World Immunization
Week 2018 is celebrated
from April 24 to April 30.
Immunization is
considered to be
one of the most cost-effective and successful
plans in the health industry.
World Immunization Week aims at
highlighting the collective effort which is
needed to ensure that every person gets
protection from diseases which can be
prevented from vaccines.
Theme for the year 2018 is “Protected
Together, Vaccines Work”.
International Buddhist Conference concluded in
Lumbini
International Buddhist Conference concluded in
Lumbini, Nepal, which is the birth place of Gautama
Buddha.
It was organised as part of 2562nd Buddha
Jayanti celebrations.
The basic objective of the conference was to
disseminate teachings of Gautam Buddha
and spread the messages of nonviolence,
brotherhood, co-existence, love and peace to
the international community.
First Ever Joint Army exercise on Malaysian Soil
Commences
Exercise Harimau Shakti 2018, between the Indian
Army and the Malaysian Army commenced on 30
April at Wardieburn Camp, Kuala Lumpur with a
brief and impressive handing over of troops
ceremony.
Lt Col Irwan Ibrahim, Commanding officer
of the 1st Royal Ranger Regiment of
Malaysian Army welcomed the Indian
contingent and wished the Indian and
Malaysian troops for a successful and
mutually beneficial joint exercise.
First phase of the two week long joint
military exercise begin with the formal
handing over of the Regimental Flag to the
Malaysian Army signifying merging of the
two contingents under one Commander.
World Asthma Day 2018: 1 May
World Asthma Day is an annual event organized by
the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) to
improve asthma awareness and care around the
world.
World Asthma Day takes place on the first
Tuesday of May. First World Asthma Day
was held in 1998.
The theme for the year 2018 is “Never too
early, never too late. It’s always the right
time to address airways disease”.
International Labour Day: May 1
The International Labour Day, also known as
International Worker’s Day or May Day is observed
every year on May 1.
The day aims to promote and encourage the
international labour associations, marks the
victory of workers’ movement for eight
hours of work and pay tribute to workers
sacrifices in achieving economic and social
rights all over the world.

The theme of International Labour Day 2018
is “Uniting Workers for Social and
Economic Advancement”.
India- South Africa Business Summit Concludes
in Johannesburg
Minister of Commerce and Industry and Civil
Aviation, Suresh Prabhu, attended India- South
Africa business summit from April 29-30,2018 in
Johannesburg, South Africa.
The visit began with a series of bilateral
meetings: he met Dr. Rob Davies, Minister
of Trade and Industry of South Africa and
ministers from Swaziland, Botswana and
Lesotho.
The Minister highlighted the historical
relations between India and these countries
and pledged to take the economic partnership
forward.
The Minister also met members of India-
South Africa CEOs forum who expressed
confidence in the Government of India’s
efforts to strengthen India-Africa relations
and pledged their support in furthering these
relations.
India into world's top five defence spenders
India has joined the U.S. and China as one of the
world’s five biggest military spenders, reflecting
geopolitical tensions as well as the country’s
reliance on imported weapons and sprawling
personnel costs.
India’s defense spending rose by 5.5 percent
to $63.9 billion in 2017 and has now passed
France, the Stockholm International Peace
Research Institute said in a report
According to the arms watchdog, the five top
military spenders in 2017 were the US,
China, Saudi Arabia, Russia and India.

12th informal meeting of SAARC Finance
Ministers held in Manila
The twelfth informal meeting of SAARC Finance
Ministers was held in Manila, the capital of
Philippines on the sidelines of the 51st Annual
Meeting of Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The meeting was attended by the Finance
Ministers/Heads of Delegations from the
SAARC member states.
Finance Minister of Nepal Yuba Raj
Khatiwada chaired the meeting.
Khatiwada underscored the need of
concerted efforts to attain the objective of
South Asian Economic Union as desired by
the leaders of SAARC.
India ranks 11th in AT Kearney FDI Confidence
Index
India has slipped by three notches to 11th position in
the FDI Confidence Index 2018 of global
consultancy firm A T Kearney.
It said that India fell out of the top 10 for the
first time since 2015.
India was ranked 8th in 2017, while it was at
9th rank in 2016.
Vice President reaches Guatemala
Vice President M. Venkaiah Naidu on Sunday
reached Guatemala as part of his three-nation visit to
Latin America.
Naidu is on a five-day visit to Latin
America’s Guatemala, Peru and Panama
commencing from May 6. This is the Vice
President's first overseas visit after assuming
office last year.
A range of bilateral issues including the
strengthening of institutional mechanisms
for political interactions, multilateral
matters, trade and commerce, investments,
information technology, capacity building,
traditional medicines, space, defence, and
culture are expected to be discussed during
his visit.
NASA launches its latest mission to Mars
NASA has blasted off its
latest Mars lander,
InSight, designed to
perch on the surface and
listen for “Marsquakes”
ahead of eventual human
missions to explore the Red Planet.
The project aims to expand human
knowledge of interior conditions on Mars,
inform efforts to send human explorers there,
and reveal how rocky planets like the Earth
formed billions of years ago.
If all goes as planned, the lander should settle
on the Red Planet on November 26.
Its name, InSight, is short for Interior
Exploration using Seismic Investigations,
Geodesy and Heat Transport. NASA chief
scientist Jim Green said experts already
know that Mars has quakes, avalanches and
meteor strikes.

