YÜÉÅ Ytà{xÜ Wtä|wAAA Good Sunday to all! This is the year of St. Luke! Each Sunday
between now and next November the last reading will come from the third Gospel, written by the holy doctor that we know as Luke. This is a happy coincidence to meditate deeply on this Gospel because it highlights the mercy of God, the theme of this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Let me high-light some of the unique emphases of this Gospel to which the parishion-ers of St. Therese Parish should pay attention:
• Mary, the Mother of Jesus, has a prominent place in this Gos-pel. So too does other women. Elizabeth, the kinswoman of Mary. The women who give hospitality and assistance to Our Lord during His public ministry. Martha and Mary. Luke is interested in disciples beyond the Twelve.
• Only Luke’s Gospel records the magnificent parable of the Prodigal Son, which can be called the story of mercy, par ex-cellence.
• God has a preferential love for the poor, so teaches Catholic social doctrine. Luke is one of the sources for our understand-ing of this teaching. To take one example, Mary sings in her canticle: “God has cast down the mighty from their thrones,
and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good
things, and the rich he has sent away empty.”
• Finally, our present Gospel pays close attention to the Holy Spirit. Luke who is also the author of Acts of the Apostles, records the Pentecost event. It is the fire of the Holy Spirit that sends out the apostles of Jesus to the highways and the byways, teaching and preaching, healing and reconciling.
May St. Luke and his magnificent proclamation of “good news” help us to grow in our habits of mercy and love.
