknowledgeandalsothechancetointeractandcollaboratewithmarketactorsfromthestartineducation.

Thepedagogicideaisthatthestudentsshouldbeencouragedtogaintheirknowledgeinanactivewayratherthanpassively build the knowledge only from theoretical lectures by the teachers. Hence, live course projects withentrepreneursandindustryisacommonpartineducationandmasterstudentsarealsoencouragedtotakepartinresearch projects. Reflection reports are used extensively as a tool to support the individual knowledge creationprocesswhenstudentsworkinteamtoperformprojects.Thereareinfluencesofproblembasedlearningandtriplelearningloopisonegoalofthecoursesetups.

TCLhavetakenLTUprogrammeregarding“Kunskapsbyggande”(KnowledgeCreationpedagogiccourses)andmixthisfoundationwiththeinternationalCDIO(Conceive,Design,Implement,Operate)curriculaandProblemBasedLearningtofindagoodwayforwardregardingBolognaandothersurroundingagendasoftodayineducation.