India ranks 4th in Asia-Pacific on power index
India has ranked fourth out of 25 nations in the Asia-
Pacific region on an index that measures their
overall power. The Lowy Institute Asia Power Index
measures power across 25 countries and territories
in the Asia-Pacific region.
Beijing to hold World Robot Conference
The 2018 World Robot Conference will be held in
Beijing from August 15 to 19.
The event will see over 12,000 competing
teams and 50,000 participants from more
than 10 countries and regions.
A robot competition will be held during the
conference where participants will compete
in five categories.
World Red Cross Day: 8 May
World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is an annual
celebration of the principles of the International Red
Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
World Red Cross Red Crescent Day is
celebrated on 8 May each year.
This date is the anniversary of the birth of
Henry Dunant, who was born 8 May 1828.
He is the founder of International Committee
of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the recipient of
the first Nobel Peace Prize.
India slips to 6th spot in biz optimism index
With business sentiment at the "weakest" in four
years, India slipped to the 6th position globally in
the business optimism index for the first quarter of
this year.
Business optimism is however at an "all-time
high" globally with the index at net 61 per
cent, as per Grant Thornton's quarterly
global business survey.
With a score of 89, India is at the sixth place
in the index.
The top five nations are Austria, Finland,
Indonesia, the Netherlands and the US.

VP Shri Venkaiah Naidu visits World Heritage
city of Old Guatemala
The Vice President of India, Shri M.Venkaiah Naidu
visited the historic Antigua (old) Guatemala city on
May 8, 2018 for understanding how it’s rich heritage

is being maintained since it was declared as a World
Heritage City by the UNESCO in 1979.
Antigua Guatemala was the third capital
built by the Spanish rulers since their
invasion of Guatemala in 1524.
The first two capitals had to be abondoned
by 1541 on account of resistance from the
local warriors and natural calamities
respectively.
Old Guatemala witnessed series of
earthquakes since 1565 and was destroyed
by earthquake Santa Marta in 1773 forcing
the shifting of capital to the present
Guatamela City.
Those who stayed back and others who
returned started reconstruction of Old
Guatemala, restoring most of its mounments.
UNESCO declared it as a World Heritage
City in 1979.

and has got an emerging market for
outbound travel and a tremendous potential
for tourism co-operation with the SCO
region.
India Pavilion Inaugurated at Cannes Film
Festival 2018
The inaugural session of the Indian Pavilion at the
Cannes Film Festival 2018 was held at Cannes,
France.
Hosted by noted actor Shri Sharad Kelkar,
the Indian delegation present consisted of
H.E. Vinay Mohan Kwatra, Ambassador of
India to France.
The agenda of the delegation from India this
year is to showcase diversity in films of our
country while furthering collaborations with
various other countries.
International Nurses Day: 12 May
International Nurses Day (IND) is an international
day celebrated around the world on 12 May (the
anniversary of Florence Nightingale's birth) of each
year, to mark the contributions nurses make to
society.
The International Council of Nurses (ICN)
has celebrated this day since 1965.
The theme for the year 2018 is Nurses A
Voice to Lead – Health is a Human right.

The World Migratory Bird Day was celebrated
throughout the world on 12th May 2018.
The World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated
from now on twice a year, on the Second
Saturday in May and in October. It will also
be observed on 13th October 2018.
The theme for World Migratory Bird Day
2018 is: “Unifying our Voices for Bird
Conservation”. Also 2018 is the “Year of the
Bird”.

WHO launches 'REPLACE' to eliminate trans
fat in foods by 2023
The World Health Organization (WHO) has
launched ‘REPLACE’, a comprehensive plan to
eliminate industrially-produced artificial trans fats
from the global food supply by 2023.
The global health body estimates that every
year, trans fat intake leads to over 5,00,000
deaths worldwide from cardiovascular
diseases.
India to attend the SCO Culture Ministers’ meet
for the first time
The Minister of State for
Culture (I/c) and Minister
of state for Environment,
Forests and Climate
Change, Dr. Mahesh
Sharma will be attending
Shanghai Cooperation
Organization (SCO) Cultural Ministers Meeting at
Sanya in China on 17th of May, 2018.
It is the first time that India would be
attending the SCO Culture Ministers’
Meeting.
The meeting will showcase India’s
initiatives to actively pursue cultural
cooperation with other countries including
SCO countries.
It will also help to promote cultural relations
and people to people contacts with the
individual members of this organization
through cultural exchange programmes.
India became full member of the Shanghai
Cooperation Organization (SCO) on 9th
June, 2017 during the SCO Heads of State
Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan.
India 3rd largest solar market in world: Mercom
India emerged as the third largest solar market in the
world in 2017 behind China and the US, Mercom
Communications India said in a report.
As per the report, India set a new record with
9.6 GW of solar installations in 2017, which
was more than double the 4.3 GW installed
in 2016.
The robust growth boosted the country's total
solar installed capacity to 19.6 GW as of
December 2017, it added.
4th BRICS Ministerial Meeting held in Durban
The BRICS environment ministers have formed a
forum to focus on key strategic global issues such as
the global economy, trade, peace and security and
reform of multilateral institutions.
In a joint statement issued after 4th BRICS
Ministerial Meeting in Durban, BRICS
environment ministers urged developed
countries to continue taking the lead and
support developing countries, including the
transfer of needed technology, in combating
climate change.
The meeting was a part of preparations for
the forthcoming BRICS Summit scheduled
for July 25-27 in Johannesburg, themed:

Guatemala opens embassy in Jerusalem after US
Guatemala officially moved its embassy from Tel
Aviv to Jerusale, becoming the second country to do
so after the U.S. inaugurated its embassy in
Jerusalem.
At the inaguration, which was attended by
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales said
his country is bringing a message of "love,
peace and fraternity" to Israel.
Guatemala was one of seven countries to
vote with the Trump administration and
Israel on the Jerusalem embassy issue at the
United Nations.
The others were Honduras, the Marshall
Islands, Micronesia, Nauru, Palau and Togo.
World AIDS Vaccination Day: 18 May
World AIDS Vaccine Day, also known as HIV
Vaccine Awareness Day, is observed annually
on May 18 ever since it was first celebrated on May
18, 1998.
The day is marked to increase the awareness
of a continued need for a vaccine to fight
against HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.
Russia unveils world's first floating nuclear
power station
Russia has unveiled
the world's first
floating nuclear
power station in the
port of the city of
Murmansk, where it
will be loaded with nuclear fuel before heading to
eastern Siberia.
Constructed by the state nuclear power firm
Rosatom, the 144 by 30 metre holds two
reactors with two 35 megawatt nuclear
reactors that are similar to those used to
power icebreaker ships.
It will be primarily used to power oil rigs as
Russia pus hes further north into the Arctic
to drill for oil and gas and needs electricity
in far-flung locations.
Venezuela's Maduro wins re-election
Venezuela's President Nicolas Maduro was
reelected for a second six-year term in presidential
elections, according to the National Electoral
Council (CNE).
Some 14,638 voting centers have been set up
nationwide for Venezuela's more than 20.5
million eligible voters.
India sixth wealthiest country with total wealth
of $8,230 billion

India is the sixth wealthiest country in the world
with a total wealth of $8,230 billion, while the U.S.
is the richest nation globally, says a report.
According to the AfrAsia Bank Global
Wealth Migration Review, the US is the
wealthiest country in the world with a total
wealth of $62,584 billion, followed by China
($24,803 billion) in the second place and
Japan ($19,522 billion) in third.
Total wealth refers to the private wealth held
by all the individuals living in each country.
It includes all their assets (property, cash,
equities, business interests) minus any
liabilities.
Government funds are excluded from these
figures. Larger countries have an advantage
due to higher populations.
26th BASIC Ministerial meeting of Environment
Ministers in Durban
The 26th BASIC Ministerial Meeting of
Environment Ministers was held in Durban, South
Africa for co-operation to protect the climate for
present and future generations.
The BASIC grouping is a bloc of four
countries – Brazil, South Africa, India and
China – formed by an agreement on
November 28, 2009.
International Bio-diversity Day: 22 May
The International Bio-diversity Day is observed on
22nd May every year to increase understanding and
awareness of biodiversity issues.
The theme for this year is, ‘Celebrating 25
Years of Action for Biodiversity’.
2018 marks the 25th anniversary of the entry
into force of the Convention on Biological
Diversity and to highlight progress made in
the achievement of its objectives at the
national and global levels.
India to attend SCO meet in Pakistan
An Indian delegation
will be among those
attending an anti-
terrorism conference
being held here under
the banner of the
Shanghai Cooperation
Organisation (SCO), Pakistan’s Foreign Office said
on Tuesday.
Pakistan will be hosting its first SCO
meeting, since the country along with India
became a member of the organisation in June
2017.
Experts from the eight SCO member states -
China, Kazakhstan, India, Kyrgyzstan,
Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Pakistan
- as well as representatives of the SCO-
Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (SCO-
RATS) will participate in the three-day
meeting.
India 145th among 195 countries in healthcare
access, quality: Lancet
India ranks 145th among 195 countries in terms of
quality and accessibility of healthcare in 2016,
behind its neighbours like China, Bangladesh, Sri
Lanka and Bhutan, according to a Lancet study.
In 2016, India’s healthcare access and
quality scored at 41.2 (up from 24.7 in 1990).
It said that Goa and Kerala had the highest
scores in 2016, each exceeding 60 points,
whereas Assam and Uttar Pradesh had the
lowest, each below 40.

The five countries with the highest levels of
healthcare access and quality in 2016 were
Iceland (97.1 points), Norway (96.6), the
Netherlands (96.1), Luxembourg (96.0), and
Finland and Australia (each with 95.9).

Mission Innovation (MI) Ministerial
30 months ago on November 30th, 2015, leader of 20
countries came together to launch Mission
Innovation (MI), a landmark 5 year commitment to
accelerate the pace of innovation and make clean
energy widely affordable and accessible worldwide.
India is the founding member of this forum
and is a partner in the Steering Committee.
MI now comprises 23 economies and the
European Commission, representing the
European Union, and collectively accounts
for more than 80 percent of the world’s total
public financing of clean energy R&D.
This week Ministers and high level delegates
from these countries converged at Malmo,
Sweden for the 3rd Mission Innovation
Ministerial from 22-23 May, 2018.

