The application form along with the Prospectus can be downloaded from the University website Please note that

the application form is to be submitted online only The entrance test will be online computer based only at

designated Centres across the country

APPLICATION FEES

ADMIT CARD FOR ENTRANCE TEST

1 Admit Card will be issued by the University only to those candidates who have submitted the Online Application

Form complete in all respects on or before the last date of submission The candidates will need to download their

Admit Card from the Admissions Page The Admit Card must be produced at the Entrance Test Centre along with a

photo identity of the candidate issued by a competent authority

2 Permission to appear in the entrance test is subject to the candidates fulfilling minimum eligibility requirements

prescribed for admission to the concerned programme of study and as notified in the Prospectus A candidate

may therefore appear in the entrance test only if shehe fulfills the eligibility requirements for the programme for

which the admission is sought A candidate who does not meet the minimum eligibility criteria prescribed for the

concerned programme and appears in the entrance test despite this caution shall do so at herhis own risk and

cost If at any stage it is found that the candidate does not fulfill the minimum eligibility requirements herhis

admission if granted shall stand cancelled

S S SCHOOL OF OCIAL CIENCESThe courses offered by the School of Social Sciences aim at imparting and generating knowledge on emerging issues

and problems of contemporary society economy and polity

The course structure is choice based flexible and is interdisciplinary The pedagogy and didactics are interactive and

based on field learning The academic format places great emphasis on student initiative The evaluation is

continuous and grade based The evaluation pattern is based on assignments tutorials seminars projects as well as

semester exams

At the end of the course a student would be equipped with analytical skills social science theoretical knowledge

based on empirical and field-based learning Thus a student with this kind of learning can look forward to careers in

The MA in Social Work programme would be of four semesters with 22 credits for each semester These include

theory course concurrent field work block placement and research projects as per the course structure Around 40

of the credits of the two years programme are field based

The MA in Social Work programme is designed to train students to creatively and constructively engage themselves

with social issues to evolve innovative strategies that can improve the well-being of people in general and those from

disadvantaged section of society and communities in need of ameliorative attention The broader objective of this

course emanates from the much-felt need of having a and approach to the various publicsocial work perspective

policies that are specifically framed and implemented by governments for citizens welfare

The uniqueness of this programme is its integration of social work skills and practices withembedded in social sciences

the objective of of citizens for better through innovative social action and advocacy for the inclusivechanging lives

delivery of services for well-being and empowerment to all citizens

The students graduating in the MA in Social Work would become professionally trained change agents who could

Centre for Studies in Social Management (CSSM)The Centre for Studies in Social Management at the Central University of Gujarat was established in 2010 and since

then it offers the flagship programme of the University the MA (5 Year Integrated) in Social Management From this

academic year the centre will offer a direct PhD programme in Social Management and a 2-year MA programme in

Social Management (for students who have qualified a Bachelors degree) These programmes aim to equip students

with the requisite academic and professional skills in management social work embedded in the social science

disciplines so as to enable them to become socially sensitive managers in the development sector The emphasis is on

an interdisciplinary approach which would help students to critically understand issues and concerns in policy making

Centre for Studies in Economics and Planning under the School of Social Sciences offers an integrated MPhil-PhD

programme in Economics along with an MA programme The main objective of the CSEP is to impart quality

This is a two-year full time programme offering 16 courses (both compulsory and optional) of four credits each evenly

programme the Centre is guided by the consideration that at the post graduate level students should be familiar with-

S O I SCHOOL F NTERNATIONAL TUDIES

Introduction to the School

The School of International Studies at the Central University of Gujarat has been envisaged to become a leading

institution for international relations studies in western India Encouraging diversity in the constitution of knowledge

of international affairs in India is its key concern Its current focus is on teaching and creating new and relevant

knowledge in International Politics and Security Studies the two main subfields of the discipline of International

Relations (IR) In the coming years the School intends to pursue research in history theory and sociology of modern

Indias international relations its foreign policy international thought and all areas of Security Studies Aware of the

Gujarats historical connections with the larger world it will pursue research on maritime influences on Indias trade

culture and security These relatively new areas would be pursued alongside more conventional research areas such

as International Relations theories International Organizations International Trade and Development International

