Contribution in medical science
1. Alternatives to animal testing: He believes in the philosophy of 'Three Rs" of Russell and Burch". He
gave series of lectures during 2004 at "Alternatives, Animal Welfare and the Curriculum – A training
Seminar and Workshop" in different cities of India. He addressed in the meetings of InterNICHE and I-
CARE. On the recommendation of MCI, and after getting survey related to the attitude of undergraduate
medical students towards Alternatives to animal testing and Animal experiments, he initiated a separate lab
in 2006 on "Alternatives to Animal Experimentation" in the Department of Pharmacology at Jawaharlal
Nehru Medical College. This was a first attempt in any medical college of India to have an exclusive lab
where experimental work on animals was demonstrated and taught by computer aided education. In
addition, he edited "A guide to alternatives to animal experiment in pharmacology", which is included in
the curriculum of second professional MBBS course (5th edition). He even involved in preparing CAL
software (CD ROMs: EP Dog on Effects of drugs on dog BP and heart rate with JIPMER, Pondicherry) and
translated few papers into Urdu in the field of Alternatives to animal testing.
Because of such an involvement and experience in the field of simulations and alternatives, a national
workshop cum CME with the support of MCI was organized in 2014 at the Department of Pharmacology
2
with a motive to train and instil confidence to others on the use of alternatives to animal experimentations,
and to encourage participants to adopt these alternatives in their teachings and also to start similar labs in
their colleges and departments. Likewise, scholars from Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, BHU in 2009
and Govt. Medical College, Faridkot in 2015 were officially sent by their respective vice chancellors to
learn and establish similar lab at their own universities. He was felicitated for his in depth services in the
field of Alternatives to Animal Experimentation during the launching of “Society for Alternatives to
Animal Experimentation”, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi on 27.11.2018.
2. Traditional medicine: He works in the field of Traditional medicine with special reference to Unani
medicine. While working on morphine de-addiction properties of medicinal plants, he proposed a modified
method for moderately and severely induced morphine dependent rats. He specifically screened
Delphinium denudatum for its protective activity in morphine induced physical dependence. Three of his
MD candidates expanded the same work.
3. Pharmacovigilance: In the field of Pharmacovigilance, he reported several cases of ADRs first time,
including nimesulide induced hepatitis in children and coronary artery insufficiency (CAI) in adults,
gatifloxacin induced pupura, amantadine and lansoprazole induced skin reactions. He also worked in
Herbal Pharmacovigilance and gave the concept of Environmental Pharmacovigilance. The term,
“Pharmacoenvironmentology” for the study of drugs at therapeutic doses and its impact on environment
was coined by him. He differentiated the earlier terminology „Ecopharmacology‟ from
„Pharmacoenvironmentology‟. In addition, he is an active member of „Society of Pharmacovigilance, India
(SoPI). In 2003, he started „Journal of Pharmacovigilance & Drug Safety‟ (ISSN 0972–8899) as editor-in-
chief. He served SoPI in various capacities and organized its 14th Annual Conference (SOPICON 2014) at
JNMC, AMU, Aligarh. He was part of the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of International Society of
Pharmacovigilance (ISoP 2016) held at Agra. Currently, he is representing SoPI as National Secretary.
Medico-social services
He is the founder trustee and co-founder of Ibn Sina Academy of Medieval Medicine & Sciences at Aligarh
(Uttar Pradesh) for which he bequeathed his property worth millions of Indian Rupees! The Academy
consists of a unique Library of books on Medieval Medicine & Sciences, Museum on Arts, Culture &
Medical Heritage, Centre for Safety & Rational Use of Indian Systems of Medicine and AIDS Cell. In the
same library, Dr. Rahman has collected hundreds of books and periodicals on Pharmacology. The Academy
publishes 2 journals on medical sciences and 1 newsletter. It also organises many literary and cultural
programmes including medical camps on the occasion of World AIDS Day, World Health Day and World
Tuberculosis Day. The Academy is designated as “Centre of Excellence” by Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of
India and listed in the Directory of History of Medicine Collections, US Department of Health and Human
Services, National Library of Medicine, NIH, USA.

QUOATED CITATIONS
“Dr Syed Ziaur Rahman, Faculty In-charge, Alternatives to Animal Experimentation Lab, Department of
Pharmacology, Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, India, shared his
experience in practicing non-animal methods in teaching and training of experimental pharmacology. His
department has been teaching and demonstrating animal experiments through computer-based
simulators/software for the last 13 years. The department established an “Alternatives to Animal
Experimentation” lab in 2006. This was the first exclusive lab where experimental work on animals was
demonstrated by computer aided education in any medical college in India. The department now has 53
software-based pharmacology experiment teaching modules and some of these simulators are accepted in
the revised Medical Council curriculum to help undergraduate students learn the concepts of pharmacology
in an interactive and user-friendly manner. Dr Rahman has authored the book A guide to alternatives to
animal experiment in pharmacology”. Source: ALTEX 36(3), 2019: 472-6 (Springer IF 6.1).
