THE MESSAGE OF THE VIRGIN OF LOURDES

Monday, February 11th, is the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, also referred to as World Day of the Sick. One of the better known apparitions of Our Lady took place in Lourdes, France in 1858. This shrine continues today to be one of the most popular Marian shrines in the world. Thousands of people visit this shrine every year, a special place of devotion to Our Lady, where many miracles have occurred. Beginning with her first apparition of February 11, 1858, Mary appeared 18 times to Bernadette Soubirous, a girl of only 14 years of age. When Bernadette asked the lady who she was, she received the reply, “I am the Immaculate Conception”. Less than four years before, on December 8, 1854, Pius IX had raised the teaching about the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady to be dogma of faith with these words:

By authority of Our Lord Jesus Christ, of the blessed apostles Peter and Paul, and our own authority, we declare, pronounce, and define: the doctrine which hold that the Most Blessed Virgin Mary was from the first moment of her conception, by the singular, grace and privilege of almighty God, and in view of the merits of Christ Jesus the Savior of the human race, preserved immune from all stain of original sin, is revealed by God and, therefore, firmly and constantly to be believed by all the faithful. (The Christian Faith #709).

It is under the title of the Immaculate Conception that Our Lady is especially honored in our own country. This message can be summed up in the following four points:

1. It is heavenly confirmation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception that had just been defined by the Church a few years before.

2. It is an exaltation of the virtues of Christian poverty and humility that are perceived in Bernadette.

3. The spiritual message is that of personal conversion. Our Lady tells Bernadette that the important thing is to be happy in the next life. To attain this we must accept the cross in this life.

4. Mary stresses the importance of prayer, especially the rosary. Our Lady appeared with a rosary hanging from Her right arm. Penance and humility are also part of the message, as well as a message of mercy for sinners and compassion for the sick.

Father Maximillian Kolbe and Father Patrick Peyton give testimony to the effectiveness of praying the Rosary to Our Lady. She protects and helps especially those who are consecrated to Her Immaculate Heart. She always leads us to Her Son who is truly the only One who can save us. By approaching Her in prayer, we come into contact with the Holy Spirit, who cleanses us from sin through the Sacraments that we receive with the proper disposition.

Please Pray for Our Men and Women in the Armed Forces

Almighty God, Our Father, We ask that you bless the men and women of our Armed Forces.

Give them courage, hope and strength. Grant strength and peace of mind to all the veterans who served and sacrificed for our

country. For all those suffering from the physical or spiritual wounds of war. We pray Lord that you surround them, embrace them, lift them from darkness and despair and

heal them with your Merciful Love. Be with the military families waiting for the safe return of their loved ones

sustaining them in faith, hope and love. Hear us Lord as we pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Do Whatever He Tells You

“Do whatever he tells you.” At the wedding feast in Cana, Our Blessed Mother lovingly told her son that the wine was about to finish. Jesus had not planned on revealing himself so soon, but Mary knew the shame that running out of wine would cause the bridegroom. Though she did not know how, she knew that Jesus had the power to save their friends from embarrassment. Jesus told the

servants to fill the wine vessels with water and performed his first miracle. I once saw some of these vessels dating back to first century A.D. and was struck by how heavy and burdensome they must have been when full. We all know the buzz once the miraculous wine was served--all were astonished that the bridegroom should save the best wine for last. The bridegroom did not know where the wine had come from, but the servants did. There is a certain depth in Jesus’ choice to continually reveal his greatness to the most humble of men. Fast forward to today’s gospel, Simon and his partners out to sea and hard at work, Jesus is with them, teaching from the boat. He instructs Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down your nets for a catch;” to which Simon replies, “Master, we’ve been out all night and have caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the nets.” The catch of fish is so great that the nets begin to tear, and men from other boats are called to help. The boats become so heavy that they are in danger of sinking. Now, with great humility, Simon kneels at the feet of Jesus and says, “Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” Jesus then says, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” They brought their boats to shore, left everything, and followed him. When we listen to Jesus and trust in his call to us, he will give us much more than we expect. In the case the wedding feast, Jesus did not just make wine, he made the finest wine. When he did as Jesus told him, his catch overflowed with a small fortune’s worth of fish. Yet, after reaching shore Simon left it. What kind of greatness had entered into him that he should leave everything and follow Jesus? Think of the result of the simple steps Simon took that day and how it has changed the world.

Today our 8th grade class will renew their Baptismal Promises and begin their journey toward Confirmation. In the coming weeks, they will strengthen their relationship with the Holy Spirit so that they may better understand Jesus’ calling for them. Please pray for our 8th graders, so that like the wedding servants and Simon, they will have the wisdom to hear Jesus and the courage to do whatever he tells them. Pray that through faith, a life of true joy and abundance will be theirs.