Law and Globalisation Among area studies the Schools immediate area of focus is India immediate and extended

neighborhoods Programmes and the Centres of the School are interdisciplinary to the extent possible in the Indian

context All programmes of the School equally emphasize theory and policy and train students to contribute

meaningfully to the society country and the world at large

MA in Politics and International Relations

The MA in Politics and International Relations programme has been designed to encourage the study of politics and

international affairs The School seeks to leverage its unique location in the state of Gujarat to facilitate a critical

understanding of and linkages with the global forces that shape India and the world

Established in 2012 this programme trains students in the two related academic fields of Politics and International

Relations (IR) Four core courses from each field are taught and these form the foundation of academic training Some

of these courses include Theories of International Relations Global Governance International Law International

Political Economy State and Politics in India and Political Theory Students have the option of crediting courses

offered by other Schools and Centres of the University as well

This programmes strength is robust training in the all the major aspects of domestic politics and international relations

which it offers through quality teaching The programmes syllabi are regularly updated and a fine blend of classic and

contemporary academic resources is maintained The programme gets international students via its collaboration

with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Students enrolled for this programme can expect training that

would help them prepare for careers in academia public services (such as the IFS and IPS) niche journalism such as

defense security and foreign affairs entrepreneurship in new media civil services advocacy groups and non-

governmental organizations

Centre for Security Studies (CSS)Centre for Security Studies (CSS) at the School of International Studies attempts to impart a theoretical empirical and

critical understanding of the changing notions of security encompassing a complex and frequently interconnected set

of issues The integrated MPhilPhD programme offered at the Centre address key elements of both traditional and

non-traditional security issues ranging from national defence and security international security terrorism security in

the cyber age ethnic religious and ideological conflicts as well as threats to human security and the stability of states

from environmental degradation infectious diseases cross-border migration and the activities of non-state actors

With approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) the Centre is going to be upgraded into School of

National Security Studies very soon

The Centre views security as a multidisciplinary issue that should involve the widest spectrum of individuals and

benefit from the contribution of all sectors of society The Centres integrated MPhilPhD program is designed to

provide students with the knowledge and skills relevant to understanding both traditional and emerging security

The Centre for International Politics has been conceptualized to cover the IR subfield of International Politics

School of Language Literature and Culture Studies (SLLampCS) runs post-graduate and research programmes in various

subjects related to Humanities such as the study of Indian and foreign languages and comparative study of literature

and cultures Issues related to gender caste race and processes of exclusion and marginalization in society questions

related to migration and identity of diaspora communities from some of the core areas of study in the courses offered

by the School All the programmes are interdisciplinary and innovative in nature and prepare students for

employment in teaching research print and visual media administration publishing editing and emerging areas

such as technical writing and content development

The programmes offered in the School follow Choice Based Credit System Attendance in the classroom is

Centre for German Studies (CGS)

The Centre for German Studies (CGS) was started in 2011 with the objective of expanding knowledge learning and

research on German language literature and culture in India and contributing to Indias close links with Germany The

Centre offers a Bachelor as well as Master degree in German Studies Candidates who have passed 10+2 (AISSCE) are

eligible for admission to the Bachelor Program (BA Hons) in German Language and Literature After completion of

BA students have an option of either pursuing an MA in German Language and Literature or working as German

language experts Courses are designed in accordance with The Common European Framework of Reference for

Languages (CEFR) Teaching methodology adapted by the Centre for German Studies is interactive and student-

centric which gives students enough space for personal as well as intellectual growth Centre is equipped with a state-

of-the-art language laboratory which is used along with textbooks as an audio-visual and interactive aid for practicing

and listening to German native accent as well as watching informative videos on the culture society and politics of

C S D (CSD)ENTRE FOR TUDY OF IASPORAThe Centre for Study of Diaspora (CSD) was established in 2011 at the Central University of Gujarat Gandhinagar

India It offers MA in Migration and Diaspora and Integrated MPhilPhD Programme It also offers optional papers

in different Centres of the University under CBCS as adopted by the University CSD is an Independent Centre in the

