Market Day

Year 9 Commerce and Year 11

Business Studies were provided

wonderful opportunities to put

their learning to the test by

creating and marketing their own

stall for our annual Market Day.

There was exceptional

innovation and great marketing

strategies on display as students

used business design principles

to sell their products. Other

students were also involved by

assessing the stalls on display for

effectiveness, impact and quality.

Thank you to Ms Carroll for all

her efforts in making the day a

success!

Scholarship Assembly

Ms Kalpage and Ms Khan worked

tirelessly to coordinate our

recent Scholarship Assembly.

Congratulations to the 33

successful recipients of the 2016

Scholarships and a heartfelt

thank you to our very generous

15 community sponsors. What

wonderful community support!

Cross Country

Good luck to all of our Cross

Country runners today. Students

have been preparing with

passion and we look forward to

some personal bests and broken

records!

Tell Them From Me Survey

Tell Them From Me is an online

survey system that helps schools

capture the views of students,

teachers and parents. More

information can be obtained in

the letter below. Please note that

this is NOT compulsory and you

request that your student not

participate by contacting the

school.

Ms M. Pikoulas

Principal

“Tell Them From Me” Survey - Benefits For Our School

The Tell Them From Me surveys provide school principals and school leaders with insight into student

engagement and wellbeing, and the impact of teaching practices at their school, from the perspective of students,

teachers and parents. Data collected from the survey responses are compiled into reports for school leaders. These

reports are provided to schools within three business days of the surveys closing. The reports provide information

that can help schools in their annual planning and reporting activities, by helping to identify emerging issues and

plan for improvement.

"We found the survey easy to administer. The depth of information and the ability to manipulate and analyse the

data is fabulous. In particular, the data gave us the ability to inform our wellbeing program at the school."

Margaret Mulcahy, Executive Principal of Coonamble High School (A Connected Communities School)

Please take the time to read

through and acquaint yourself and

discuss with your child/children

the relevant booklet(s). If you

have any questions or require

clarification on anything please

contact me on the school phone

number.

Any student who may not have

received their copy, or misplaced

the one they received, can see me

for a copy. Also, for your ease of

access each of the assessment

booklets has been uploaded onto

the school website. These can be

found in the Curriculum and

Activities section on the main

page under Assessment and

Reporting, where each Year

Groups is located.

Holidays

I wish everyone a happy and safe

holiday period commencing after

the last day of term one on Friday

8th April. All students return to

school for term two on

Wednesday 27th April.

Bring Back the

Bush

Reflections - Year 8 Red and 8

Orange Excursion to Lizard Log,

Western Sydney Parkland.

On Friday 4th of March, Mr. Tang

and Mrs. Kalpage accompanied

students in 8 Orange and 8 Red

for an excursion to the Lizard Log

which is a natural bushland. There

were lots of natural features,

which include different types of

animals, such as lizards, snakes,

worms and many others.

We left our school at 11am. It took

us 45 minutes to travel to the

Lizard Log. When we arrived, Josh

guided us to the grass area and

had a talk with students about the

Lizard Log. He told us that we

were going to plant trees. I was

thinking ‘what?’ in my mind,

because I have never planted a

tree before. Josh then showed us

different kinds of plants and their

names, for example, Bamboo.

After knowing all the names of

plants, we realised there were 200

plants waiting for us! Yes, 200

plants, which meant each of us,

needed to plant 4 plants at least.

Josh started showing us how to

plant.

Josh had already dug the holes so

all we needed to do was:

1. Put the plants in the holes and

covered it up with soil

2. Water the plants

3. Put three sticks around the

plant and use a metal hammer to

punch the sticks into the soil

4. Covered the stick with a bag

which formed a triangle shape.

Assessment Booklets

All year groups (Years 7 to 12)

have now received their

Assessment Booklets for 2016.

Year 12 (HSC) received theirs

Term 4 2015. Each of these

booklets include all of their

assessment tasks and

requirements specific for each of

their subjects for the year.

Also included within each of the

booklets are the rules and

expectations associated with

meeting requirements. This is

specifically covering issues such

as absence from an assessment

task, illness and misadventure,

submitting tasks, ethical practice

such as plagiarism, and rules on

examinations.

Each of the year groups was

presented with a talk on these

various requirements and issues

including an explanation of the

Explanation of Absence from an

Assessment Task form.

Alma Garibovic, Pauline Bal and Cora

Athey enjoy the planting

The steps are:

1. Place the plant in the ready dug

holes

2. Backfill the hole. Backfill

around the root ball, lightly

packing the soil as you go

3. Place two sticks into the ground

by hammering them

4. Place a rabbit proof bag over it

5. Place another stick in the bag by

hammering it

6. Water the plant.

We started planting trees with a

goal of 200. As Cumberland

students worked together as a

team in the hot sun we ended up

planting around 100 trees. We

were proud of that.

As we were farewelled we

received a free shirt from Lizard

Log and then came back to school.