India moves one notch up to 44th rank in IMD's
competitiveness rankings
India has moved one notch higher, to the 44th place
in terms of competitiveness, in the annual rankings
compiled by International Institute for Management
Development (IMD) which placed the US in the top
slot.
The US became the most competitive
economy globally driven by its strength in
economic performance and infrastructure,
followed by Hong Kong and Singapore in
the second and third place, respectively.
India is ranked the 12th most competitive
economy out of the 14 Asian countries on the
list.
This year 63 countries are ranked with
Cyprus and Saudi Arabia making their first
appearance.
5th India CLMV Business Conclave held at
Phnom Penh, Cambodia
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government
of India along with Ministry of Commerce of
Cambodia organized the 5th India-CLMV Business
Conclave in Phnom Penh on 21-22 May 2018.
After four rounds of the Business Conclave
in India, this initiative was brought by
Department of Commerce of Government of
India to Cambodia,for greater participation
from the region.
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)
is the institutional partner of the event.
CLMV is a group of Cambodia, Myanmar,
Vietnam and Lao PDR.

blindness of infectious origin, the World Health
Organisation (WHO) said.

Trachoma was the second leading cause of
preventable blindness in the Himalayan
nation in the 1980s.
In 2002, the Government of Nepal had
stepped up the efforts to eliminate trachoma
with the establishment of a national
trachoma programme.
Columbia formally joins NATO
One year after reaching partnership deal through a
peace agreement with South America, Columbia has
has formally joined the North Atlantic Treaty
Organization.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization is an
intergovernmental military alliance between

based on the North Atlantic Treaty that was
signed on 4 April 1949.
Netherlands joins Solar Alliance
The Netherlands has become the 64th signatory
member of the International Solar Alliance (ISA).
The joint statement issued hailed the
Netherlands as India’s “Gateway to Europe”.
India also welcomed the Netherlands as the
Partner Country for the TechSummit in
2019.
India launches 2nd IT corridor in China
India has launched its second IT corridor in China to
cash in on the burgeoning Chinese software market.
The National Association of Software and
Services Companies (NASSCOM) has
established one more Digital Collaborative
Opportunities Plaza (SIDCOP) platform in
China in an effort to provide market access
to Indian IT firms in the huge Chinese
market.
Hamburg to host 2018 Global Wind Summit
The first edition of the Global Wind Summit will
be held in Hamburg from September 25-28, 2018.
The organisers of the four-day event are
expecting speakers from about 100
countries, including India, China, the US,
Spain and Denmark.
The conference on wind is the largest and
most important meeting of the wind
industry worldwide.
108th session of UNWTO Executive council in
San Sebastian
The Minister of
State
(Independent
Charge) for
Tourism, Shri K. J. Alphons along with a
delegation of senior officials attended the 108th
session of UNWTO Executive Council from 23rd to
25th May 2018 held in San Sebastian, Spain.
The Executive council decided that in order
to address new challenge and trends, the
organization will pay special attention to
scaling up innovation and digitization in the
sector.
During the three day Executive Council
meeting, Sh. K. J. Alphons chaired the
‘Programme and Budget Committee’
meeting of UNWTO.

The World Tourism Organization
(UNWTO) is the United Nations agency
responsible for the promotion of
responsible, sustainable and universally
accessible tourism.
The UNWTO Executive Council represents
the Organization’s governing body whose

task is to take all necessary measures in
consultation with the Secretary-General, for
implementation of its own decisions and
recommendations of the Assembly and
report thereupon to the Assembly.
The Council meets at least twice a year, the
next to be held in Bahrain.
The council consists of 30 Full Members.

General of UNWTO.
International Conference on the TRIPS CBD
Linkage 7-8 June 2018 in Geneva
India has taken the lead in seeking to revive WTO
discussions on issues related to preventing theft of
traditional knowledge.
Government of India, along with the Centre
for WTO Studies, Indian Institute of Foreign
Trade and the South Centre (an inter-
governmental organisation based in
Geneva), are organising an International
Conference on TRIPS- CBD Linkage in
Geneva on 7-8 June 2018.
Brazil and South Africa are some of the other
countries that have joined hands with India
on this crucial initiative.
Swachh Bharat Summer Internship
Following the Prime Minister’s clarion call on 2nd
October 2014 for each individual to devote at least
100 hours to Swachhata through the year, Ministry
of Drinking Water and Sanitation (MDWS) in
association with Ministry of Human Resource
Development (MHRD) and Ministry of Youth
Affairs and Sports (MYAS) has launched the
Swachh Bharat Summer Internship – a novel and
first of it’s kind initiative.
The internship period commences from May
1, 2018 and ends on July 31, 2018.
The programme aims to engage millions of
youngsters across the country, to encourage
them to contribute to the Swachh Bharat
Mission in the spirit of a true janandolan.

2500 MW for three years
The Government kicks off a Pilot Scheme for
Procurement of Aggregate Power of 2500 MW on
competitive basis for 3 (three) years under medium
term i.e. from generators with commissioned
projects but without Power Purchase Agreement.
The Ministry of Power had recently issued
the model bid documents, model PAPP and
PPSA on 6th April, 2018. The Guidelines for
the said scheme were issued on 10th April,
2018.

14 of world's 15 most polluted cities in India
The WHO global air pollution database reveals that
India has 14 out of the 15 most polluted cities in the
world in terms of PM 2.5 concentrations, with the
worst being Kanpur.
Kanpur topped the 2016 list with a PM 2.5
concentration of 173 micrograms per cubic
metre, followed by Faridabad, Varanasi and
Gaya.
14 out of top 15 cities are Indian. Ali Subah
Al Salem (Kuwait) ranked 15th.
Cabinet approves Doubling of Investment Limit
for Senior Citizens PMVVY

extending the investment limit from Rs 7.5 lakhs to
Rs 15 lakhs as well as extension of time limits for
subscription from 4thMay 2018 to 31stMarch, 2020
under the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandan Yojana
(PMVVY) as part of Government's commitment for
financial inclusion and social security.
Further, as a boost to the Social Security
initiatives for senior citizens, the investment
limit of Rs 7.5 lakh per family in the existing
scheme is enhanced to Rs 15 lakh per senior
citizen in the modified PMVVY, thereby
providing a larger social security cover to the
Senior citizens.
It will enable upto Rs.10000 Pension per
month for Senior Citizens.
The PMVVY is being implemented through
Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) to
provide social security during old age and
protect elderly persons aged 60 years and
above against a future fall in their interest
income due to uncertain market conditions.
The scheme provides an assured pension
based on a guaranteed rate of return of 8%
per annum for ten years, with an option to opt
for pension on a monthly / quarterly / half
yearly and annual basis.
The differential return, i.e. the difference
between the return generated by LIC and the
assured return of 8% per annum would be
borne by Government of India as subsidy on
an annual basis.
Biggest Airport, after Mumbai, to be developed
in Mopa, Goa
A joint team of the Airports Authority of India
(AAI) and Commerce Logistics Department will
visit Goa on 7th-8thMay 2018 to facilitate the
development of cargo hubs at the new airport to be
constructed at Mopa in Goa.
The four coastal states in the western part of
the country, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala
and Goa, will benefit greatly from the

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs,

has given its approval for the Umbrella Scheme,
"Green Revolution – Krishonnati Yojana" in
agriculture sector beyond 12th Five Year Plan for the
period from 2017-18 to 2019-20 with the Central
Share of Rs. 33,269.976 crore.
The Umbrella scheme comprises of 11
Schemes/Missions.
These schemes look to develop the
agriculture and allied sector in a holistic and
scientific manner to increase the income of
farmers by enhancing production,
productivity andbetter returns on produce.
The Schemes will be continued with an

through ‘UMANG app’.
On clicking ‘View Passbook’ option, it
requires PPO Number and Date of Birth
information to be entered by the pensioner.
After successful validation of the
information fed, an OTP will be sent to the
registered mobile number of the pensioner.

For the conservation of Indus dolphins - one of the

organised census on their population.
Found only in India and Pakistan, the Indus
dolphins are confined to only a 185 km
stretch between Talwara and Harike Barrage
in India’s Beas river in Punjab.
Officials from the Department of Forests and
Wildlife Preservation, Punjab and WWF-
India are currently working in two teams and
will come to an estimate regarding the
dolphin population over the five-day
exercise.
GIS technology to strengthen Namami Gange
Programme
National Mission for Clean Ganga has brought on
board Survey of India, the oldest scientific
department in the country set up in 1767, to facilitate
the Ganga rejuvenation task by using Geographic
Information System (GIS) technology.
Through the project which has been
approved in the EC meeting at an estimated
cost of Rs. 86.84 crore, NMCG aims to
strengthen planning and implementation at
national/state/local levels.
The project includes use of Digital Elevation
Model (DEM) technology which ensures
accurate data collection, an important aspect
for river basin management planning.
DEM technology enables identification of
entire topography of an area making it easy
for policy makers to analyse the available
data thereby supporting the decision-making
process.

Kovind becomes first President to visit Siachen in
14 years
The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind,
visited Siachen Base Camp on May 10, 2018 and
addressed the soldiers posted there.
He also visited the Kumar Post. President
Kovind is the second President of India to
visit Siachen.
The previous visit was undertaken by
President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in April 2004.
This makes President Kovind the first
President to travel to Siachen in 14 years.
Madhya Pradesh Gets India's First Smart Cities
Control Centre
In a major step towards realising the centre's smart
city mission (SCM), the Madhya Pradesh
government has launched the country's first
Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) for
all seven smart cities of the state in Bhopal.
The ICCCwould enable the authorities to
monitor the status of various smart civic
amenities in real-time through the sensors

Reverse Buyers Sellers Meet (RBSM) commencing
from May 15 in Mumbai for promoting export of

Frozen Semen Station being set up in

Laying the foundation stone of the frozen semen
station in Maranga, Purnea Union Minister of
Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare Shri Radha Mohan
Singh said that the frozen semen station is being set
up at a cost of Rs 64 crore under the Rashtriya Gokul
Mission with 100% contribution from the Central
Government.
Out of this, Rs 20 crore has already been
released.
Currently, the artificial insemination is being
done by CMOFED (Sudha) in Bihar. For
artificial insemination, semen from high
genetic merit bulls is needed.
Shri Singh elaborated that the frozen semen
station in Purnea will be the first state-of-the-
art semen production center of the country.
The Minister said the RashtriyaGokul
Mission was initiated in December 2014
with an aim to conserve and develop
indigenous breeds.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh has
launched Vikas Yatra from Dantewada.
Addressing the media, the Chief Minister
said, "This yatra is to tell people about the
development the state has witnessed. We
will also work to further increase the growth
of the state in coming days.
The chief minister, during his Vikas Yatra,
will distribute free pesticides to 5.5 lakh
labourers.
Also, 50 lakh families will be given
smartphones as part of the Chief Minister's

UT of Lakshadweep and Rs 526.14 crore for
the state of Rajasthan.
The total assistance approved was Rs
1,161.17 crores.
UNDP to set up skill development centre in
Hyderabad
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
will soon set up a skill development centre at
'Bharosa,' an integrated support centre for distressed
women and children in Hyderabad.
Last year, the Hyderabad Police had signed
an agreement with UNDP under the 'Disha'
project to build capacities and skills of
women affected by violence to help make
them economically self-sufficient.
'Bharosa,' an initiative of Hyderabad City
Police, is a state-of-the-art centre to support
women and children who are victims of
violence.