University and a unique inter-disciplinary Centre in India with its multidisciplinary framework studies and researches

on various aspects and issues of migration and diaspora and their cultural literary social demographic political and

economic impact on the both and countries with reference to the Indian diaspora It is an established facthome host

that the contribution of overseas communities of Indians to Indian economy has been substantial Also the Indian

overseas community has emerged as the soft power promoting Indias international relations being its global

ambassadors and contributing immensely to the social and intellectual capital of India But what is less known is the

mourning and trauma of losing the protection of home and homeland challenges of alienation assimilation

(not to mention films) and also scholarly writings on issues related to the historical anthropological sociological

political and economic aspects of the process of migration of people Since the Centre is located in the state of

Gujarat it focuses on the various aspects of Gujarati diaspora along with Indian diaspora As the Gujarati diaspora is

one of the most successful diasporas of the India and the contribution made by it for the development as well as

CENTRE FOR APPLIED CHEMISTRYThe changing global scenario in research and economy demands a multidisciplinary approach in science with an aim

to be self-sustainable and leaders in the field It is speculated that 21 century belongs to those who subscribe to out ofst

the box approach and thinking Advanced materials are essentials to economic security and human well-being with

application in multiple industries including those aimed at addressing challenges in clean energy national security

and human welfare Accelerating the pace of discovery and deployment of advanced material system will therefore

be crucial to achieving global competitiveness in the 21 century The purpose of this Centre is to provide cross-st

fertilization of new ideas and methodology which could serve as a conduit for collaboration between experimental

research who are synthesizing characterizing and collecting real world data and computational research in model

SCHOOL OF NANO SCIENCESThe School of Nano Sciences (SNS) in the Science Campus of the Central University of Gujarat was recently upgraded

from the Centre for Nano Sciences The School offers an MPhil-PhD programme and currently has more than 30

students at various stages of their programme Besides it is also offering a direct PhD programme in Nanosciences

from this year and has been offering MSc (Nanotechnology) from July 2016 onwards MPhil-PhD students are

currently working on diverse projects covering the use of nanocomposites in environment remediation

optoelectronics nanomaterials in energy storage devices as well as for drug delivery besides computational work in

drug designing and designing nanomaterials The students of SNS have access to several sophisticated equipment like

DLS XRD XPS NMR AFM SEM FACS MALDI-TOF Confocal Microscope etc in the Central Instrumentation

Facility of the University SNS is also equipped with cell culture laboratory facilities for the in vitro screening of

compounds for biological activities in mammalian cells Students have access to more than Rs 2000 lakhs worth of

BVOC PROGRAMME ON RATIONAL

APPROACH TO DRUG DESIGN

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched a scheme on skills development based higher education as

part of collegeuniversity education leading to setting up of Bachelor of Vocation courses (BVoc) to serve multiple

needs such as (a) career oriented education and skills (b) contracted training and education programmes for local

employers (c) high-touch remedial education for secondary school graduates not ready to enroll in traditional

colleges and (d) general interest courses to the community for personal development and interest Bachelor of

Vocation will have with multiple exits such as Diploma and Advanced Diploma under the NSQF (National Skills

Qualifications Framework)

This course offer low cost and high quality education locally that encompasses both vocational skills development as

well as traditional coursework thereby providing opportunities to the learners to move directly to the employment

sector or move into the higher education sector It offers a flexible and open education system which also caters to

community-based life-long learning needs

About the programme

The program is designed to educate and create skilled manpower that can serve the society through the knowledge

gained during the course of time The student enrolling in the course will be benefitted in several ways The candidate

will work in the college as well as with the industries during the time of his study If a candidate successfully completes

first year of study he would be awarded a diploma and he will be capable enough to serve as a laboratory assistant in

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR INTEGRATED M PHIL-PHD PROGRAMME

1 Candidates for admission to the Integrated MPhil-PhD programme shall have a Masters degree or a

professional degree declared equivalent to the Masters degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory

body with at least 55 marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade B in the UGC 7-point scale (or an

equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign

educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved

recognized or authorized by an authority established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any

other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing accrediting or assuring quality and

standards of educational institutions

2 A relaxation of 5 of marks from 55 to 50 or an equivalent relaxation of grade may be allowed for those

belonging to SCSTOBC(non-creamy layer)Differently-Abled and other categories of candidates as per the

decision of the Commission from time to time or for those who had obtained their Masters degree prior to