Ms A. Garibovic

Year 8 Student

On the 4th of March two year 8

classes went to Lizard Log to plant

trees, a part of the topic we are

learning called ‘Dig It Up’.

Once we reached Lizard Log we

were introduced to Josh, a worker

at Lizard Log. He explained to us

why trees are important and how

they grow. He then told us the

names of native trees and where

they came from.

We then all got up and watched

Josh show us how to plant a tree.

We put on plastic gloves and

started planting. After about 1

hour I counted my plants. I had

planted 5 plants already! Then I

heard someone yelling out it’s

lunch time. I ran to wash my

hands and started to have my

lunch. To conclude our excursion,

Josh gave all of us a T-shirt as a

souvenir and we took photos

together before cleaning up the

rubbish and boarding the bus to

go back to the school.

Wauchope is Coming!

The annual Cumberland v

Wauchope visit is nearly upon us

– again!

For those of you who are first-

time Cumberland parents this

year, a little background

information:

Each year since 1976 there has

been an annual

sporting/cultural/social

exchange between the students

and staff of Cumberland and

Wauchope High Schools.

Wauchope is a small country

town about 20 km inland from

Port Macquarie on the North

Coast. Each year 100 students are

selected from each school to

make up the various teams that

will compete for the Jack Parsons

Memorial Shield.

We take turns hosting the event

and this year it is Cumberland’s

turn to provide the

accommodation.

• Boys Hockey v TBA

The teams that have been

knocked out of their competitions

now move forward in

preparation for Wauchope 2016,

looking forward to solid wins.

Sydney West News

Congratulations to two Year 12

students - Kevin Shin and Sakie

Takenaka (Reserve) who were

selected for the Sydney West

Basketball Teams. They will take

part in the NSW Combine High

Schools Championships in May,

Term 2. This is an amazing

achievement and no doubt they

will both continue to be a valued

members of our Wauchope

Basketball teams. Well done

Kevin and Sakie!

Congratulations to Jordan Peisley

(Year 11) for winning the SW

Lawn Bowls and making it to the

CHS competition to be held at

Warilla on 8th and 9th June 2016.

Cross Country 2016

Cross Country Day will be on

Friday, 1st April 2016. This year,

we have changed the carnival to

‘Competitors Only’. We are taking

the top 20 students in each age

group (based on class times) out

of class for Session 2 and 3 only.

Once selected, students will be

given a permission note. Students

will also be rewarded for making

the top 20 with a BBQ afterwards.

Good luck to all competitors

PDHPE and Sport

The main reason why this

interschool event has been able

to be maintained for the last 40

years is the support shown to

both schools by the parents –

especially those who agree to

take a student or two from the

visiting school into their home

for two nights. This practice not

only makes the annual event

possible, it keeps the cost to all

involved down to an acceptable

minimum.

We would like to take this

opportunity to urge all

Cumberland families to seriously

consider whether they can assist

with the billeting of the

Wauchope students for 2 nights

at the end of Term 2.

Students who are billets will also

have the opportunity to attend

ALL events and games over the

three days as they play host to a

Wauchope student.

More information will be

available early next term. Please

take some time in the holidays to

discuss the possibility of billeting

as a family.

April 2 - World

Autism Awareness

Day

Autism Spectrum Disorder, or

ASD, is a lifelong neurological

condition that manifests during

early childhood, irrespective of

gender, race or socio-economic

status. The term Autism Spectrum

refers to a range of characteristics.

Appropriate support,

accommodation and acceptance of

this neurological variation allow

those on the Spectrum to enjoy

equal opportunity, and full and

effective participation in society.

ASD is mainly characterized by its

unique social interactions, non-

standard ways of learning, keen

interests in specific subjects,

inclination to routines, challenges

in typical communications and

particular ways of processing

sensory information.

The rate of ASD in all regions of

the world is high and the lack of

understanding has a tremendous

impact on the individuals, their

families and communities.

The stigmatisation and

discrimination associated with

neurological differences remain

substantial obstacles to diagnosis

and therapies, an issue that must

be addressed by both public

policy-makers and the

community at grass-roots level.

Throughout its history, the United

Nations has celebrated diversity

and promoted the rights and

well-being of persons with

disabilities, including children

with learning differences and

developmental disabilities, such

as ASD. In 2008, the Convention

on the Rights of Persons with

Disabilities entered into force,

reaffirming the fundamental

principle of universal human

rights for all.

Its purpose is to promote,

protect and ensure the full and

equal enjoyment of all human

rights and fundamental freedoms

by all persons with disabilities,

and to promote respect for their

inherent dignity. It is a solid tool

to foster an inclusive and caring

society for all and to ensure that

all children and adults with ASD

can lead full and meaningful

lives.

The United Nations General

Assembly unanimously declared

April 2 as World Autism

Awareness Day to highlight the

need to help improve the quality

of life of those with ASD so they

can lead full and meaningful lives

as an integral part of society.

So…show your support and

willingness to make change by

wearing Blue on April 2 for

Autism!