Establishment of National Institute of Mental
Health Rehabilitation at Bhopal
The Union Cabinet Chaired by Prime Minister Shri
Narendra Modi has approved the establishment of
National Institute of Mental Health Rehabilitation
(NIMHR) at Bhopal as a Society under the Societies
Registration Act, 1860 under the aegis of the
Department of Empowerment of Persons with
Disabilities.
The estimated cumulative cost of the project
is Rs. 179.54 crore in first three years. This
includes non-recurring expenditure of Rs.
128.54 crore and recurring expenditure of
Rs. 51 crore.
The main objectives of the NIMHR are to
provide rehabilitation services to the persons
with mental illness, capacity development in
the area of mental health rehabilitation,
policy framing and advanced research in
mental health rehabilitation.

railway station
Guwahati now has India's first railway station run by
solar power. The project of installing solar panels
was commissioned last year in April 2017.
Around 2352 solar modules with a capacity
of generating 700 kwp has been set up over
the roof of the Guwahati railway station.
Solar panels have been installed at the roof-
top solar power plant.
The solar-powered station is aimed at
reducing carbon-footprint as well as cut

Environment Ministry Forms 19 Teams for
Cleaning of Beaches, River Fronts and Lakes
In the build-up to the World Environment Day 2018,
the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate
Change, has formed 19 teams to take up cleaning of
beaches, river fronts and lakes in the country.
Cleaning up of around 24 beaches in nine (9)
coastal states (list attached) and cleaning of
river fronts in 24 identified polluted stretches
in 19 states (list attached) will be
undertaken.
Besides the listed rivers, a special cleanliness
drives will be carried out at Yamuna
riverfront in Delhi. Certain lakes and water
bodies have also been identified for
cleaning.
An amount of Rs. 10 lakh has been
earmarked for each stretch of beach, river
front and lake.
Creation of Directorate General of Trade
Remedies (DGTR) in Department of Commerce
Department of Commerce formally issued
notification for creation of Directorate General of
Trade Remedies (DGTR) in the Ministry of
Commerce and Industry.
Hon’ble Commerce and Industry Minister
Sh. Suresh Prabhu has given his approval for
creation of DGTR in Department of
Commerce, consequent upon amendment
carried out by Government of India to the
Government of India (Allocation of
Business) Rules, 1961 on May 7, 2018 in this
regard.
DGTR will be the apex National Authority
for administering all trade remedial
measures including anti-dumping,
countervailing duties and safeguard
measures.
The DGTR will bring Directorate General of
Anti-dumping and Allied duties (DGAD),
Directorate General of Safeguards (DGS)
and Safeguards (QR) functions of DGFT
into its fold by merging them into one single
national entity.
It will also provide trade defence support to
our domestic industry and exporters in
dealing with increasing instances of trade
remedy investigations instituted against
them by other countries.

During the last decade, India has attained first
position with around 14% average annual growth in
the export of fish & fishery products. Fish
production in India has also grown by 27% in 2014-
18 as compared to 2010-14.
This was stated by the Union Minister of
Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shri
Radha Mohan Singh while addressing the
Fisheries Ministers of Coastal states and

Shri Singh further added that owing to low
prospects of fisheries production along the
coast, the government has decided to
promote deep sea fishing and has introduced
a sub-component 'Assistance for Deep Sea
Fishing' under the Blue Revolution.
Advanced and modern deep sea fishing
vessels will be built in the country by
indigenous technology.
He informed that in the first year, central
funds amounting to more than Rs 312 crore
have been released for the implementation of
this scheme benefitting fishermen from
states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and
Gujarat.

Modi inaugurates hydro project in Kashmir
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a
hydroelectric power plant in the state of Jammu and
Kashmir, amid protests from neighbour Pakistan
which says the project on a river flowing into
Pakistan will disrupt water supplies.
The 330 megawatt Kishanganga hydropower
station, work on which started in 2009, is one
of the projects that India has fast-tracked in
the volatile state amid frosty ties between the
nuclear-armed countries.
Modi, who is on a day-long visit to the state,
also flagged off the construction of the 14 km
(9 mile)-long Zojila tunnel to provide all-
weather connectivity between the cities of
Srinagar, Kargil and Leh.
The government said it would be the longest
road tunnel in India and Asia's longest two-
way tunnel, to be constructed at a cost of $1
billion.

Railways to use AI to control air circulation in
Manipur tunnel
For the first time, the railways will use artifical
intelligence to control air circulation, signages and
even supervision and maintenance work in the 10.28
km-long tunnel in Imphal as part of its 110 km
railway line from Jiribam to Manipur's capital city.
While the national transporter is already
using this technique to detect flaws or
problems in the signalling system, this is the
first time that such a technology will be used
in a tunnel in the country.
The system will control air circulation in the
system, along with other aspects.
It will alert the passenger in case of fire and
help us in quick evacuation in case of any

Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala
As the death toll in the virus-induced fever in north
Kerala rises to nine, the National Virology Institute
in Pune has confirmed that the deceased were
infected with Nipah virus (NiV).
This is the first time the virus, which has high
fatality rate and spreads mainly through bats,
pigs and other animals, has been detected in
the state.
Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a newly-
emerging zoonosis (a disease which can be
transmitted to humans from animals) that
causes severe disease in both animals and
humans. The natural host of the virus are
fruit bats of the Pteropodidae Family,
Pteropus genus.
NiV was first identified during an outbreak
of disease that took place in Kampung
Sungai Nipah, Malaysia in 1998. On this
occasion, pigs were the intermediate hosts.