19th September 1991 The eligibility marks of 55 (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading

system is followed) and the relaxation of 5 to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on

the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures

3 Candidates appearing in the final year of qualifying examinations may also apply However they would need

to produce relevant documents at the time of admission

4 Candidates who have cleared UGC NET CSIRJRF examinations are also required to apply online for

admission to relevant courses in the University However they are exempted from appearing for the entrance

test They would be called directly for the interview

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR MASTERS DEGREE PROGRAMME

No student shall be eligible for admission to a Masters degree programme unless heshe has successfully completed

three years of an undergraduate degree or earned prescribed number of credits for an undergraduate degree through

the examinations conducted by a universityautonomous institution or possesses such qualifications as recognized by

the concerned university as equivalent to an undergraduate degree

CANDIDATES MAY APPLY FOR MORE THAN ONE PROGRAMME IN THE ENTRANCE TEST

Candidates can apply for more than one programme (and a maximum of three) through the same application form

provided they meet the minimum eligibility criteria Before applying for multiple programmes however

candidates should ensure that there is no clash in the three examinations opted for (ie examinations opted for

should not fall in the same session)

The medium of Entrance Test as well as teaching and research at Central University of Gujarat is English except in the

language courses that are conducted by the School of Language Literature and Culture Studies

SELECTION CRITERIA FOR ADMISSIONS

1 Diploma BVoc BA MA MSc and MLISc programmes

For admissions to Diploma BA MA MSc and MLISc programmes candidates will be selected for

admission as per the merit list prepared on the basis of the online computer-based entrance test

2 Research Programmes (Integrated MPhil-PhD)

1 The University shall conduct a Computer-based Online Entrance Test with the asqualifying marks

50 (a relaxation of 5 of marks may be allowed for those belonging to the SCSTOBC (non-creamy

layer) Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per University norms Government of

India policy and instructions from UGCMHRD from time to time)

2 Admission shall be based on the performance of the qualified candidates in an interviewviva-voce to

be organised by the SchoolsCentres where the candidates shall be required to discuss their research

interestarea through a presentation before a duly constituted Selection Committee The interview

will be of 50 marks out of which 25 marks will be for Research Proposal and Presentation of the

candidate and 25 marks for Interview and Discussion

The interviewviva voce shall also consider the following aspects

i) whether the candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research

ii) the research work can be suitably undertaken at the University

iii) the proposed area of research can contribute to newadditional knowledge

Reservation Policy


Reservation of seats shall be in accordance with the provisions of the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in

Admission) Act 2006 and Circulars of Government of India issued and amended in this regard from time to time 15

of seats will be reserved for Scheduled Castes 75 for Scheduled Tribes and 27 of seats will be reserved for OBC

candidates belonging to the ldquonon-creamyrdquo layer

SUPERNUMERARY SEATS

(a) STUDENTS FROM JAMMU AND KASHMIR

Two supernumerary seats is reserved for admitting students coming from the state of Jammu amp Kashmir This

applies to all programmes of the University

(b) One supernumerary seat is reserved for NCC Cadets NSS Volunteers at the UGPG level Please note that

only one seat is reserved for NCC NSS and a candidate cannot claim botheither or

N C C CADETS (For UGPG Programmes)

Candidates claiming reservation under the NCC quota should have the following NCC Certificates for

(d) PWD CANDIDATES (For all programmes)

As per the provision of Section 39 of the PWD Act 1995 3 of seats are reserved for the Differently Abled

candidates The three categories of disability are (a) Low-vision blindness (b) hearing impairment and (c)

locomotor disability cerebral palsy This provision is applicable if the candidate suffers from any of the listed

disabilities to the extent of not less than 40 as certified by a medical authority as prescribed and explained

in the said Act

(e) WARDSDEPENDENTS OF DEFENCE PERSONNEL (For UGPG Programmes)

One supernumerary seat is reserved for the wardsdependents of Defence Personnel The candidates should

enclose a copy of the certificate issued by a competent authority in support of their claim without which their

claim will not be considered The candidates seeking admission under this category should take the entrance

examination for admission and fulfill all other requirements of admission

(f) KASHMIRI MIGRANTS ( For all Programmes)

Concessions to Kashmiri migrant students in the matter of their admission would be provided as per the

prevailing guidelines of MHRD GOI rules

Facilities at the University

Central Instrumentation Facility

Catering to the research needs in the area of chemical sciences life sciences environmental sciences and

nanosciences The CIF instruments at present provides instrumentation facilities to the research students and faculty

at the Central University of Gujarat The CIF is going to render instrumentation servicesfacilities to other Universities

and Institutes as well Workshops on operation and maintenance of advanced instruments will also be organized to

train technical stafffaculty of other InstitutesUniversities

The advanced instruments available under CIF at CUG and their application are highlighted below

Central Library

The Central Library has a wide collection of resources taking into consideration the course contents and research

needs of the university Librarys learning resource collections are developed aiming at providing the highest level of

research and teaching support to the programmes and research thrust areas Collection is reviewed every year in

order to be relevant to the emerging and developing areas of research The Library is growing in its breadth and depth

it holds about 22500 books and subscribes to over 66 print journals and magazines and over 7497+ e-journals The

Library has SOUL software and computerized library facilities

The Cyber Library provides seamless access to e-journals available at the university Its main aim is to provide access to

computers and internet to the students coming from economically weaker sections who are not able to buy

computerslaptop individually It has over 25 Pentium workstations with broadband internet access CUG has

successfully migrated towards the internet age by adding 7497+ online journals to its collection The Library also

provides access to several databases

Wi-fi and ICT Facility

The University is wi-fi enabled and students can access the internet on the basis of a personal id and password

provided by the University The University also has a Virtual Learning Resource Centre and a Multimedia Lab that

enables students to access a large variety of resources on the web that includes journals databases and books

Health Facility

Government medical facility is available adjacent to the University Campus where the students can avail of medical

help during medical hours In addition the Government Civil Hospital is located near the University The University

also has a medical consultant whose services are available to students on subsidized rates The students are also

covered under accident insurance policy of the University

Earn While You Learn Scheme

The Earn While You Learn Initiative is a unique scheme in the Central University of Gujarat for aiding deserving

students of the undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes of the University who do not receive fellowships

As a part of the initiative the students are assigned duties in the University Cyber Library after the classroom hours

Remedial Programme

The Remedial Programme is meant for the students of the University to assist them with a view to enhance their

writing and speaking skills in English as well as prepare them for competitive examinations The programme is

conducted with the support of UGC Coaching Scheme for SCSTOBCNCLMC

WSEP Programme

Writing Skills Enhancement Programme (WSEP) is a comprehensive program that focuses on enhancing the writing

abilities of the students by developing basic language skills academic writing and research paper writing techniques

through the interactive mode of workshops and crash courses The programme is organized at the University level

Placement Cell

The University has established a Placement and Training Cell which is responsible for the interface between the

University and possible recruiters The University has a fully equipped placement office and a Placement Officer The

Cell has begun placing students from the Winter Semester 2015

Games and Sports

The University is aware of the importance of physical activities and organizes annual sports events Due to the limited

space available at the present location of the University basic sports facilities are available on the campus A multi-

gym facility is available on campus

Cultural Activities

Cultural activities among the student community on the campus are promoted through various cultural clubs

Students are encouraged to participate in various cultural activities

Canteen

The University offers canteen facilities on both its campuses where snacks tea coffeedining-in are available

Transport Facility

The University has its own AC bus which is available on demand for students and the University staff The bus also

plies between hostels and campuses at designated times

The University has well-equipped facilities for conferences workshops and seminars with seating capacity ranging

from 45 to 200 persons

Non-NET Fellowships

All the students enrolled for MPhil and PhD programmes are eligible to receive a monthly fellowship through the

UGC Non-NET fellowship initiative

Welfare Schemes for SCST Minority and Girl Students

The welfare schemes notified and implemented by the Government of India and UGC are followed in the University

and the schemes announced from time to time are introduced within the University as applicable

Hostel Facilities

The University currently does not offer Hostel facilities to its students However private accommodation is available

on a shared basis in the city of Gandhinagar and students would need to make their own arrangements
