A newsletter is a marker of the development and growth of an institution and indicates its future
developmental plans. I take immense pleasure in the initiative taken by the Newsletter Committee to bring
out the CUPB Newsletter.
Starting from scratch in 2009, the university, set-up in an educationally backward area of Punjab, made a
quantum leap by initiating M.Phil.-Ph.D. Integrated Programs in various streams within a few months of its
inception. The university remains committed to its ideals of interactive, experiential techniques, scientic
temperament and socially relevant research and teaching initiatives.
The academic year 2012-13 was a time of great challenge for us, but with the untiring efforts and active
cooperation of my colleagues we have been able to entrench the campus with all the necessary facilities of
any institution of higher learning with a state of the art Computer Centre, Molecular Genetics Laboratory,
Tissue Culture Laboratories, Environmental Sciences Laboratory, Chemical Sciences Laboratory, Central
Instrumentation Laboratory and a Language Laboratory. The environment has never been compromised
while creating infrastructural facilities like Auditorium, Seminar Hall, Library, Reading Rooms, Fitness
Centre and Hostels at the City Campus of the University. Beautiful landscaping with lush green lawns,
power wind mills and optimum use of solar power speaks of our commitment to build a green campus.
In September 2013, internationally acclaimed agricultural economist, policy-adviser and Padam
Bhushan Awardee, Dr. Sardara Singh Johl was appointed as the rst Chancellor of university by the
President of India. Former Vice-Chancellor of Punjabi University, Patiala and Punjab Agricultural
University, Ludhiana, Prof. Johl, with his rich experience in research and administration would bring
immense benet to the university.
Apart from academics, the university has given due importance to co-curricular activities. Several
eminent scholars from diverse elds were invited to deliver lectures and interact with faculty and students.
On different occasions, competitions like photography, dance, song, debate and painting were successfully
organised. Work is in progress at the main campus of 500 acres situated at village Ghudda on Bathinda-
Badal road. Once completed, the university will be a model eco-friendly institution of academics and
research, not only focusing on issues concerning the Malwa region of Punjab, but also of global importance.
I am condent that in the coming years, the Central University of Punjab would establish itself as a
leading institution of higher learning not only at the national level but also at the international platform.
I congratulate the Newsletter Committee for vibrantly projecting a comprehensive picture of the events
through this newsletter which forms the fabric of this university and would regularly disseminate
information about this university’s activities.