PM inaugurates Eastern Peripheral Expressway
and Phase-I of Delhi-Meerut Expressway
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi dedicated
to the nation, two newly built expressways in the
Delhi NCR Region.
The first of these is the 14 lane, access
controlled, Phase-I of the Delhi-Meerut
Expressway, stretching from Nizamuddin

The Delhi Meerut Expressway, once

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE),
will contribute towards the twin objectives
of decongesting and de-polluting the
national capital by diverting traffic not

GST Council approves turning GSTN into a
government entity
The GST Council has approved making GST
Network (GSTN) a government entity by taking
over stakes held by private entities, Finance Minister
Arun Jaitley said at the end of the 27th meeting of
the council.
Jaitley said the GST Network or GSTN
currently is 24.5 per cent owned by the
central government and a similar percentage
is held by state governments collectively.
The remaining 51 per cent is with five
private financial institutions -- HDFC Ltd,
HDFC Bank Ltd, ICICI Bank Ltd, NSE
Strategic Investment Co and LIC Housing
Finance Ltd.
The council has agreed to a proposal of
buying out the stake of private entities to
make GSTN a government-owned entity, he
said adding the central government will own
50 per cent and the remaining would be

New monetary limits for public sector banks to
report frauds to CBI

Vigilance Commission (CVC).
Frauds of minimum Rs 3 crore to Rs 25
crore, up from Rs 15 crore, have to be
reported to either the CBI's Anti-Corruption
Branch (in case staff involvement is prima
facie evident) or to the Economic Offences
Wing (if employees involvement is prima
facie not evident) respectively.
Cases of frauds involving more than Rs 25
crore and up to Rs 50 crore should be given
to the CBI's Banking Security and Fraud Cell
(BSFC).
The cases of more than Rs 50 crore should
be lodged with the Joint Director (Policy),
CBI.

says Fitch
India's economic growth will accelerate to 7.3 per

Fitch said that the money supply has

RBI puts Dena Bank under prompt corrective
action
Reserve Bank has initiated prompt corrective action
against public sector lender Dena Bank in view of
high non-performing loans, restricting the bank from
giving fresh credit and new hiring.
The public sector lender reported widening
of its net loss to Rs 1,225.42 crore in the
March quarter on mounting bad loans and
higher provisioning to cover them.
The RBI has initiated similar action against
other public sector banks, including IDBI
Bank, Indian Overseas Bank and UCO Bank
before this.

in the world, with migrant workers from the country
sending home USD 69 billion in 2017.

The telecom department has approved the merger of
Norwegian telecom major's India arm - Telenor
India - with India's leading carrier Bharti Airtel.
The telecom department has transferred all
licenses belonging to Telenor India, and its
liabilities to Bharti Airtel as well. The
Competition Commission of India,
Securities & Exchange Board of India, the
stock exchanges and National Company Law
Tribunal have already approved the
acquisition.
RBI puts deposit, lending restrictions on
Allahabad Bank
State-run Allahabad Bank said that the Reserve
Bank has imposed restrictions on its lending to risky
assets and raising high-cost deposits in vie w of
deteriorating financial health.
The directive has come within days of the
RBI imposing similar restrictions on another
state-run lender Dena Bank, which is under
the Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) of the
central bank.
The central bank asked Allahabad Bank,
which is already under the PCA mechanism,
to restrict expansion of risk weighted
average and reduce exposure to un-rated and
high-risk advances, the filing said.
As many as 11 of 21 state-owned banks are
under the PCA of the Reserve Bank due to
their weak financials.
NTPC signs MoU with Government of Bihar
With an aim to improve
the performance of
Power Sector in Bihar, a
Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU)
was signed between the Government of Bihar (GoB)
and NTPC Limited at Patna in the presence of the
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for
Power and New & Renewable Energy, Shri R. K.

The MoU envisages transfer of Barauni
Thermal Power Station (720 MW) to NTPC.
In addition to this, Bihar State Power
Generation Company’s (BSPGCL) equities
in Kanti Bijlee Utpadan Nigam Limited
(KBUN) & Nabinagar Power Generating
Company (Pvt.) Limited (NPGC) will also
be transferred to NTPC.
All the three power generation facilities are
envisaged to be transferred to NTPC from
the effective date to be notified by
Government of Bihar through a Statutory
Transfer Scheme.
The transfer of these power stations to NTPC
will result in their optimal & efficient
utilization, bring the tariff down and benefit
the people of Bihar at large.

PNB posts biggest ever quarterly loss of 13,417 cr
in Q4
Scam-hit Punjab National Bank (PNB) has posted
largest ever quarterly loss of Rs 13,416.91 crore for
January-March period, mainly on account of high
provisioning for bad loans.
The bank had reported a staggering
standalone profit of Rs 261.90 crore in the
fourth quarter of 2016-17.
The total income for the fourth quarter also
declined to Rs 12,945.68 crore from ₹
14,989.33 crore in the year-ago period.
RBI imposes penalty on Cooperative bank
The Reserve Bank of India has imposed a penalty of
₹50,000 on Universal Co-operative Urban Bank
Ltd, Mancherial, Telangana with respect to
violations on loans and advances.
The apex bank in a release said the
Cooperative Bank had violated its directive
and guidelines on loans and advances to
directors and their relatives.
Cabinet approves Corpus for Micro Irrigation
Fund with NABARD
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs
chaired by the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi
today has approved an initial Corpus of Rs.5,000
crore for setting up of a dedicated “Micro Irrigation
Fund” (MIF) with NABARD under Pradhan
MantriKrishiSinchayeeYojana (PMKSY).
The allocation of Rs. 2,000 crore and Rs.
3,000 crore will be utilised during 2018-19
and 2019-20 respectively.
NABARD will extend the loan to State
Governments during this period. B
orrowings from NABARD shall be paid
back in 7 years including the grace period of
two years.
The lending rate under MIF has been
proposed at 3% lower than the cost of raising
the fund by NABARD.
Reserve Bank of India slaps Rs 5 cr. fine on South
Indian Bank
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has slapped a
penalty of Rs 50 million on South Indian Bank
Limited for non-compliance with the directions
issued by it.
The non-compliance pertains to Income
Recognition and Asset Classification
(IRAC) norms, Know Your Customer
(KYC) norms and treasury function.
Further, the bank is also pulled up for
deficiencies in its compliance function and

India's economy is projected to grow 7.6 per cent in
fiscal year 2018-19, remaining the fastest growing
economy in the world, according to a UN report.
The UN World Economic Situation and
Prospects (WESP) as of mid-2018, said GDP
growth in India is expected to climb to 7.5
and 7.6 per cent in fiscal years 2017-18 and
2018-19 respectively.
This is a substantial recovery from the 6.7
per cent growth India registered in fiscal year
2017.
India drags US to WTO over steel, aluminium
duties

an official said.
India has stated that the decision will impact

GDP growth in Q4 of FY18 seen at 7.4%: Icra
Rating agency Icra expects GDP growth in January-
March 2017-18 at 7.4 per cent on account of good
rabi crop harvest and improved corporate earnings,
up from 7.2 per cent in the third quarter.
The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is
scheduled to come out with GDP estimate
for the fourth quarter (Q4) of fiscal 2017-18
and provisional annual estimates for the year
2017-18 on May 31.
As per Icra, the growth of the Indian gross
value added (GVA) at basic prices in year-
on-year (YoY) terms is likely to record a
considerable recovery to 7.3 per cent in Q4
FY2018.
Moody’s downgrades PNB’s deposit ratings
Moody’s Investors Service has downgraded the
local and foreign currency deposit ratings of fraud-
hit Punjab National Bank to Ba1/NP from Baa3/P-3.
The global credit rating agency has also
downgraded the bank’s baseline credit
assessment (BCA) and Adjusted BCA to B1
from Ba3.

M.T Vasudevan Nair Wins ONV Literary Prize
Jnanpith laureate M T Vasudevan Nair has won this
year's annual ONV Literary Prize, instituted in
memory of iconic poet late O N V Kurup, for his
overall contributions to Malayalam literature.
The award, comprising a cash prize of Rs
three lakh, citation and a plaque, was
instituted by the ONV Cultural Academy.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan would
present the award to Nair, popularly known
as M T among his admirers.

Leading vaccine maker Bharat Biotech has received
the National Technology Award for 2018 from the
Central government's Technology Development
Board for its Rotavac vaccine.
This prestigious award for innovative
technologies, successfully developed and
commercialized from India, was presented
by President Ram Nath Kovind at the
Technology Day ceremony held at Vigyan in
New Delhi.
Launched in 2015 Rotavac was introduced
into the Universal Immunization Programme

Nobel laureate and noted economist Muhammad
Yunus has been honoured with the 11th Kalinga
Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) Humanitarian
Award 2018 at a function held in Bhubaneswar.

Indore is the cleanest city: cleanliness survey
The Swachh Survekshan 2018 assessed 4203 Urban
Local Bodies and was organized by the Ministry of
Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), under the
aegis of the Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban).
The exercise undertaken between 4th January
2018 to 10th March, 2018 enhanced
the scope to cover a record number of
Urban Local Bodies impacting around 40
crore urban citizens across length and
breadth of the country by 2700 assessors.
As compared to 2017 where Swachh
Survekshan was conducted in 434 cities, this
year the scope was enhanced manifold.

'Raaya' becomes India's official entry for Cannes
A short film, 'Raaya', about an autistic girl has been
chosen as India's official entry into the Cannes Film
Festival 2018.
The film is scheduled to exhibit at the 71st
Cannes Festival on May 18, second to last
day of the festival.
'Raaya' has already bagged the 'Special
Festival Mention Award' at Dada Saheb
Phalke Film Festival 2018. Also, it has been
shortlisted for other International film
festivals in Los Angeles and Romania.
The film is produced by Rakesh Gupta and
written by hypnotherapist Richa Agarwal.

Indian botanist Kamaljit S. Bawa, president of
Bengaluru-based non-profit Ashoka Trust for
Research in Ecology and the Environment
(ATREE), received the prestigious Linnean Medal

May 24.
Dr. Bawa is the first Indian to win the award
