What does being a MATE mean?

It means taking allergy seriously.

If you know someone with an allergy:

Don’t tease or joke about it.

Don’t try to make them sick by giving them the food they are allergic to.

Never share your food with them.

Wash your hands after eating.

Ask them about what they are allergic to and help them avoid it.

Get help from an adult if someone with allergy feels sick, even if they don’t want you to.

Athletics Congratulations to all our representatives at the Zone Athletics Carnival last Friday. All reports have been of good sportsmanship and excellent efforts on the track and in the field. Congratulations to those students who have made it to the Western carnival – a full list will be in next week’s newsletter. Professional Learning This week we have teachers attending a John Hattie two-day intensive workshop, and a Department of Education training course on Effective Reading Practices. John Hattie is an internationally recognised education researcher, whose findings into best-practice are being utilised in classrooms to lift student achievement, and the Effective Reading course keeps teachers abreast of the latest research into reading. Sports Steering Committee Earlier this year we sought feedback from parents, staff and students on our sports programs at CVPS. With the aim of improving how we organise sporting activities, a sports steering committee made up of staff and parents has been formed which will consider the feedback and come up with a sports policy for CVPS. Watch this space for answers to commonly asked questions! Joel Wilson Relieving Deputy Principal

Game Changer Challenge Cudgee Crew, Benjamin Jeeves, Adam Travis, William Buckley, Estelle Purkiss, Tahlia Cooke, Tara Wilson, Michael West and Bronwyn da Roza travelled to Sydney last week to take part in the inaugural Game Changer Challenge. It was an intense few days. Day one we learnt many new skills and discovered what designing really means. Day two was exhausting. We worked solidly from 8:45am until 8:00pm. Twelve hours of creativity, critical thinking and designing, until we were ready. Our idea was: To design a water system that collected all run-off water and recycled water from taps, bubblers, drains. It would then be purified through charcoal pools that also doubled as wellness areas. The system would prevent wastage, distributing water to areas of need, and enable our school community to maintain a green environment during times of low rainfall. Each of us had a different role. Estelle and Tara collected the background information and narrated the story using Adobe Spark to develop a film, William designed and printed water sensors using 3D Paint that connected to the overall system using Wifi, Adam created an architectural plan using Mindcraft, Ben designed the electronic water markers with Lego’s MTA and Tahlia linked the whole system using Amazon’s ALEXIS. Mr West and Ms da Roza supported us by ensuring we met deadlines and putting the final touches on the Powerpoint. Day three was the final day, and time to present our idea to industry leaders from Amazon, Mircosoft, Telstra, Adobe, Tricky Jigsaw and the Department of Education. Cudgegong Valley was the last of the Primary schools to present their idea and amazingly we won.

Mudgee Young Readers Festival On Friday 10th August CVPS hosted sessions for the Mudgee Young Readers Festival. We were pleased to welcome our friends from St Matthew's and Gulgong Public School, who joined us in the hall for this literary event. Years 1, 2 & 3 listened to R.A.

Spratt, author of the Nanny Piggins and Peski Kids series; whilst Years 4, 5 and 6 were entertained and educated by Funny Kid author, Matt Stanton.

Girls’ Soccer The CVPS Girls’ Soccer team travelled to Parkes yesterday to play Middleton Public School. The girls played really well during this tough game but unfortunately were defeated 3-1. I would like to commend them on their fine sportsmanship in representing CVPS with pride. A big thank you to the parents who have transported the girls to our three games. Your assistance has been greatly appreciated. Mrs Bartlett
