4. ACADEMIC AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

At the Asian Institute of Technology, I was involved in the establishments/developments of the

followings:

Environmental Sanitation Information Center (ENSIC): served as the first ENSIC Associate

Director during the period 1978-1981, and on the Advisory and Editorial Board of ENSIC.

Environmental Engineering (EE) Ambient Laboratory and the Environmental Research Station:

currently available for teaching and research.

Bioprocess Technology Program

Pulp and Paper Technology program

Interdisciplinary Water Supply, Drainage and Sewerage Engineering program

Environmental Toxicology, Technology and Management program (in collaboration with the

Chulabhorn Research Institute and Mahidol University): co-chair of the Joint Steering

Committee, 2000-2005

Executive Program in Environmental Technology and Management (ENEX), 2001-2003

CIDA-Urban Environmental Management: chair of the Concept Paper Planning Team

Southeast Asian Center for Water Environment Technology (SACWET), a partnership with

the University of Tokyo, Japan, co-chair of the joint steering committee

Intensive Program on Sustainability (IPOS), a joint academic program with the University of

Tokyo, Japan

Joint Dual Degree Program, with the Korea Institute of Science and Technology

My teaching and research focused on sanitation and the application of eco-engineering technologies for

pollution control and waste recycling. My book on ‘Organic Waste Recycling – Technology,

Management and Sustainability’, 4th edition (2017), IWA Publishing, London, presents the engineering

and environmental requirements of these recycling technologies in the tropics, including the

management, public health and sustainability aspects. It has enabled better understanding of the waste

recycling processes and promoting their application, with the overall benefits in pollution control,

resource recovery and mitigation of global warming.

I have been working on emerging hazardous waste issues such as the problems of perfluorinated

compounds, PCBs, dioxin and application of environmentally sound methods including the application

of nano-phytoremediation technology to treat/destroy them in accordance with internationally accepted

standards.

These research works have led me to a number of appointments to committees and advisory bodies,

and keynote addresses in both Thailand and abroad. I have served as member of: Academic Review

Committee of the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University; Joint

Graduate School of Energy and Environment, King Mongkut University of Technology, Thonburi;

National Environment Board of Thailand. I have served as external examiner for doctoral dissertations,

research projects, curriculum development and faculty promotions at universities in Australia,

Denmark, Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Thailand and the U.K., and have involved in

the organizations of numerous international conferences, seminars and workshops. Occasionally, I serve

as consultant to both private and public organizations internationally.

At the Sirindhorn International Institute of Technology (SIIT), Thammasat University, my duty

as Director is to strengthen SIIT to become a leading international institute of engineering and

technology in Thailand and the region. Some of the activities being undertaken include:

Development of new curriculums on Sustainable energy and environment (master’s program) and

Service science management and engineering

Increasing SIIT internationality through networking with partner universities abroad, faculty and

student exchange programs, extended training for students at partner universities

Increasing graduate employability through networking with Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) and FTI

members, Nippon Keidanren, summer and extended training for students at industries

Increasing research competency through investment in laboratory equipment and facilities, enabling

faculty members to teach graduate courses and providing research support and graduate fellowships.

The following research units were established: Sustainable Energy and Environment Unit (SEE-U),

Biomedical Engineering Unit (BM-U) and Intelligent Informatics and Services Innovation Unit (IISI-U)

Increasing e-application: online lecture notes, online registration, online performance evaluation, MIS

application

5. PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP
